Anyone “protogen dni” or “it’s always a protogen” probably get mad when people are anti fur The insane amount of hypocrisy with some mfs and they don’t even comprehend how stupid they are
That’s kind of the funny thing with the (and most) communities. You associate with those of similar mindsets, curate the rest as the other, and vilify those others. Seeing it firsthand reminds me of Parties that insist on group cohesion and will commit purges. These are people speaking against or challenging the party line or seeming like a threat to someone in the old guard. It feels slightly ironic too since most groups I join champion the idea that they wont oppress or discriminate anyone before doing just that overtime.
I don’t think anyone should be judged by their fursona species, that’s like judging people by their other interests like drawing, writing, etc. just bc people write weird fanfic doesn’t mean every fanfic writer is weird, yk?
Ye i get that a lot. (me having a partialy fox fursona). People assume stuff that, when it comes to me at least, doesnt really apply. When i confront them about it and try to explain them that their assumptions arent quiet right, they try to play it off as a joke. When i dont act the way they thought i would though, then they get surprised/mad. Its weird really... The furry community itself is very accepting and welcoming, but ironicaly, you get heavily judged based on your fursona species.

Totally agree. Actively being a good person often requires boring, difficult things like taking a deep breath and walking away or saying "Respectfully, no" and removing one's self from the situation, whereas *looking* like a good person means performing an action *where others can perceive it*, and it requires that the people observing it interpret it positively. That's placing a lot of expectations on others to witness (an have expected opinions on) the virtue signaling, on top of the signaling itself. Kinda wild to think about.
Protogens are cool and amazing species. It is those whom focuses on the weird and strange are the ones who are highlighting the species in a negative light.
I mean it's pretty subjective too, I think you'd have a hard time finding a species that _doesn't_ have some weird things associated with them At the end of the day we're furries, there is no "normal" from us in the eyes of normies so I don't really see the point in caring much anyways
Yeah, it’s very much cherry-picking which in turn spread to the observers in the form of the availability heuristic; things appearing more common than they actually are.
Yeah I think it's a mix of popularity and that causing confirmation bias in casual observers. I'm a fox (or close enough to generalize as such) and I've seen a lot of jokes about foxes being bottoms, which idc when it's just a joke, but it's not ok the like... Once or twice people have made targeted comments at me, like guys, I choose my fursona species when i was around 15, please chill. The nail that sticks out gets hammered though, it's always been the case that a few bad actors can make an entire community look bad for being the loudest voices while the quiet ones who prefer to sit on the sidelines aren't like them and get the same treatment by association, even when that association is sometimes built upon a false narrative. I don't judge people for their fursona species, we get enough flack from outside of the community as a whole that we really don't need anymore harmful generalizations or infighting between species, judge people as individuals rather because that takes power away from bad actors trying to put down an entire group when ya treat them as individuals and take away their ability to influence ya on the group in question as a whole. I rarely say anything about even being a furry because of social anxiety and I joined the community years ago because of some very nice community members that helped me a bit with my social anxiety online but at the same time I've also met the occasional problematic person, but all communities will have their bad eggs, especially larger ones, because they're made up of free willed individuals with different views, standards and preferences and it's really difficult to truly judge any community as a whole or generalize them because of that Random note on the fox thing because idk, maybe one of y'all will get a chuckle outta this, if I wasn't ace questioning I'd definitely be a switch so hey, you're only right 50% of the time! /lh
I hereby dub this phenomenon the furry species cycle: 1. A furry species is introduced, and becomes somewhat popular. 2. Teenagers and young adults, looking for the next cool thing, make fursonas of this species. 3. Trolls, antifurs, and yes even some predators use this species to bully & prey on the younger (i.e. more naive) furries. 4. Some furries fall for this bait, some antifurs post about the species in the worst possible light. This happened to sergals, sparkledogs, etc.
I think this is an important reminder tbh. Idk if it's not race or sexuality, people will always find a way to Other folks for other things. And here we are. *eye roll*
this is when we can differentiate who thinks like humans or not, humans are full of prejudice and "attack first, talk later". yeah you could be saying im ebing specist to humans, but i have to live in a human society and be constantly frustrated with how selfish and uncaring they are.
its hella ironic given the discourse was about a "sexual" mod when the furry community as a whole has always been labeled as degenerate freaky types from the outsiders and in truth ALOT of porn comes from furries and furry artists so its really odd to see them complaining about degeneracy
@@metgames8703 it's a widespread thing in all modern fandoms, tbh. i think its mainly an issue of younger folks with no experience in fandom spaces coming in and trying to apply their undeveloped morals to an incredibly wide and diverse group of people.
if it was shrek, peter, spongebob, or hell even the default model twerking, not a single person would be upset. but suddenly it's a protogen that makes it bad i guess -_- the more this kinda thing happens the more i think humans just suck or smthn
yes you are right about the thing you said at the end, i mean this as someone who study behaviorism as a hobby and know that humans and other primates have horrible natures
I think it's because of the influx of minor furs joining the fandom but also more people's eyes are on the community so people I guess are trying to cover up the more nsfw side to make people think the fandom isnt weird when...the whole point of furry is being weird and being yourself, as well as the beginning of the fandom being primarily adults so of course there's going to be more nsfw stuff. I hate this purity stuff because no matter what we do, not everyone is going to understand or want to understand furry and we should just be ourselves
There's been an influx of puritan zoomers that like making drama and telling others how to run things, especially on social media Disagree with them and they'll either throw every buzzword at you that they can or just emojis if you're lucky

