    Josh I bought a GoPro Hero 12 on the strength of this video and it’s great. I’m currently using the 9 version so it was well worth the upgrade. The first thing I noticed was the battery improvement, filming at 4k 24fps I managed 1 hour 52 minutes before the battery died, that is extremely good. Also as you mentioned, the larger individual file sizes making sorting the clips out much easier. Many thanks for the video, interesting as always. All the best, Steve. 👍

    I just got the screen protection stuff for mine so I'll be testing it out this weekend. I have a 9 as the b-cam and the 10 on my helmet right now, but I'll be putting the 12 on the helmet and 10 as the b-cam now. Everyone goes down a notch and I'll be selling the 9. By now it is pretty slow the footage isn't quite as good as the 10 even.
    I pretty much agree with everything you said. One extra thing is my 10 will shut down due to a low battery as high as 21%, it's really ruined a few adventures I've taken. I've started just changing out the battery for a freshie on snack breaks no matter where it's at - which is fine because I've bought a bunch of spares. Getting the camera off the helmet mount and getting to the battery is a pain in the ass though, I wish the media mod had it's own mount instead of using the ones on the bottom of the GoPro.
    I was interested in the HDR mode with the 12, but it seems it severely limits the pro-tune options. When I put it at 8:7, I can only use 4K and ev comp and the iso settings are set to auto. I think that will work fine for instagram clips, but is pretty limiting for YT. When using 10-bit log, you can only record in 4k/5.3k with ev set to auto and max iso of 400 - again not a big deal, but a bit of an odd choice. I would have like to see 2.7K 30 since that hasn't been available since the 8 I think - I don't know why some of the lower resolutions are disabled, there must be a reason.

    I was also looking for the 2.7K options in the GoPro12. But indeed, it's verry "basic". Although they've massively decreased bittrates on 1080p, which makes the files much smaller. I did some tests when I still had the 11. And file sizes and bittrates were like actually exactly the same when recording 15min. on 1080p30 and 2.7K30 and quite big. So there was totally no advantage anymore of filming in 1080p.
    Another thing of the Hero12, they advertise with lot of cool features. But all of those are worthless if you just want to record in 1080p. 1080p Does not have much of interesting options and most of them are reserved for 4K and 5.3K.
    About that GPS unit, they probably just have removed that to reduce production costs as an inflation correction (DJI had throwed the price up). They claim it's about battery life. But it would not make much difference when disabled. Looks the real thing they've did to improve battery life and reduce overheating, is reducing bittrates on certain resolutions. I've made some tests with both the 11 and the 12 and the differences are verry big. Which is good for file size however, especially on 1080p. Which was quite high...
    But a lower bittrate means less processing. And less processing means less battery usage and less heat generation. But they probably could achieve the same results on both the 10 and 11, since it's somewhat the same hardware (the 11 is exactly the same if I'm correct). So the 12 is just like an software updated 11. They just put a 12 on it and sprayed a few blue speckles over it and took the case and the GPS away. I'm sure the 11 could have the same performances when getting the same adjustments in firmware, and the 10 probably too. But a software upgrade does not increase cashflow...
    I'm actually thinking about returning my Hero 12 and go downgrading to the 10. It's a difference of €150 and I probably could use that money better for the a potential new Insta360 X3 next year.
    Both DJI and GoPro just did some minor upgrades this year.

    • @MVDBR
      @MVDBR  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not sure where ya getting the bitrate info from, my 1080p on the GP10 with HEVC and high bitrate enabled was 60Mbps, the 12 is the same 🤷‍♂️ thanks for the comment though mate cheers

