    A question. I've watched a few in a row now...do you fold the cloth always in the same way...because the zig zags drawn here produce a different effect to the snowflake mandala zip zags

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this one and the snowflake yes. They are what’s called 8 point mandalas so the fold is the exact same. It’s all in the marker lines drawn on and sinew lines that create the separate designs. I hope this helps😊💖

    Hey lady I just tried this very tie and even mixed the chartreuse best I could. My black was a lil sloppy 🙏🏽 and I splashed a lil purple on my white area 😩 After 2 days when I open it could I bleach those areas? Like maybe trying 50/50?

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rhonnie! Thank you and I would definitely try to bleach those areas with a 50/50 mixture as you suggested. To be safe I would use a paint brush to apply it so you can be more precise and also don’t forget to neutralize after no more than 20 minutes with the hydrogen peroxide bath. 9 cups water to 1 cup hydrogen peroxide. Double or triple if need to depending on if you did Tapestry or not. I hope this helps my friend!😊💜

I use high quality fiber reactive dye powder from a company called Dharma Trading Company and I actually have a link to their website in the description box of my videos. I use soda ash for a dye fixative to raise the ph level of the shirts so the dye will bond with the fabric and not wash out. Hi and thank you for your question. This actually was one of my first tapestry’s on video and I didn’t realize the camera was started a few minutes late. I have since been more mindful of such mistakes. I plan to do an updated tutorial of this tapestry that is better video quality and more detailed soon. If you are following the video along then the first fold is just to fold in half. I hope this helps and thank you for your question🙂

    Hi, I love your work it's gorgeous ❤️. I have a few questions: how do you make your soda ash solution? Can I use baking soda instead of soda ash? If the tapestry is 90% cotton does it still work? And do you let it dry after soaking it in soda ash? When you fold it in half and in half again, the next fold, why isn't it regular? Why doesn't it look like a triangle? Thank you so much for your work

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thank you for your questions! Soda ash is 1cup of soda ash per gallon of water. And no you cannot use baking soda it won’t do the same thing. As long as you have 60% cotton or more you are in the clear. I do not let my items dry after soda ash, I spin them out in the washer so they are a little damp. It makes it easier to fold in my opinion. And the fold you are talking about is a typical mandala fold. So if you want to create a mandala you would fold it like I did every time. I hope this all helps ☺️❤️

      It’s no trouble at all. I use soda ash and water to soak the tapestry in for 20 minutes then I spin out in the washer so it’s damp. Then after that all I do is apply the dye mixture I described above. Then I let sit for 24 hours and rinse in cold water until the dye runs clear. Gorgeous! I’m going to share some thing that I just learned about but I haven’t tried yet for myself. It may help you or somebody else. I saw on a TH-cam hair tutorial where the person removed a hair elastic from their hair by touching a Q-tip to a little lemon oil. The thin elastic just broke immediately! I’ve ordered some lemon oil from Amazon but it hasn’t arrived yet so, like I said, I haven’t tried it for myself yet. If the shirt and dye were already dried, it seems like the little touch of lemon oil wouldn’t damage the design. I was interested in this tip for my hair because I put elastics in it and get tired of pulling out pieces of hair along with the elastic.

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the soaking, spinning, and tying when damp are all 100% correct. Soda ash is a dye fixative so it helps create the the chemical bond that allows the dye to bond with the fabric. Without it the dye would simply wash out of the material when you wash it. Majority of it anyways. And Synthrapol is a textile laundry detergent. Synthrapol helps to hold the dye color in the fabric so it doesn’t fade. I hope Ivanswered your question 😊💜💖

    Okay so how long does the dye need to sit before you wash it, and can you add heat to help the fabric absorb the dye better? Also when you wash it do you use any type of soap or is it just cold water? Sorry new to the whole time dye stuff trying to figure out the best techniques and proper tools and steps to do them! Thank you! This turned out beautiful most definitely going to be my first ever tie dye project!

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s so awesome and it’s no trouble at all. So the dye sits for 24 hours then you rinse in cold water and gradually increase to warm/hot to remove the excess dye. I wouldn’t recommend the heat because you want the dye to have time to bond with the fabric so it doesn’t just wash out or fade. Then when you wash your wash on the hot water cycle for the time with Synthrapol which is a textile detergent that helps keep the colors bright and I always let my projects hang dry after the first wash. After that wash and dry like normal. I hope this helps😊💖

    Hey! Superb work on your side. Some questions- can i use acrylic fabric colours for this, also, do i need to soak the cloth completely in colour so that it appears on down side also? Will it be forming the pattern? I fear it will become uniform and no pattern will appear. Please reply.

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much. I think if you use the acrylic fabric colors you would have to dilute it otherwise it won’t soak through the fabric because of the thickness of the material and the acrylic fabric colors themselves. Also in order for the material to soak all the way through and create the design on both sides the material would need to be soaked completely otherwise the pattern would only be one side. The procion dye mixed water is still a liquid consistency so you would need to achieve that same consistency with the fabric colors. By doing so I’m not sure if it would even stay when washed. It would be interesting to try and if it works I would love to see your results. I hope this helps somewhat😊

    I wanted a couple mandala tapestries but could not find the colors I wanted and they are so pricey. Then I thought.. Hmmm, I can make my own, there must be YT videos and landed here with my search. So simple to follow. What does that soda ash do in your list? How long do you let the die soak on your tapestry? How would your recommend washing it after dying. Beautiful outcome and thank you for sharing.

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and I’m so glad I could help. The soda ash helps to let the dye set and not rinse out when you wash it. I always recommend 12 to 24 hours to let the dye set, for a tapestry I always do 24 because of the amount of material. And for washing I use a textile detergent called Synthrapol that keeps the colors from bleeding and fading. I have a link in the description box of all my videos if you would like to learn more about this specific detergent. I hope this helps😊

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Any size would do. You just have to adjust the lines drawn according to the size you pick. Basically, don’t put anything to close together because you’ll have a really hard time folding and tying it. And don’t put everything to far apart or you’ll lose some of the design. So any size would do but a queen would probably be the safest way to go 😃 I hope this helps!

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your question! The sinew creates the white lines in the very center creating the mandala pattern so if you use rubber bands you would have to make sure they are very tight. Otherwise it would just look like one big circle in the middle. The sinew can be tied so tight that dye can’t penetrate the fabric so that’s why I use it for a lot of my projects. I hope this helped and please post your result because I would love to see it!