I saw that proto lethal company video and immidietely thought "oh its just adults being adults" and moved on. Isnt this just what people do? I never thought this was just a protogen thing, or a furry thing. We're adults having fun with characters and mods in a game. And since we're adults, wont that mean our jokes are gunna be.. ya know.. ADULT? the discord account beta's mentioning is a bad actor but the lethal video itself is just people having fun. People confuse me.
I have never met a bad one directly. The only bad ones I've heard of were that strang group of people who try so hard to suck up to the Protogen Creator by reporting every single "illegal protogen" they come across, which is honestly more-so hilarious than annoying or sad.
I've been a furry for... Damn, over twenty years now, and I've learned that you can never judge a furry by their species. I've met sweet protegens, horrible wolves, sassy mice, dominant rabbits, submissive dragons... That's what I love about the community, there's a ton of diversity and as long as you don't cause problems, whatever species you feel fits you best shouldn't be ridiculed. I've introduced a few friends to furry culture and while some of them are sort of wary of it, others have embraced it wholeheartedly. Heck, I have a friend who made her first furry character a dominant Sith Lord bunny. It's great to see that sort of creativity.
@@henrybear2293 not really specism since they dont identify with other species usually (be therians) im quite specist towards humans due to pretty crappy natural behaviors (such as the one in the video, which is this primitive tribalism where they have to make up a villain to get more united and outcast who did nothing wrong... this happens even before humans lost their fur... primates acts like that)
Oh, you sweet summer child.... I'm guessing you joined the fandom after, say... 2005ish? And weren't around for the 2016-2019 stuff? Where they were writing letters/campaigns to US Senators, with the goal of getting the entire fandom made criminal, and worse, requiring SPred registration/declaration for where we lived, just for being furries? For having the entire fandom banned from ALL public events? Things have gotten SO MUCH better since then, and it's not NEARLY the dark times we've survived. I'm a grayfur at this point and by a long shot, and... I've seen some things that would make you almost give up hope. We're stronger than ever now, and far, FAR more accepted by the general public. The fact that little drama things like this are the worst we deal with now... This is nothing. We can get through this with grace. We aren't being declared "kdiddlers" on national TV just for wearing a fursuit anymore. Sure, it's not perfect, but I absolutely wouldn't consider THESE the dark times. Not when I think about what we've already endured... We're practically on the cusp of a golden age at this point. Don't focus on the negative stuff. Look at how far we've come, and how much acceptance we've gained from the public. How charity drives are advertised on the news as positive, rather than a threat. How Zootopia is referred to as "a gateway", rather than "some sick, degenerative thing by S-ual deviants" Stuff like that. These are the GOOD times. Edit: oops, Autocorrect got me again. Fixed it.
People are just babies. That's all I can say. People freaking out over bullcrap. Discrimination on protogens all the sudden because of bad apples. As if they ate the problem when we have the same kind of people all over the fandom not just protogens. And that whole lethal company vid is literally just the lethal company community in a whole. It's a joke. And people don't seem to understand it.
I honestly never knew that this drama existed, I’m not too deep in the furry community (only really know about MFF gas attack) but this is disgusting, shaming all protogens because of a few individuals is just disgraceful.
Hi, I was the gold proto that said “as a protogen representative we don’t claim him”, and I just wanna say I meant that comment almost entirely as a joke, I couldn’t care less how people mod their games or how they play their games, I seriously did not mean to further something harmful to people and I am genuinely sorry for what I said. I genuinely think that the species stereotypes are stupid as all hell and it just makes people think worse of how they express themselves and it’s honestly an elitist problem in some cases
