Porsche GT3 PDK vs Manual which one do we choose ?

- Porsche 992 GT3 PDK vs Manual. If you read the reviews, and watch the videos they seem to agree that a drivers car like the Porsche 992GT3 should have a manual gearbox so that a driver can engage intimately with the cars workings
and hopefully they’re right because you don’t get to test drive a new GT3 before placing your order
However the fact is that the quiet majority of GT3 buyers favour the semi automatic PDK shifter so who's right?
Well to figure out once and for all the answer to the question of Manual verses PDK, why not join me Roger Bailey for some enthusiastic driving in this manual GT3 and in this PDK GT3

If it’s truly a first world problem, the answer has to be buy both! I have a 2009 year old Porsche Cayman S with manual as a weekend car and couldn’t be happier. My daily has DCT. Use case is key and each has its place. If I could only have one car it’d probably go for the PDK. If it’s a second car then I’d get a manual every time. Excellent vid Roger. Keep up the great work.
I chose manual. But my Turbo S is PDK of course. So I can enjoy both. And I do.
Fantastic review and insight. Your videos just get better and better RB. Please keep the content coming our way, thoroughly enjoying all your videos. Many thanks
Thanks, will do!
Great video Roger. PDK is fantastic and technologically better..and so on. For me as a B road driver my cars are always manual. I would only consider PDK if I did a lot of track days, which I do not. Happy with the manual in my Spyder.
Thanks,
Yep. Manual Spyder here too. No other way to have it !
Reviews of the very highest quality Roger; every video surpasses the last. You should have far more followers Sir. Loved the subtle humour at the start! Finally, what a first world problem to have! All the best, and please keep producing content; it is amongst the best out there IMO.
Thank you Alastair really appreciated 👍🏼
Great video Roger, keep up the good work. Your assessment of the PDK versus manual option is spot on. I was lucky enough to get an allocation for a 992 GT3, but had a hard time making the decision on a Standard winged model or a Touring. I knew that I had to have the manual though, just for that little extra bit of interaction and attention required to run through the gears. So satisfying and just plain fun to have three pedals. My manual Touring does it all for me, low key with all the right sounds, and the leather wheel is so nice!
Great review Mr. B !! Thoroughly enjoyed your observations and conclutions, both great choices for hunting different road types.
Thanks Barry 🙏
Love the video Roger. I would go for PDK but both boxes are fantastic
really interesting video Roger and the ending was a surprise, thanks for keeping up with the great content
Glad you enjoyed it
i always enjoy your productions @@RogerBaileyOnCars
This is the best answer to "The" question of gear box for a GT3 that I've ever seen. Much appreciated. And, I agree.
Thanks 🙏
Great review. I also chose manual. My GT3 came Pirelli PZero Corsas and they are fantastic on the roads. Compliant with all the grip one could ask for. Same shark blue too, but not those buckets…I didn’t bond with the buckets.
Brilliant sir and with amazing Music❤
Excellent video...great presentation....well written and produced.
Glad you liked it!
I’m fortunate to own and daily drive a 2022 992 Cab. Love my manual and couldn’t imagine life without one.
Top notch job mate, well done 👍
Thanks 👍
Wow, Mr bailey that is clearly the very best video in your outstanding library…
Extremely detailed and knowledgeable ..
having driven both manual and PDK . I totally agree with your opinion … manual is just a little bit more involving…
Thanks Rob :-)
Great video and awesome advice ✊✊✊✊✊✊
Hi Roger, great video! Love your language and the music too - both engine and human :o) The car, of course isn't bad either. I'm the proud owner of a C4S in sharkblue and I really love it, although it is challenging to keep the coffee in the cup. All the best to your wife! 🍀🍀🍀
Great review
two identical cars summoned up just like that so as to make the point, you are the master of Porsche TH-cam reviews, respect.
I appreciate that!
