- Beatrice Berrut plays Bach/Kempff Siciliano as an encore at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
The siciliana or siciliano is a musical style or genre often included as a movement within larger pieces of music starting in the Baroque period. It is in a slow 6/8 or 12/8 time with lilting rhythms, making it somewhat resemble a slow jig or tarantella, and is usually in a minor key. It was used for arias in Baroque operas, and often appears as a movement in instrumental works. Loosely associated with Sicily, the siciliana evokes a pastoral mood, and is often characterized by dotted rhythms that can distinguish it within the broader musical genre of the pastorale.

In fact the more I progress in music the more I tend to think there is no such thing as easy.... .I like everything in this performance and even more so the rhythmical quality. Besides the beautiful voicing, I want to compliment you on the beautiful musical lines you've painted during this performance. I'm practicing a less complex version I stumbled upon at the moment, but I will for sure spend some time on the Kempff transcription in the near future. Thanks for uploading this!

Yes, the voicing with Kempff is not so obvious when just playing the notes! It requires some serious interpretation to bring out the melody we hear when it’s played on the flute or cello. Much appreciate this insightful comment.

Hi Beatrice, thanks for replying back to me, so excited to see your note 🙏 Yes I am playing the original Wilhelm Kempff version. This piece is much harder than it looks at its music sheet, required a delicate dynamics, articulation and controls specifically on left hand. I guessed I watched your version more than 200 times so far hoping to get close to your version, it becomes part of my daily piano practice now 😁
Hope one day after COVID-19 fiasco ends, you can come to Canada and play for our nation, Canada 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 is a very large country as you know, but no matter which city you come in, I guarantee you will see me sitting humbly at the first row 😁😁
Do you think the Kempf version is more difficult than others?
The simplicity or difficulty of a music piece is a subjective matter depending on player’s experience and his/her skill set to be honest, in my view Kempff’s version is the best piano arrangement of Bach Siciliano piece which originally wrote for Flute, it is not an easy piece to play in general for beginners and even early intermediate levels, it takes time to get a good grasp of melody, articulations, rhythm, right fingering..... practise is the key. Personally I recommend to practise Kempff’s version if you have the skill sets and the patience (even though there are simpler versions out there), however nothing is wrong to start with simpler versions at the beginning and then tackle Kempff’s version if you like. I hope this helped!

Il y a aussi , le second mouvement du 2 ème concerto pour clavier de Bach qui s appelle siciliano, et qui est très très très beau...

Please forgive my very layman comment as I have never gone to any music class and know nothing of anything about Baroque style in music (especially piano pieces. )
I only go by my basic instinct, ha ha， as an ordinary audience.
I see the difference now and would go into digging into the mystery you have hinted to me.
But I do enjoy your very many other performances in TH-cam, especially when you play with Camille accompanying her strings.
I am running short of words to say how well you play.... maybe like this...
no one ever plays so cooperatively and harmoniously in such a setting, as pianist , in that I can really enjoy the music , the string and the piano jointly and severally.
Sometimes I even just set my mind to filter out the string and try to listen to how you play the piano notes, though I have never touched a piano seriously in my life.
Thank so much for your contribution to the music society which brings much more varieties in our enjoyment around the world....
