I'm an artist, also 43, and a mom😱 (I know I'm not the norm for the fandom). I grew up in the 80's, and use to role play as animals (so many anthropomorphic cartoons at the time). I have more of an innocent/nostalgic fascination about your community. I enjoy seeing the creative process that goes into the characters, and suit building. I know there is more to it than that with the culturally diverse nature of the fandom. However, I would love to attend a convention if there are any nearby, not as an intruder, but someone who appreciates art, and basking in creative energy in a fun environment. So sorry that there are people who go just to gawk. Mama bear hugs to you all.

You'd be surprised about how many anti social people / furries go to mff every year. The arcade room is usally helpful to be social even for anti social people to have a good conversation about the games with random people.
I know this probably won’t help, but furries are usually very happy to welcome people into their community. It’s really nice and refreshing to see someone who is just genuinely interested. I do understand that social anxiety often doesn’t follow logic, but it might help to just keep it in your head that they’re probably happy to see a non-furry (?) there.

It’s pretty harmless I suppose, but it ultimately comes from a place of mockery, if you ask me. People still see furries as some big joke, which is irritating, because a great deal of people find comfort in the furry fandom. I don’t think they deserve to be made fun of and be made the butt of the joke all the time for that. Like, just leave us alone. (And also, people treat being a furry like a sexuality, where you are one whether you accept it or deny it, which isn’t true. Furry is a hobby and a fandom, and if someone says they’re not apart of it, they aren’t apart of it. So joking about someone being a furry and how when they say they’re not they’re just “in denial” is pretty stupid anyways.)
It sucks constantly being labelled as sexual by normies. With my friends since high school, I just kinda gave up saying it wasn't because they'd constantly point out other furries who were super sexual. I don't even think it's bad to look at NSFW or anything, but it gets to point where you can't defend yourself and your HOBBY anymore and you just go "yeah, sure, whatever you say." Furries are one of the coolest communities to look at for character design, and it's a shame that's often thrown away in favor of "oh it's just a fetish and they're lying if they don't admit it lol"

They arrived 0 problems through both the cruise luggage and 2 connect flights. But maybe don't buy anything larger than a small knife lol.

It's one of his earlier ones where he was trying the whole man on the streets trolling thing but ended up getting to high and just interviewing and not being mean and came out of the convention liking furries and telling people they shouldn't mess with them. I honestly think that was the turning point where instead of wanting to be a troll interviewer he started actually interviewing and taking things serious when he was doing a interview mini doc style video. Yeah he still has troll videos but when it comes to communities and stuff he actually talks and listens and tries to get to know the people. He also did some great stuff at the Gathering of the Juggalos.
Respect for MrCrunches, a good review, he did only get half of the convention in it’s entirety but it appears that he was only there for a day. Very refreshing

Interstate also gives me a bigger sense of anonymity. Sucks about how expensive even travelling there will be though. Plane or ship are the only options.
There's an antifur meme that I keep seeing around that has the title "Going to the furry convention with the homies" and shows an image of a military squad. I turned it around and said "It's for self-defence against antifurs"
Not gonna lie, I've had more than a few ideas for concealed defensive/offensive features to put in a fursuit. Never implemented any of them, it's just my engineering-oriented and ADHD affected brain doing it's normal thing. When I see a problem that can be solved, my brain goes "Hey, that's a problem I can solve!" and somewhere between 5 seconds and 5 hours later it spits the complete solution into my thought processes unprompted. Causes me plenty of problems by breaking my focus when I least expect it, but it helps me when I'm doing my day job fixing cars. Top on the list (and most easily implemented) is just replacing at least one layer in the suit with enough Kevlar to stop pistol bullets. That one would be allowed into cons no problem, cause nobody's gonna blink an eye at a suit that looks normal but happens to be slightly bulletproof. Less plausible ideas I've had (that probably wouldn't get thru con security) include a Taser, pepper spray, or ink marking capsule projector built into the arm of a fursuit (taser's easiest, pepper spray would require training for use, ink marking capsule projector is basically a one-shot paintball gun but instead of paint it's filled with the same kind of ink inside those anti-shoplifting tags). Beyond that, it gets into "borderline sci-fi" type tech, with fursuits that have integrated powered actuators and an exoskeleton so that you can do heavy lifting without expending much effort, or add a modular accessory of something like hydraulic extraction tools (aka the "jaws of life") that runs off the power source the suit uses. Or you know, weapons, but that's not my primary concern. Main idea of the exoskeleton fursuit is a "rapid response trauma victim stabilization and evacuation" type of exoskeleton (obviously worn by an EMT or military medic), they'd be dedicated to getting injured people out of harms way, rather than directly confronting whatever thing or person is injuring people in the first place. The only reason they'd have the fursuit elements in the first place is because that would make them less obtrusive to more normal convention attendees. And speaking of "power source", that's the biggest problem with all the powered exoskeletons currently getting R&D attention and funding. They don't have a power source that's potent enough for long enough. Batteries don't last long enough and are heavy, engines are loud (and hot/heavy), As far as weapons go, well my morals prevent me from killing people. But that doesn't mean I can't explore non-lethal options. IMO the ideal non-lethal projectile launcher is a gauss gun of some sort (gauss guns use a series of coils to accelerate an iron projectile down the length of the barrel). The reason they're ideal is that they can adjust how hard they launch the projectile by just changing what voltage you charge the capacitors to, and adjusting the timing of the coils getting energized. And so you don't run into the same problem that exists with 12 gauge beanbag rounds where they have a minimum range and even then can still break bones, instead you can design an advanced optical rangefinder/ballistics computer and have that tell the power conditioning electronics of the gauss gun how fast to shoot the projectile to both deliver a stunning/disorienting blow to the target while not doing much more damage than raising a significant bruise or maybe a mild concussion if you unfortunately hit the head. The big problem is again, the power source, but also it's probably gonna be quite heavy because of the iron that will need to surround the coils to better couple the magnetic fields into the projectile. IRL I do want to make a gauss cannon, but the power targets are... different. I want it to be able to put a hole in the sheet metal fender of a typical car, with a much narrower projectile than what you'd use for non-lethal purposes. The required kinetic energy might be lower or higher, I haven't done the math yet. And the thing's almost certainly gonna be so heavy that nobody will be able to lift it without help.