Hi Roger,
Great video. Collected my new GT3 last month at Porsche Swindon. Fantastic car and PDK was the correct decision. Thanks.
worth the wait your videos are always full of facts while being entertaining, i'd take the car you chose too tbh
thanks
Roger, I very much enjoyed your video and humor, and your content was bang on and most helpful! What’s next??
Thanks Paul, next up possibly a GT3RS update vid
Hey Roger, just stopping by after a long break from youtube. Just catching up on old car content (I have 5,000 videos on my 'watch later' playlist, ahhh!) but noticed you haven't uploaded in a while. Hope you and yours are doing well. I noticed your subs have FINALLY increased from 12k and are now at 17k. Looks like your channel was about to get on the map, and deservedly so. All the best mate. David
Will enjoy the GT3 now
Thanks David and welcome back to TH-cam! I’m having a break due to poorly wife, best wishes, Roger
@@RogerBaileyOnCars Hi Roger, nice to hear from you, and sorry to hear that. Wish her a quick and speedy recovery. All the best
Another great video review of Porsches finest. I’m very much a PDK man and love flicking up & down the box instantaneously with the paddles.
My old GT3 was on Michelins & the new, current GT3RS is on GoodYear F1’s.
Much prefer the F1’s both road & track. Especially in the wet!!
Keep up the great production work Roger👍
Thanks Graham, my RS too is on Goodyear Eagle F1
Great video Roger! Made the right decision in the end...!
thanks nosh
Hi Roger hope you are well. I couldn’t get a manual 4RS so it has the RS PDK box.
Having driven manuals all my life , I wasn’t happy but wow I’ll never get a manual again!!!
Great video btw
Thanks for sharing your thoughts- yes PDK is fantastic GT4RS even more so !
First- love that you always match the sweater with the car in your vlogs
Next- if you were to choose between the 992 gt3 (manual or pdk) vs the 991.2 gt3 rs for “mixed” driving - aka half road half track miles- which would you prefer?
the 992 GT3
Can’t afford a GT3 yet but am debating the same for a 718 Spyder that I will get used soon, despite long gear ratios I will go for Manual, no problem to use all gears on Autobahn either ❤
Long gearing is vastly over mentioned by reviewers. Spyder/GT4 are awesome cars 🚙
Manual in a Spyder for sure…it has to be as that’s what the Spyder over the GT4 is designed for…B road destroyer …has to be manual. ..it has a manual roof 🤣
Great video Roger. And it’s not just. GT3 debate either. I own a 981 Cayman S PDK and still have a leaning towards manual if and when I change. But, the PDK is so good as an all round car, I’m really not sure.
Interesting vid! Haven't seen roads that quiet for a long time, whereabouts was that?
Great review, Roger. I chose PDK since my GT3 is mainly for track use. I felt I would be leaving performance on the table by choosing the manual in a track setting. I would love to add a 718 Boxster Spyder to be used as a weekend fun road car, though, and that would for sure be manual!
Thanks, yes for track pdk is unbeatable, as is a manual spyder on the road - Roger
I am super happy with my manual 2021 718 Boxster S.
I absolutely love my PDK -Mr Purple GT3-RS!! The PDK is. Glorious!!! Lightning shifts that are perfect every time
Great video Mr. B. I'd have watched earlier by TH-cam is currently so laggy, it makes it hard to watch anything right now.
*_Manual or Auto?_*
Well, since I got my BMW 300d coupé in 2013 with an auto box, I wouldn't buy another manual. They're great for having fun. But they are outstanding when you're just popping down to the shops or driving in the UK's heavy traffic and my left leg loves me for that 8-))...
Hope you both had a great new year. Trust and hope that Jilly's not feeling to bad. _Give her my best wishes._
Your No1 Stalker ;-))...
Hope you find a fix for laggy TH-cam, tried clearing cache? Jilly suffers with MSA a rare neurological condition, appreciate your asking and your best wishes which I’ll pass on to her, keep on stalking your still no. 1 :-)
@@RogerBaileyOnCars Really shocked and so, so sorry to hear about Jilly's condition. Having had some 50+ major operations, of which 8 have been life saving, I can fully empathize with what's going on with the both of you.
