I think the "Frank Miller being sexually frustrated" part, says more about the guy who made this video essay

Extremely interesting take. Another one is that the first Sin City story is a tribute to Frank Frazetta and Robert E Howard. Frank has been on the record saying that Marv is just Conan I’m a trench coat

it's not about divorce. it's about a corrupt city and dark love stories and action.

Ehhhhh, I dunno. It’s a great idea, but some of the evidence chosen was clearly not supposed to be sexual, but to make the action stand out against the harsh blacks and whites

Hmmm, I guess the base theory is doable, but some of it seemed like reaching, like the idea of the rain and blood splatter, sorry man, it just doesn’t look like it

I'm not a big fan of literary analysis either. Seems like you can go in any direction. Unless there are other sources that directly corroborate the analysis, like friends and family in Miller's life at the time that say yes he definitely put this in this comic book because he was going through this, I also find it hard to buy.

This was fascinating. I found the background info more engaging than the analysis of sin City, but it was all good. Did Frank Miller write hard boiled? That Geoff Darrow drew? I remember thinking that Geofff Darrow was so impressive at the time because of the detail that he put into his artwork. I think I also heard that Darrow was responsible for the storyboards for the original Matrix.
Year one was a great Batman comic. I don't remember that much about it except that Batman was driving around in a Porsche as his batmobile before he had a dedicated vehicle. Also I remember the scene with commissioner Gordon beating up the Green Beret, but it's possible that got reinforced because I recently saw the animated version of this.
I remember wanting to like Ronin a lot because it was Frank Miller, and I did read it a few times, but it was never as good as his other work from around that time before or after.
The Bill sankowitz drawn Elektra series was really good.

You can't use words like "clearly" in an opinion piece. Gunshoot and bloodsplatter being "seamen-like" is a HUGE reach! Maybe you made this for clicks / ad revenue. Maybe you made it because someone told you you should; but this is entirely conjecture and a huge reach.

The title should be the Frank Miller Story....gezz. Also the assertion about it being about divorce has no merit...Merv being a self insert and Goldy having the same color hair as Franks wife is not enough. Everything else was just opinion...thanks for the clickbait.

  • @TheMartyredextras

I believe you may be right about his sexual frustration and desire for independence, but I think you're reading too far into things trying to sexualize the violence. it's a similar type of frustration, but ultimately I don't believe its intended to symbolize or look like sex in any way. It's just a cathartic violence.

Cant see the divorce angle at all, and Frank Miller is not Marv as he moved after being mugged only shouting, but not beating the mugger to death lol. And plenty of female comic characters had thongs like Elektra. Most comic characters were hyper exagerated ideals, both women and men. Sex sells as much as fantasy and distraction. But the setting of sin city was only partially "super" focused as has been the standard for most comics, as the characters all over only seemed to have powers at times, though one might have ( its not marv though, so guess again). Most got through their respective tales by simply have a bit of physical prowess to begin with, including the villains in the stories ( Marv more than others as he was likely in some war, then prison and worked out, and probably had slightly denser muscle and bone). But THe ex cop and Marv were on diffamounts of medication. Marv especially was HEAVILY MEDICATED throughout his tale, which on top of his physicality, would explain a lot. And I could see how some would make parrallels to Miller as the writer probably was using cocaine in the 1980s and maybe anti depressants too. Marv was likely on stimulants, anti depressants AND ant psychotics fer sure, so on top of being thiccc, experienced and tough, wasnt fazed by nuffin'! Sin City was simply the ideal noir about conspiracy that runs a city and by extension a metaphor for the corruption that makes and runs civilization in general. Plus how a man on a mission needs to get done what needs done'ing :P. But despite all they did, everything would just keep on a rolling along. The world keeps on a turning, blind to our lives and suffering as the universe itself always has been.