Hey, it's ok man no one is perfect. And I do agree that stereotypes are not good when they are taken seriously. Stereotypes more often than not are incorrect or are jokes (at least from what I have seen) while only some are made because the thing it's associated with happens to have individuals that follow said stereotype. But even then it's not ok to take it seriously and assume everyone is said stereotype.
don't just throw away your oc because some terminally-online twitter users are twits. write/draw for yourself and for the people who matter. random people online don't/shouldn't matter when it comes to the harmless things that bring you joy
I mean, this is really just a "people live in cities" type of deal. Protogens are a popular species, so of course the amount of them that are going to do stupid things is going to be higher than, say, Servals (as in the leggy cats with the big ears), simply because there are more Protogens around.
Yknow, the funny thing about that controversial video is that none of the people in it have a protogen sona. I'm the red and black one in the back, we only were protos cause it was the one furry character mod; also it pulled colours from your steam pfp to make the proto which we thought was cool. We were making that joke before and after we were protos. I honestly found the drama hilarious and really didn't care since it's not my job to appease the masses. Either way, this is my spam email account, so have fun and remember to chill out, being chronically online aint good for your health ;P
@ the sad thing is that this is my first fursona, it’s scary to see that people might hate me just because of sona. I’m very new to the community ( 5 months)
A lot of furries, or well people in general, have internalize hate towards themselves and often project that onto other people, so sadly here we are I, personally, think that protogens are cute and people need therapy
People will always be people, and I hate people for it, do not take it the wrong way there is some genuinly good kind people, but majority in 2024... I have no faith in humanity
It's an old science fiction and fantasy trope called 'fantastic racism' (fantastic meaning fantasy not meaning great.) It's been a thing as long as I can remember within the fandom. Examples: Foxes and otters are s***** bottoms. G-sheps and big cats are tops. Dragons were typically bad actors since a lot of popufur dragons were known for both narcissistic behavior, drama, or worse. Protogens (when they were invented) used to just be associated with either people into sci-fi/cyberpunk (the genre not the game) or people good with computers or electronics. (The latter is probably the only stereotype I have ever believed since protogens with suits do a lot of their repairs themselves)
I am not a furry and have no idea how I ended up here, so hearing all this stuff out of context and seeing the top comment talking about furry racism is definitely an interesting experience.
Protogens is for me one of the most open species. On the french side, protogens are really appreciated by furries and non-furries. I hope this will make a difference ^^"
as a fox (therian) this made me feel how people say that white humans have privileges and darker skinned (like from brown to black) are mistreated....... why cant humans just stop discriminating?
@@jktech2117because people love to make scapegoats for either attention, to draw attention away from their own bad acts, or for power. For example, there’s a wide history of politicians putting the blame on a group of people, which then gives them an “excuse” to implement policies which then allow them to amass more power. Bad economy? Blame the people who legally got a visa, but claim they used boats! I’d list other examples but I can’t think of any good ones in the right wording. But it’s part of how an Austrian painter started a world war. They blamed a scapegoat for national issues, riled people up, then got the excuse to implement policies to help them gain power. Or in other words, Star Wars Prequel. As long as human greed exists, so will discrimination. As long as people have a massive ego and love to glamour in the limelight, they will do ANYTHING to get attention, be it good or bad. As long as people are talking about them. And some people just want to watch the world burn. I almost forgot to account for people with mental conditions who literally can’t feel empathy or whatever, which is obviously a massive problem, as they have less inhibitions to immoral or illegal acts.