YT not as laggy now. Been sorting it out for hours. Wasn't just a cache problem. Not sure what I did, but it seems OK now!
Surprised about your choice of a manual gear box when the Porsche auto PDK is the quintessential auto you can get.
Thoughts with you both. Take care.

@@thezanzibarbarian5729 thanks TZ wishing you good health, btw I believe also YT slows down if you have ad blockers
Porsche is the only manufacturer that I recommend the PDK (auto) over the manual. Good content my man
fair point, thanks
Great video and guide Roger, looking at upgrading my 991.2 , was thinking 992 T manual or GT3 Touring PDK, you have sweet talked me into a manual whichever one I buy on the 2nd hand market Ta,
Nice plates.
Hard choice in 2024, having recently been lucky enough to drive the gt4 rs, the pdk was epic, and I loved gear shifting in manual mode. Is 500bhp to much in a manual, my mind says yes, but never been lucky enough to try it.
I plan on getting a 992 GT3 soon (either used or when my allocation comes up) and this is a big debate for me on which transmission to go with. I have a 992 T now with manual and love it, and the GT3 gets an even better 6-speed (rarer and better long term value), yet the PDK is so perfectly matched with the engine and no risk of overrevs (when buying used). Tough call, but I will most likely go manual.
I had Goodyear Eagle F1 delivered on my current 992 and have been pleasantly surprised - most want Michelin 4S but this is a very close second. Pirellis are total junk (on the standard 992 range) and Porsche should drop them immediately.
Drove a 981GTS Cayman with a manual. What a car! Best and good health to Jilly!
thanks
Ahh the continous discussion of PDK or Manual.....! Track, sure PDK is faster, especially in Auto. But a Manual in the hills is SO enjoyable!!
Each to thier own.
Mine is a CS Manual, with leather steering wheel (previous experience Alcantra is crap after a bit). And LOVE it. Oh and Manual also has no lift shift, but I haven't mastered that yet.
Interesting info on tyres, thanks.
Really enjoy your narration and uploads, Roger. Thank You. And HNY to you and Jilly (and good health).
Thanks 🙏 good health to you too
Drove Manuel's all my life. I now have a 991.2 S with 420HP and like the PDK in higher HP Porsche's.
Great video. I prefer my manual on my GTS, would love to try out a GT3! Appreciate the advice on tires. Live in the country, wouldn't track a cabriolet 4 GTS. The Michelin 4S have been highly recommended before and thank you for confirming. I need new tires in the spring.

Glad to help!
Hi Roger thanks ... for fun review a Corvette c8 love to know what you think if it
Perhaps a C8 one day
I went for a Manual, at the time, 2012, Porsche were really pushing the PDK and i spent hours test driving it, but the character/and sound of the car quickly became monotonous - shifting sounds the same on the way up, every time!, and on the way down! every time - i went for the manual, which is a direct mechanical connection with the Car rather than the fake paddle switches on the steering wheel to a computer, and I'm glad i did !!!
Heart manual , head pdk , it’s simply better than me. P Zeros and the touring. Thanks for the demo👍🏻
No problem 👍:-)
I’ve always been a manual guy, but once I got my 992 S in PDK, I’m sold. I feel like you’d be leaving engineering and performance on the table by getting a manual when PDK is availabe. Just my .02.
Incredible cars. PDK has my vote.
Had both. Both are epic. Manual would be the best box ever if they didnt have the upshift blip feature. I can row fast enough where i dont need a double blip on upshifts. I guess tradeoff for a light flywheel and free revving car but it digitizes the “pure” experience
This can be turned off
it wont double blip on upshift if you utilize the no lift shift by staying on the throttle.
@@ap-op1wy correct but after a couple no lifts youre going 130+ with one hand on the wheel. Not that theres anything wrong with that 😂
Manual is great, manual in gt3 is unique, no manufacturer offers manual on a sub 7 min Nurburgring cars. Love manual in my spyder and my gt3 but GT3RS comes with PDK only for a reason. Excellent video!!!