There is a social stigma about it. My parents don’t know I’m one cause I’m afraid to tell them. A large group of my friends online on PlayStation network are furries, 5 of them to be specific. They are the only ones that know I’m a furry. I don’t fursuit and the only furry stuff I do is furry stories, but it again comes back to this whole social stigma. Many hide being a furry by deflecting their involvement in the community. Once you really do research into what the fandom is, the truth comes out that we are 95-98 percent friendly, fun, and amazing people to be around, who like anthropomorphic artwork in many forms. There are sadly many people that don’t want to understand what we are about, or don’t care to.

There's an antifur meme that I keep seeing around that has the title "Going to the furry convention with the homies" and shows an image of a military squad. I turned it around and said "It's for self-defence against antifurs"
Not gonna lie, I've had more than a few ideas for concealed defensive/offensive features to put in a fursuit.
Never implemented any of them, it's just my engineering-oriented and ADHD affected brain doing it's normal thing.
When I see a problem that can be solved, my brain goes "Hey, that's a problem I can solve!" and somewhere between 5 seconds and 5 hours later it spits the complete solution into my thought processes unprompted.
Causes me plenty of problems by breaking my focus when I least expect it, but it helps me when I'm doing my day job fixing cars.
Top on the list (and most easily implemented) is just replacing at least one layer in the suit with enough Kevlar to stop pistol bullets.
That one would be allowed into cons no problem, cause nobody's gonna blink an eye at a suit that looks normal but happens to be slightly bulletproof.
Less plausible ideas I've had (that probably wouldn't get thru con security) include a Taser, pepper spray, or ink marking capsule projector built into the arm of a fursuit (taser's easiest, pepper spray would require training for use, ink marking capsule projector is basically a one-shot paintball gun but instead of paint it's filled with the same kind of ink inside those anti-shoplifting tags).
Beyond that, it gets into "borderline sci-fi" type tech, with fursuits that have integrated powered actuators and an exoskeleton so that you can do heavy lifting without expending much effort, or add a modular accessory of something like hydraulic extraction tools (aka the "jaws of life") that runs off the power source the suit uses.
Or you know, weapons, but that's not my primary concern.
Main idea of the exoskeleton fursuit is a "rapid response trauma victim stabilization and evacuation" type of exoskeleton (obviously worn by an EMT or military medic), they'd be dedicated to getting injured people out of harms way, rather than directly confronting whatever thing or person is injuring people in the first place. The only reason they'd have the fursuit elements in the first place is because that would make them less obtrusive to more normal convention attendees.
And speaking of "power source", that's the biggest problem with all the powered exoskeletons currently getting R&D attention and funding. They don't have a power source that's potent enough for long enough. Batteries don't last long enough and are heavy, engines are loud (and hot/heavy),
As far as weapons go, well my morals prevent me from killing people. But that doesn't mean I can't explore non-lethal options.
IMO the ideal non-lethal projectile launcher is a gauss gun of some sort (gauss guns use a series of coils to accelerate an iron projectile down the length of the barrel).
The reason they're ideal is that they can adjust how hard they launch the projectile by just changing what voltage you charge the capacitors to, and adjusting the timing of the coils getting energized. And so you don't run into the same problem that exists with 12 gauge beanbag rounds where they have a minimum range and even then can still break bones, instead you can design an advanced optical rangefinder/ballistics computer and have that tell the power conditioning electronics of the gauss gun how fast to shoot the projectile to both deliver a stunning/disorienting blow to the target while not doing much more damage than raising a significant bruise or maybe a mild concussion if you unfortunately hit the head.
The big problem is again, the power source, but also it's probably gonna be quite heavy because of the iron that will need to surround the coils to better couple the magnetic fields into the projectile.
IRL I do want to make a gauss cannon, but the power targets are... different. I want it to be able to put a hole in the sheet metal fender of a typical car, with a much narrower projectile than what you'd use for non-lethal purposes. The required kinetic energy might be lower or higher, I haven't done the math yet.
And the thing's almost certainly gonna be so heavy that nobody will be able to lift it without help.

There is a social stigma about it. My parents don’t know I’m one cause I’m afraid to tell them.
A large group of my friends online on PlayStation network are furries, 5 of them to be specific. They are the only ones that know I’m a furry.
I don’t fursuit and the only furry stuff I do is furry stories, but it again comes back to this whole social stigma.
Many hide being a furry by deflecting their involvement in the community. Once you really do research into what the fandom is, the truth comes out that we are 95-98 percent friendly, fun, and amazing people to be around, who like anthropomorphic artwork in many forms.
There are sadly many people that don’t want to understand what we are about, or don’t care to.
I'm a gamer because I love battlesuits,anime fans and furries look too "civilian" to my liking.
Coming from a local, you gotta remember Rosemont is a suburb and not Chicago. It's been annexed as part of Chicago because of the airport, but it's technically a suburb that's kind of sort of Chicago.

You should check out more videos from izzzyzzz (she made the 20000 dollar art commission video) she has made some other videos about different types of fan bases and furries and of controversies ( for example she made one about a brony dating website and rainfurrest 2015)