I'm waiting for the day people turn on bunny fursonas like this, because it'll be funny like "this thing murdered my entire family" and I'll just be here like 🐇
It's what I learned and tried to tell people when I was majorly apart of the Brony community, AND IT SEEMS TO BE REPEATING WITH THE FURRIES... "You can't judge an entire community by ONE person; and you can't judge ONE person by an entire community"
The whole reason I changed my sona was stereotypes. My previous main fursona was a Vaporeon with the ability to control water, if you've been in certain circles you'll know how that went.
one thing you glossed over is the chance that, that mod was probably the first "furry" mod released for the game. and some users probably weren't protogens at all. Rather just someone that was excited to finally have a furry mod for the game.
I’ve been in the fandom since the late 1980’s back when pre cons were just bbq and movie meet ups. I remember the first dust up controversy of what’s furry was an argument that mythical characters weren’t considered furry. And i thought it was just drama to make drama. Same here I’ve known great folks out there with a protegen character and others that are just jerks. Get to talk and know folks unfortunately you can’t prevent people who are going to be jerks cast some bad light just have to ignore it and be the better person.
Paused right after 1:50 and that pic made me smile a bit. A furry who says "I hate furries" is probably a telltale sign that said furry has seen some shit during their time in the fandom and on the internet lol. I should know, because I'm a part time furry and man I've seen some messed up stuff over the years. So much drama whenever I'm no looking. So much... Seriously, it's got similar vibes as someone saying "God I hate men" or a white person saying they hate white people. Just, life and internet experience in general can make anyone jaded like that.
This is proof that even if we didn't have actual racism, humans would find a way to be bigots based on something else. It's stupid but we have an ingrained need for tribalism.
There's two prominent types of people with protogen fursonas: -Actual long-term furries who are fairly often in the tech scene -Furry "tourists", roblox kiddies and newbies that have a very narrow idea of what the fandom is about and just use protogens as the easy default choice to get started It's usually the latter that makes headlines. It's like when Japan deals with ignorant American tourists. It's not always the case but it happens often enough that it creates a pattern that people will get wary of. That in return makes their own peers turn on them and isolate them in hopes to not get associated with them, lest they might become part of the collateral damage. It's just very disheartening for the first category who had no control over that trend. The fact that so many people are so quick to resort to sweeping generalizations doesn't help as it creates allergic reactions on all sides. That in return then fuels the narratives of bad faith dramatubers and essayists that will try to present and twist it in the worst ways possible to bait for clicks and engagement.
I'm not a furry, but I really like the protogen design, one time I drew an oc that looked like a protogen but at that time, I DIDNT EVEN KNOW WHAT A PROTOGEN WAS ;-;
Well this is good to know I didn’t even know this stuff was happened and I have a protogen fursona (although my main fursona is a deer) this was quite a useful video to watch and worth staying up at 1:00 am for me to get this info. Thanks for making this video
Proot over here, didn't know there were like hot tea about us o.o just sitting here doing proot stuff in a computer case. Also there are a lot of us. During furality this year at the proot meet, there were about 1500 people in 30+ instances. But wow this is all new for me. Yeah we use proot lingo. Also I'm almost 40. I ran into protogens in VRChat back in 2020 and fell in love like I must have one! So my proot Nebula was born! Now all this make me concerned of those who have protogens who's doing nothing to harm anyone, they're gonna get bullied... what if they're kids? or people who are insecure as it is. Thought the fandom was supposed to be open and welcoming of anyone who's not a blahhead. As a mom who's daughter also is a furry and wants to create a protogen, will she be met with hate? just concerning. Ruining a whole group over some bad eggs.
Surprised a video on this tone and topic was done on protogens before sergals. Specially since many sergals have beem facing with similar bad faith grouping and stereotypes for a long time
Tbh, Im chill with furries. At first i thought they were a little strange, but as someone whos been friends with multiple for years, I can tell you this much... They're some of the most chill and relatable people I know.
im not far in yet, but "its always protogens" maybe thats because protogens are popular. so a lot of people use protogen avatars. which includes unsavory pedo types. protogens are a cool ass design.. theres a lot of them for a reason. regardless, it doesnt actually matter what kind of furry the characters were. they couldve been run-of-the-mill foxes and youd have people saying "its always the furries" or something similar.
Back when I was getting more into the fandom it was the Angel Dragons that had the bad rap back then and before that it was sparkle dogs, I think It just has to do with the most popular species at the time so way more people become that species. AKA Bigger basket, more bad eggs 🤷♂️ and WAAAY more kids.
You hate Protogens because you think having a protogen sona makes behave badly. I hate Protogens because I think closed species are dumb and Protogens were made specifically as the budget version of another species, with Protogens being "open" simply because people just ignored the closed species thing. We are not the same.
Wait the beginning- ppl rlly got mad at that? Bro Warriors Fandub played Lethal Company and did the same thing- should we be cancelling One-Eye and Jayfeather now? Bffr-
Why is it always the "nice" or "progressive" groups/communities that somehow seem to show the very things they say they're against like hatred for groups or certain phobias or all that It's like how a lot of LGBT people are just Transphobic for some reason like they're kinda also in the same boat as us..?? 😭😭I hope you get my point here though, it's just kinda ironic a lot of the policies our communities are fighting against just work themselves back into them
This was truly a unintentional way to end the year just having fun with friends and figured I would post 10 seconds of us messing around. Honestly just feels like it’s a bunch of people who care more about looking like a good person than being a good person
Mmm virtue signalling or whatnot
That is exactly what it is, and ironically it ends up making them look like even worse off a person in the process.
I mean it's pretty subjective too, I think you'd have a hard time finding a species that _doesn't_ have some weird things associated with them
At the end of the day we're furries, there is no "normal" from us in the eyes of normies so I don't really see the point in caring much anyways
Yeah, it’s very much cherry-picking which in turn spread to the observers in the form of the availability heuristic; things appearing more common than they actually are.
@@clockwork3494 real, ik I get weird shit for having a house cat as a fursona
I love compliments!
I rarely say anything about even being a furry because of social anxiety and I joined the community years ago because of some very nice community members that helped me a bit with my social anxiety online but at the same time I've also met the occasional problematic person, but all communities will have their bad eggs, especially larger ones, because they're made up of free willed individuals with different views, standards and preferences and it's really difficult to truly judge any community as a whole or generalize them because of that
Random note on the fox thing because idk, maybe one of y'all will get a chuckle outta this, if I wasn't ace questioning I'd definitely be a switch so hey, you're only right 50% of the time! /lh
I hereby dub this phenomenon the furry species cycle:
What’s a sparkledog?