Good point!
excellent video - how did you manage to get two identical Porsches with almost identical number plates?
two cars? well, basically I owned the PDK car for a year or so and then traded it in and then I owned the manual car for about a year - simples
@@RogerBaileyOnCars
Thats crazy 😊
I see it this way, as a track car: PDK. If it's going to be your week end back road driver: Manual.
PORSCHE. Kicking ass with tiny flat sixes for over 60 yrs! Beeindrukend.
i'll take the PDK on car like this, well made video interesting
thanks
i bought the manual and have already done over 25 trackdays on mine. Some times I wish I got the PDK, but cant really complain by having the 992 GT3 in my garage. You can't go wrong with either transmission. Realistically its not like I will be racing this car on a grid, its only for casual fun trackdays to improve my own driving and times.
What I noticed is that most of the manual ones are with touring package or configured without clubsport package and some even worse with the comfort seats… in my country only one gt3 is to sale with the clubsport package and it is the most expensive by far…
oh my! what a shocking conclusion.
Awesome ! HNY Sir.
Happy new year!
My 981 S is absolutely sublime with PDK and Sports Chrono. 💪🏼
Nice Roger, but surely the answer is that the GT3 RS is better than both a manual GT3 and a PDK GT3, as that’s what you’ve done!
fair comment !
Better on a track but on a road ?? Rather a gt3 pdk but I’am biased
Hi Rodger
Are these in Rivera blue.
The ultimate RS Porsche colour from the 70’s
These are shark blue, very similar to Rivera
Problem is the gearing. Only the 911 S/T got the somewhat road usable gearing due to final drive ratio. Manual is great, PDK is great.
Just sold my 2005 996 GT3 Cup track car with old style H Pattern 6 speed and bought a 2012 997.2 Cup which has dog box sequential shifting and is upgraded to paddle shifting .
Why ? I am serious about tracking and want both hands on the steering wheel continually and want the increased focus this insures
I am old now and do not need any distractions such as worrying about downshifting from 5th to 2nd ( instead of 4th) which can be a $20,000 mistake
Also love the PDK in my 2022 Turbo S Lightweight which I also track with both hands on the wheel
I respect my manual shifting brethren on public roads at spirited driving speeds but at race pace on a track two hands on the wheel helps me to drive quite relaxed and with increased focus
PDK is for daily drivers or people who track, manual for people who treat this as a weekend car for fun.
Pdk for drag and track. If you’re a drag guy get a turbo S. Track definitely a pdk. For the street like myself, manual for the pure driving feel
No right or wrong, personal choice on gearchange. I prefer engagement of a manual over speed of a pdk
I just traded my 992 turbo S for a manual 992 gt3 touring and i never drove a manual before. But im learning now 😂. I hope if I'm lucky enough to get the 992.2 gt3 touring in a manual and the 992.2 gt3 rs and then I'll have the best of both.
The whole point of the manual - when you know the PDK is faster and more consistent - is that it give you the driver, a challenge: It provides one more thing to get wrong, and thus is so much more satisfying to get right!
I have auto-blip on my Cayman, it can be disabled by dialling back the Stability Management in Sport/Sport+, or by leaving the car in it's normal drive mode.
Lets be honest, even the GT3s that get to see a track will usually be on 'track days' rather than racing, so "extracting the last couple of tenths" is largely irrelevant except for personal pride.
Please address the question of wing vs no wing. GT3 vs Touring
Wing pins down the car on fast sections of track, apart from this it’s an ornament
PDK, of course; the manual box is charming, but its day is done...
Manual for me Rog, as there's never enough race tracks nearby when you want one.
Fair point ! Thanks John 😊
If your chasing tenths of seconds round a track regular , and if you have knee problems get the PDK , otherwise buy the manual , more involving and becoming a rarer option .
having a pdk, I cannot imagine wanting anything else.
