  • Today is the 123rd birthday of the late, great Aaron Copland, who was known as one of the greatest American composers who ever lived. Besides orchestral concert works and ballets, he wrote music for many movies. This piece for marching band, Cinema Italiano, is an arrangement of one of three songs written for the 2009 film "Nine", which is based off of a 1982 musical of the same name. So, I feel like all of this connects in some way. The original musical was actually made during Mr. Copland's lifetime, although it was in his later years. I really enjoy this work a lot, because I listened to it for a while, and then I actually forgot about it. But it came back to me randomly while I was at work a couple years ago. And since then, I've wanted to conduct it here on TH-cam. I've conducted many works dedicated to movies, but nothing marching band-related yet. This piece actually has that classic musical style that you'd hear in older movies and other forms of media. And so, since Aaron Copland was a film composer among other things, as I said, I think this piece fits perfectly here. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Mr. Copland! :)