you’d think with the furry community being generally accepting with a lot of things this kind of thing wouldn’t be the case but here we are
Unfortunately it's not 100% accepting, Heck there's a big portion of the community that hates having new people in it.
its hella ironic given the discourse was about a "sexual" mod when the furry community as a whole has always been labeled as degenerate freaky types from the outsiders and in truth ALOT of porn comes from furries and furry artists so its really odd to see them complaining about degeneracy

I don’t understand how the dancing mod was so bad lol. Why is the furry fandom afraid of sex now
maybe, puritan bs has been running rampant recently 😔
I think it's because of the influx of minor furs joining the fandom but also more people's eyes are on the community so people I guess are trying to cover up the more nsfw side to make people think the fandom isnt weird when...the whole point of furry is being weird and being yourself, as well as the beginning of the fandom being primarily adults so of course there's going to be more nsfw stuff. I hate this purity stuff because no matter what we do, not everyone is going to understand or want to understand furry and we should just be ourselves

This, too, shall pass. Let the storm blow over.
If you get bullied for having a fictional character then they're the ones who need to touch grass.
Stereotypes will always try to ruin things. There is a reason there is the saying dont judge a book by its cover.

These indeed are dark times
Agreed
I'm gonna make a proot for meself because of this
Oh, you sweet summer child....

Hey, it's ok man no one is perfect. And I do agree that stereotypes are not good when they are taken seriously. But even then it's not ok to take it seriously and assume everyone is said stereotype.

Those who want attention.
And those who want “attention”.
Well it’s Twitter, hate is okay as long as it’s not directed towards the person making the comments
I mean, this is really just a "people live in cities" type of deal. Protogens are a popular species, so of course the amount of them that are going to do stupid things is going to be higher than, say, Servals (as in the leggy cats with the big ears), simply because there are more Protogens around.

A lot of furries, or well people in general, have internalize hate towards themselves and often project that onto other people, so sadly here we are
I, personally, think that protogens are cute and people need therapy
@ that’s true, it’s just has made it difficult to interact with non-proot furries
People will always be people, and I hate people for it, do not take it the wrong way there is some genuinly good kind people, but majority in 2024... I have no faith in humanity
We've reinvented racism
racism 2
It's an old science fiction and fantasy trope called 'fantastic racism' (fantastic meaning fantasy not meaning great.) It's been a thing as long as I can remember within the fandom. Examples: Foxes and otters are s***** bottoms. G-sheps and big cats are tops. Dragons were typically bad actors since a lot of popufur dragons were known for both narcissistic behavior, drama, or worse. Protogens (when they were invented) used to just be associated with either people into sci-fi/cyberpunk (the genre not the game) or people good with computers or electronics. (The latter is probably the only stereotype I have ever believed since protogens with suits do a lot of their repairs themselves)

why cant humans just stop discriminating?

Okay as a non-furry this just makes me sad.
This is proof that even if we didn't have actual racism, humans would find a way to be bigots based on something else. It's stupid but we have an ingrained need for tribalism.
Protogens are cool and creative creators.
0:39 they probably got burnt toast that morning

There's two prominent types of people with protogen fursonas:
-Actual long-term furries who are fairly often in the tech scene
-Furry "tourists", roblox kiddies and newbies that have a very narrow idea of what the fandom is about and just use protogens as the easy default choice to get started
It's usually the latter that makes headlines.
