I remember ads for semi-auto conversions of these for $25, along with $10 Mosins and $40 FALs (among many other incredible things). How I kick myself for not buying everything up by the carload back then. Never get too complacent that the common/cheap stuff now will always remain common or cheap. Or legal...

I bought my Yugo M59/66 SKS for $95 only about 20 years ago. Now, examples, in the same condition, are selling for $400 - $500. The price increased THAT much in just 20 years, which is nothing, so, you should definitely pay attention to what he has to say!

There's something about cold war SMG's that are so fascinating to me because of how cheap they look yet they're so reliable and do the exact job they're meant to do, guns of WW2 would be made of mostly wood, modern guns today are mostly made of plastic/polymer, but Cold War? All metal baby!

I remember seeing these in the hands of the Birmingham, AL police SWAT team in the 1980s. I thought they were Uzis but a more knowledgeable friend educated me on the fact that they were Steyrs. Trussville, AL (Gun South Inc import mark) is close to Birmingham. I always wondered if this had something to do with why Birmingham had these guns.

The other thing the safety notches on the bolt prevent are runaways. Many firearms are (inadvertently) designed such that if the wrong part breaks or (in blowback sub guns like this) if you have the right weak ammo it will go full auto when you don't intend it to and may keep going even if you let off the trigger. That second notch seems placed just right to make runaways impossible.

    • @Tunkkis

Short stroking is what this specific case of runaway is called.

Such a little thing to improve the MPi69 so much.
Now, I realize it's a tiny thing, but you'd think manufacturers would design collapsing stock guns so at least the "collapsed" notch has a bevel on the forward edge so a user could grab a gun collapsed for storage and rip the stock open to a usable length without needing to stop and switch *both* hands to push the "unlock" latch with one hand while you pull the stock with the other. (Yes, the M4 also requires you to push a button while expanding the stock... but the button is *on the stock* under your fingers, so you can keep the firing hand on the grip.)

who's gonna use the middle position anyway, just slam it all the way and use the progressive trigger if you need single shots. It would be kinda frustrating though if all of a sudden you were ambushed and needed to get the gun going right away and you accidentally put it on single shot when you thought you had went to full auto, i could see that being a problem in the head of battle. I would have just left out the single shot position entirely if there's already a progressive trigger

By the way, the stock is by far the worst part of the uzi, beside other "flaws". Anyway the Steyr may use identical mechanics but the gun design and ergonimics (by far the most important part for the shooting), are way better on this Austrian Uzi. At least in my opinion.

The issue with "bolt bounce" is not so much that when it falls on the back it can shoot unintentionally. The problem is more likey when you want to charge the gun, you pull back but right before you reach the seer, you slip and let go stripping a round and shoot. There is a video of Ian playing with a submachinegun where exactly this happens (without a round obviously). Ian pulls back, it slips and bolt slams forward. If there is a round it the mag, it might shoot.
you charge a gun way more often then your gun falls really heavily on its backside.

I'm at 5:35, im going to go ahead and assume that was a bad idea about the sling mount since it appears this doesn't have a ratcheting charging handle/"short shuck" prevention mechanism thus if you didn't cock it fully it would chamber a round and fire it, unless I'm shown to be stupid later in the vid the uzi seems to be a superior design, kinda funny since I'm sure they thought they were "improving" the design
Edit: I was proven wrong, okay Austrians you win this round lol

For the pronunciation of Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG:
*- Steyr:* Like "Wire" but with a hard ST at the beginning
*- Daimler:* Like "die" adding the rest of the name
*- Puch:* Ian said it more like "push". I can't think of a good one here. Do you know Achmet the dead terrorist where he says "It's aCHmed not aKnet". That how you say CH. You almost sound like an angry cat.
*- AG:* _Aktien Gesellschaft_ word by word Stock Society (GB: public limited company, US: stock corporation)

@@daqpanda No, it rhymes with the german word though ("Buch"). Well, sort of. The "u" in Puch is short, the one in "Buch" is longer. Yes, they're written completely the same and there is absolutely no indicator for the different pronunciation. Isn't language fun?
Again, there really is no equivalent to the german -ch sound in english outside of certain regional dialects.

Ian, a litle remark on the markings. AG does not mean Austria or Östenreich as it is writen in German. AG means Aktien Gesellschaft, this loosly translates as a collection of resources and/or people. It is used in the same way as the English LTD. The Puch in Steyr-Puch is not pronounced as push, i don't know how to explain it better. I am not a native Enlish speaker or even a native German speaker. I live in between, in the Netherlands. I do like your vids.

You are very much mistaken about Saudi Arabia not being a large market for small arms. Between internal Shi’a unrest, terrorist attacks, instability in Yemen, and border disputes with Qatar, Oman, and Yemen it is a heavily armed country, with three separate major security forces-MODA (ministry of defense and aviation), SANG (Saudi Arabian National Guard) and ministry of interior.

Steyr nailed it with the subsequent SPP/TMP platform. They fell short however by not innovating a collapse/folding stock which led to its downfall. B&T picked up the slack on those shortcomings. I own one of 1000 SPP's the US imported and I love it. With all that said I do prefer the sling braced design over a stock/brace, but that's just me 🍵

By moving mass to the forward part of the bolt, the entire package could be more compact. I wonder if just 2cm on the rear portion of the bolt would be safe and sufficient.

He mentions Argentina having some of these but I remember seeing in a book an Argentinian submachine gun and the design was again like another Uzi clone used by the Argentinians. Incidentally I remember an episode of In Search Of back in the days when terrorism was a world wide problem and it was about Carlos the Jackal "The Most Wanted Man in the World." In that episode the actor playing Carlos was carrying the MPi-69, the version with the sling attached to the charging handle. Allegedly Carlos carried the Beretta Model 12 submachine gun, but that's another matter.