Heart Manual, Head PDK, Wallet says Rev Range Report😢
Rowed gears for 22 years when I lived in London, I would never choose a manual over PDK. PDK is the way to go.
It depends on the use, and how many cars one owns. I agree, that in the city center an automatic (incl PDK) is more convenient.
But, when I ordered my GT3 I knew it needed to be manual. And I love it!
@@PetriTemiseva I had a 992.1 PDK for 3 years and barely drove it at all. I think going manual will reignite some driving enthusiasm... I've have/had four "autos" since my last manual, and IMO they all have something missing...
@@beedoox5613 True. They just feel different.
Manual. Not manaul.
I’d pick the manual. I’ve driven manuals all my life. Took my drivers test in a “three on the tree” Dodge truck in 1981. My current Jeep Gladiator Rubicon is a manual. Manuals allow for much more control, especially in winter, though if I owned a 911 or Cayman I wouldn’t be driving it in snow or ice.
They wouldn't call me as a ftb....they can foxtrot Oscar!:)
Pirelli with PDK although I love a manual.
fair choices
I would get neither, because I can't afford either.
PDK. Cup 2’s. That’s all 😊
PDK for me, always.
I get where your coming from Matt
I choose manual, so my family doesn’t ask to borrow my car and living in California, car theft happens more often then not and most people don’t know how to drive a manual and betting on they wouldn’t be able to steal my car.
My friends manual got stolen in California. They just put it in neutral and tow it.
Here’s the issue with manual transmission and I’ve had the 996 Manthey edition GT3. I’ve had the 997.1 GT3 both manuals. These motors are low torque. So you had better make sure you’re in the right gear at all times. I wasn’t paying attention out on a desert byway, and a M3 came up, I was in third or 4th gear. He took off and I stood on the pedal and NOTHING happened. BECAUSE I was doing 35 mph and I got torched by the time I figured out what happened. A simple wrong gear or misshift and you’re toast.
The manual is a slower car. WHY would you spend all that money THEN buy the slower version??!! Makes ABSOLUTELY no sense. If you want more driver involvement buy a 911T. You’re buying a race car for the street. A track car. Plus the new manual have auto blip and rev matching so it’s doing most of the “involvement “ anyway.
I’ve had 3 GT3s now and IF you’re going to drive it the way it was intended the PDK is the only answer for this car. I’ve had 8 911s including a 993TT and all but 2 were manuals .
I’ve driven them all on the track. I get enough involvement picking the lines making sure I’m at the correct the correct braking points and going by my mates. Why would I enjoy watching people going by me? If you want to WASTE that much on a great 911. Then buy a 964 and have at it. I’ll wave as I go by you and your involvement! lol!!
If you buy a Cup car they aren’t going to put a manual in it, it’ll come with a synchronous tranny. If you want a manual you should get your “involvement” in an air cooled car.
Then you can argue why didn’t you want the oil/leather aromatic sensory effects of the involvement of a classic?
Manual has no place in a GT3. But hey if you love compromise buy the touring wannabe GT3.
The manual makes the whole purchase and process a waste of money because 90% won’t get anywhere close to 6/10s of the capability. Save the slot for a track rat and get the GTS or a 911T you’ll get just as much involvement
Thanks for sharing this, good points well made
Yeah, manuals ftw!!
Probably the best analysis weighing up the relative merits of PDK vs manual that I’ve seen - another excellent video Roger. One of my all-time favourite videos on the subject is Henry Catchpole’s beautiful piece, “Manuals matter”.
th-cam.com/video/oaUCdAdaaj8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fFetjuwXPtncg86g
Conclusion: rationality can take you so far but ultimately it’s an emotional decision if you’re not looking to race. (I went for a manual on my 981).
thanks Stephen, yes catchpole does a good review
Manual with Rev matching is not a true manual. I would prefer an older Porsche with manual but the newer models harmonizing better with PDK.
Street? Regular manual all day.
