I try to watch "Body Heat" every summer and here in the South where we live, the sultry moonlit nights are ideal for watching this timeless noir film. A huge part of the sensual danger and intrigue of the film is Mr. Barry's smooth-as-silk haunting, mysterious and tragic film score. Performances by Turner, Hurt, and Danson are perfect as well as every one else's. God, what a great film. God, what great music.
I live in the heartland but feel instantly transported to the sultry Deep South whenever I watch the film or hear this marvelous score. The music is so evocative of the characters, their situation and the steamy atmosphere. Great comment, thanks.
John Barry was a giant among film composers, with so many superb soundtracks, impossible to say which one was 'his best'. That said, the Body Heat score feels like a miracle, every time I revisit it. .
Easily the most underrated movie of all time. William Hurt gives a masterclass in acting; Micky Rourke is mesmerizing & Turner is sexy & perfect, but poison. This movie reminds its audience of the overwhelming grip & loneliness that ultimately captures & detains those who pursue all of the momentary delights of the flesh; & from within the heat, they lose all sense of morality. A slow gradual walk with the two main characters, Matty & Ned, takes you with them to the edge of the precipice, & we see how each in their own way has sacrificed their soul. In the end, from entirely different places, one lounging on a Caribbean beach, while the other stares at the ceiling from a prison cube, they look into the void, quietly reflecting on the dark forboding space that goes straight to the flames of hell. Heat, fires, sweat, explosions are all part of the story, timed to capture the destruction that is inevitably wraught by the demands of the fleah. Movie making doesn't get any better than BODY HEAT
As a practicing attorney of over 30 years, I make a point of watching "Body Heat" every 6 months or so. I've known a lot of lawyers who started out wanting to be Atticus Finch, but ended up emulating Ned Racine. Should be required during Law School, and not because of the Rule against Perpetuity! Incredible movie, and eternally haunting themes.
I agree especially if you're a criminal defense lawyer. You are going to see some stuff and a lot of things are going to offered to you, lots of options. Its a measure of your character which way you go.
Those of us who watched BODY HEAT knew it had to end this way, with vamp Matty going her carefree way. There is so much emotion in this ending piece ... it's the movement we heard since the very beginning, and throughout the film ... but it is as if in this grand final movement, MR. BARRY is telling us " I warned you ... " BRILLIANT ... !
One of the greatest films of all time and with, IMO, the greatest film music of all time. The only competitors to this music coming from John Barry's other masterpieces. Body Heat's script, cast, acting and director are all perfect. I have lost count of how many times I have seen it, you feel the heat of the film coming off the screen, you believe the young Kathleen Turner could drive almost any man to this crazy plan and Ned is doomed from the moment he meets her. Ned's friends are so well cast and acted they really do feel like might well be his friends in real life. William Hurt and Kathleen Turner have never come close to matching this beautiful work of art. Even Mickey Rourke's small performance is brilliant and those words are seldom combined in one sentence. Anyone who hasn't seen Body Heat should because I guarantee you''ll not be disappointed and you will love the twists in the story.
This ending piece puts the theme in the hands of the entire orchestra, which gives it a richness that settles us in after two hours of mystery. Simply Brilliant, Mr. Barry ...
Some of the greatest music ever written that spans decades and generations. This music travels with us through time, continuing to have a finger on the pulse of our emotions and thought. Barry's music draws us into ourselves. The power in this is unbelievable.
Yes! I bought the DVD for the music. Absolutely gorgeous and tells the whole story without words or images. John Barry was a genius. I miss him so much
The perfect combination of music and film ... Barry's work in this sultry, beautifully constructed film is top notch. I've seen this movie several times in the past 30 years and STILL feel the intensity of the HEAT ... remarkable !
The insistent nature of desire, the mystery of other people's hearts, the ache of regret--this music has it all. It just doesn't get any better than this.
elfman, ennio, badalamenti, philip glass, et al. why my favorite music is motion picture soundtracks. seriously though the chemistry between these two in that movie was something i've never seen before or again. it was gone in 'the accidental tourist'
this theme music created the movies atmosphere. This music complimented the great acting and the great directing. Ned was such a layer back guy just like this jazzy music. Music classes in all colleges should show this movie in order to help music students learn how to feel the mood of their music. Old movies got it right. Check out "Chinatown."
@@jamesmongan7967 I love Jerry Goldsmith but I'm not keen on his score for Chinatown. No way is it as beautiful or effective as this or his own score for Basic Instinct.
My wife and I worked in Hollywood Florida in the 90's and visited some of the bars and the beach where the movie was filmed. The heat and humidity made us almost feel the way Kathleen felt. And this music also makes you feel the HEAT between her and Ned.
I may love this even more than the opening theme version...this is much more lush, sinister and alluring, giving you time to allow the absolute shock and disbelief of that classic ending to sink in. The ending that was foreshadowed by the opening theme all along, if you were paying close attention. Sometimes, the bad and the beautiful DO get away with it. (NOT a spoiler for the million folks who have already seen it.)