    • @rockels_journals
      @rockels_journals 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MVDBR I did a comparison test with both the Hero11 and Hero12.
      Had put them both on the same settings and let them record for exactly 15min on the second exactly. In the same lightning conditions and recording the same blank wall. So that image processing would be identical on both of them.
      After I've taken the SD-cards out and compared all the files and put the values in a chart.
      The results showed a drastic decrease in bittrates (and file size) on the Hero12. And that was also on those resolutions they claim to have improved on battery life and "thermal shutdown" (overheating). There's an official chart out from GoPro, where they claim something that 1080p30 has something like twice the runtime compared to the 11 (I don't have the exact numbers now, since I'm not near my PC).
      However the recording comparison showed a drastic drop in both bittrate and file size on that resolution.
      Can't remember the exact the bittrate and file size of the created and compared files now. But it was something like 5 to 10 times smaller on the 12 then it was on the 11. File size on the 11 was around 3GB, where the file size on the 12 was in MB.
      The difference was this big on those resolution and I didn't believed the difference in GB and MB, so i performed the test again. Giving me approximately the same values the second time
      Where values on other resolutions were almost identical in both bittrate as file size.
      They've just decreased bittrate on certain resolutions to decrease processing. And less processing is less energy so longer batterylife and less heat generation.
      I'm sure they could have done the same on the 11, making the same firmware adjustments. But this would not generate the same cashflow as with a "new/updated" camera.
      The 11 and 12 basically have the same hardware.
      But I could give you the exact numbers tomorrow if you wish.

    Good little vid. I think the difference between the 2 cameras is negligible. I actually thought the 10 looked better for almost all of it.
    I think the 12 has more sharpening and the colours are brighter (Both in a bad way). If you adjusted your processing of the 12 (in your edit), they would probably look identical.
    I think if you use the 12, you need to drop the sharpening 1 and change your colour settings in your editing LUT. You looked beet red on the 12. I tried several profiles on my Sony TV and the 12 looked over-saturated on all of them - also the 12 was wayyyyyy too contrasty, meaning any improvement in dynamic range was lost. To put that in perspective - on my TV, two of my settings have the overall colour desaturated, the reds turned almost to minimum, and the brightness and shadows lifted (so it might look worse, for most people, who tend to use standard settings on their TVs and devices).
    Anyway, great vid Josh. I'm still waiting on a bloomin mike for my Sony X3000, which is annoying. I'm probably going to buy the DJI Action 4 sometime next year and use the Sony as an 'off bike' vlogging cam.

    • @MVDBR
      @MVDBR  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the detailed input Cam 🤙 Yeah the colours looked a bit over cooked, I guess I should have just had the cameras on auto settings for the test footage. The satch and contrast could definitely be dialled down a bit for the 12, unfortunately tho there are only 3 settings for sharpness and the low looks a bit pox and when I sharpen it in post it doesn't come out real good, not sure why. Above my pay grade probably 😬 Don't ya hate waiting for stuff! I can relate 😭😭 Cheers mate

    • @actstuntcam
      @actstuntcam 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cheers Josh, hope that came off as constructive. Sure you'll get it all dialed in with practice. Query - When you were using your X3000 in 1080 - did you do this because it looked best in 1080? Or were you avoiding the hassle of editing in 4K? I think the 4K looks slightly better than its 1080, which is excellent, but I watched a video where a guy said fast-moving stuff looks better in 1080 and the Sony just doesn't process fast enough for the 4K. THOUGHTS? - Cheers, Cam:)@@MVDBR

    • @MVDBR

      @@actstuntcamyeah all good mate appreciate it. If I recall correctly the Sony didn't do 60 (or 50) fps in 4k? That would have been the main reason, along with the hassle of editing and also extra SD card space required. Just did a vid in 4k 60fps as it suggests with the lens upgrade, ill edit it later on this week see how it goes. apart from new screen layout does not seem to different so far. It is said to have twice the recording time per battery. however I'm not sure about that, testing so far indicates only marginally better. That being said 4k 60fps would use more power. ill keep testing. Running external power bank has caused me nothing but trouble on the 10, corrupted files, camera freeze. I am running a battery in the camera at the same time not sure if this has made a difference to your setup or not. I normally record and edit in 4k 30fps. You do need a beefy pc and GPU to run it,