Street with occasional track use? Regular manual.
Track only? Ok maybe the DCT/PDK.
My 2¢
Edit: yup, manual it is, but alas, no GT3 at all, I'll take the GT3T, manual, Exclusive Manufaktur interior, Sepia Brown over Cohiba, or, ready for this?......GT Silver over Riviera Blue leather, yup, Silver over Blue, silver wheels, and I'll have the PCCB's calipers painted in Rivera Blue, with of course, Dundon's cat-less headers, their valved system leading into their Inconel Mini-Crack Pipe exhaust..... I just need an allotment and someone to lend me that money without the expectation of getting paid back anytime soon if at all 😅🤣👌
Manual for me
PDK everyday…… I wouldn’t have a manual again.
I pick the Spyder RS :) You getting one, Roger?
i've no plans at the moment for a spyder RS but never say never
@@RogerBaileyOnCars Would you give up your manual spyder for it? I can’t afford both, and am struggling with that decision right now!
@@hbullock for mixed driving and no track use I’d keep the manual Spyder, although .. I’m basing that on my time with a GT4RS I haven’t driven an rs spyder

Just sat in my Cayenne browsing the classifieds for a manual sportscar to sit alongside my GT4RS. Looking at a 2006 V8 Vantage 6spd. Any input on one of those? 43000km on the clock.
I had Vantage V8 once, manual is preferable over the auto shifter, enjoyable car but the sills used to fill up with water !
I had a manual 4S for several years. A match made in heaven that suited my driving pleasures. I didn't think anything could be better until I moved up to a PDK GTS. But it did get better!! With the flick of the shifter stick I can still get manual if I want it. So I now have the best of both within the one car. Manual alone is so last century!
Are PS4's approved for use by Porsche
yes the N rated ones are approved
Emanuel
I had pdk cayman for 4 yrars now I am bored looking for manual. Manual all day.
Manual, it more fun and a theft deterrent. Also keeps valets from moving my car.
MANUAL
To each their own opinion. For me it's manual all the way
If you think an automatic (call it what you want to make yourself feel better) is more fun than a manual, I have to respectfully question your ability to drive a manual well. Maybe you're the type who takes the car out of gear as you approach a stop sign, or you don't understand that rev matching is needed for both up and down changes and that's why even your up shifts are jerky, or you can't heel toe and do it consistently. In that case, an automatic is for you because it takes all the skill and _challenge_ out of driving.
I want to be challenged. And automatics just make driving too easy because all you're really doing when it comes down to it is steering.
You get the manual and quickly realise the fun wears off from how unpractical it is on the road; you want to run through 1st->2nd-3rd at full noise but it's quite a silly experience with the speed you reach and you just end up feeling like a moron.
So then you take it track where you meet other motoring enthusiasts including other GT3 owners and then notice the conversation of the day becomes all about lap time. You observe the other drivers and it becomes clear that you would be faster in PDK and start to better understand the car's purpose; which is on a track going fast.
If you want manual, buy a GR86 or Miata. Then you will get your 'driving experience' pleasure. The GT3 Is not the car for Sunday cruises shifting through gears; the ratios are just way too high and the car too capable for street driving pleasure.
Regards, owner of a GT3 and GR86 manual - and now on the market for 4RS with PDK.
somewhat agree depending on the roads but less is more my 07 997.1 RS regeared shorter R&P is more engaging than my 18 GT3 Touring
I completely agree. You’re basically giving up engineering and performance when going with a manual on this vehicle. I’m super happy with my PDK
I got the Touring in manual with soft spring conversion kit it will probably never see track time. If getting RS, PDK is only option. So to have the manual is unique in that regard. If I had normal GT3 with PDK id always be wanting the RS.
@@mayhem88”normal GT3 would wanted the RS” is exactly how Porsche designed them ; )
Get both. Problem solved. 😂
Did you intentionally wear that shirt so that the police will think you aren't wearing your seatbelt? :)
Not intentional but now you mention it I might do so more often 😊