So well said. I prefer this to the opening for just the reason you said (better than I could have said it). What's so wonderful about John Barry's film music is that while it enhances the films perfectly, it's also great stand-alone music. It's fun to remember the films when listening to his scores but you don't have to. You can just listen to them for their incredible beauty.
Body Heat in my opinion is one of John Barry's finest works. As this is being played at the end of the movie and you see "Matty" relaxing on the beach, you wonder what she is thinking. Is she truly happy now that she has attained her life's ambition, or was it all the scheming and everything she did to get to that point that she got the most fullfillment from and now that she has it all, it is a bit of a disappointment...makes you wonder. thanks so much for posting this wonderful piece...Norm
Perhaps she ends up as one of those 80's criminals who "got away with it", only to be done in by DNA and forensics 30-40 years later. Old Sparky, anyone? Even so, justice delayed is justice denied.
She's just the same she always was, right where she started. On her own, but still using everybody to get to that point, of just being alone by herself. The same she did to her husband, to the main character, and now to somebody else unsuspecting. Still needing companionship, but unable to go about it the natural way. As she sits on the beach, the cycle starts over again and repeats itself, a new prey will soon be found
Only one modern film noir example matches the brilliant dialogue, intensity of each scene, and mesmerizing cinematography of this film, as well as the captivating score. And that is zChinatown and Jerry Goldsmiths equally hypnotic soundtrack.
Saw it in theatre when I was 15. Man, I squirmed every time Kathleen Turner was on screen while the whole time I’m sitting next to my parents LOL. Fast forward about 30 years. Sitting on city bus going down Second Ave in Manhattan. Woman sitting next to me rings the bell to get off and in a husky voice says “excuse me” as she needed to squeeze by to depart. It was Kathleen Turner. I could have died right there.
Revisiting ... I just watched this outstanding film for maybe the 6-7th time, and I still say it's one of the great MOOD movies I've ever enjoyed .... the acting is effective, and the story is plausible ... mostly due to "the heat". And Mr. Barry's theme casts a spell on us that lasts two hours, at the least.
i've been a fan of this film score ....more than mere words can describe..the emotional background he provides to a film..the energy to tantalize and procure....the allure is deafening when mr. barry gives us his heart...the opening sax is magic ...john's orchestrations transport us to enchanting and yet provocative scenes...great stuff..
Kathleen was actually sipping a Mai Tai on "Lumaha'i Beach" on the island of Kauai in Hawaii... That was Not a Volcano in the background but "Mountain Peaks" that were also depicted in South Pacific and called "Bali Hai" where they showed the peaks with a foggy haze in the scene to make it mysterious looking and this shot at the end in Body Heat showed them clear...that was the same beach in the movie when they sang, Washed That Man Right Out Of Her Hair and many other tunes from that musical.
Mattie Walker winds up in a kind of hell---a cold soul who fooled everyone but who is in reality now dead whereas Ned Racine is saved by two angels the cop and the assistant D A. A brilliant noir with an equally brilliant score by the extraordinary John Barry. So sad that he has left us.
Few movie soundtrack themes are as haunting and mysterious as Body Heat, The theme is almost guaranteed to inspire a sense of foreboding and even regret, for those who have been caught in someone’s web of deceit in the past.
Thanks so much for posting this.. words escape me (and I'm a writer!).. one of the most haunting, evocative, beautifully composed and performed film scores ever written.. John Barry was truly a genius..
@4Topwood Oh I think you should take credit for seeing so deeply into the essence of this score and for being so brilliant in articulating what you see. It is quite perfect really and I thank you again. And yes John Barry is one of the greats. Magical.
With all due respect, I think this score is much better than Goldsmith's score for Chinatown. It's sexier and more haunting. But I think Goldsmith's score for Basic Instinct is as good as this. It shimmers, it's seductive and chilling and ultimately elusive, just like Catherine.
I agree with the comment about taxi driving I used to drive a taxi. It sounds like sexy city music driving past all the tall beautiful skyscrapers. And I remember myself as a young pretty girl at art school. I'd walk to the bus stop for a ride home. The bus driver started making eyes at me in his rear view mirror it was a very sexy bus ride and I'm not bragging but a few people told me that I looked like Kathleen Turner,!!Wow what memories I have❣️
Every man should be fortunate to watch this film. Watch it and learn what can happen when you allow the pussy to take control and you make decisions that will cost you dearly. It's a great tale of the supreme power of a woman's sexuality and a mans fatal weakness
@rumergodden Thanks but in all honesty, I really can't take credit for what I said. I just listened to the score and put into words what John Barry had written in musical notes. I read he considered himself as much a dramatist as a composer and you can really hear it here. An amazing artist, truly one of the greats.
