    Tomba was a game my parents bonded over. Tomba then became a game they bonded over with me. Soon I will be able to bond over Tomba with my Fiancé and our little one coming soon.

      @snoweysponge3299 Wow who could have guessed that Tomba would bridge so many generations! What nice memories you and all your family has and your expanding family will have as well!! What was it about Tomba in particular? the bright colors? interesting world and art? or something else? because that platforming gets pretty difficult in spots! I'm not sure I could have finished as a kid, but I loved exploring the first area!

    great video! i think you really did a great job on the style and structure this time and it was very entertaining to watch. the only critique i have is that you can probably bring the background music up a bit. far from a big deal since hearing you is the priority of course, but just thought i'd mentioned it. keep it up, you're just getting better!

      @backlogbusters  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @fourthstrongest Thank you!! That's so good to hear! I was hoping this would make things more interesting for both people new to these games and those with nostalgia too!
      Also thank you for the note on Background Music! My settings were erased and I'm trying to recreate them but I'll make sure to tweak it more next time!
      Did you ever play any of the Tomba! games? So far I've spoken to no one who has haha

    I have never played this game, and maybe my memory of PS1 games (like crash) is amiss, but this looks wildly ahead of it's time! I remember seeing this in BlockBuster (RIP) but I was never a PS1 owner.... The cutscenes and 3d looking side scrolling bits look real fun though! One day, maybe I'll take a "bite" out of Tomba!

    • @backlogbusters
      @backlogbusters  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @clemShady72 Haha Let me know if you change careers and need a writing job, those puns could be just what I’m missing! You know I guess Crash does work like a 2.5D platformer in a lot of places and I didn’t make that connection! But yeah i’m glad Tomba being ahead of its time came across, it felt very fresh and fun! (when I wan’t hoarding lives to my detriment haha) Also the search continues for someone who played this game back in the day because it’s still been a mix of ‘heard of’ or ‘saw on shelves’ and I’m still so interested in the lucky few who played this at the time!

    The word you are looking for is metroidvania. Tomba like quackshot is one of the great overlooked metroidvanias

    • @backlogbusters
      @backlogbusters  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @samdavies2069 haha yeah that's probably the quicker description.. I just sometimes can't tell if people find the 'metroidvania' term overused or if it always paints a picture of missile doors and wouldn't due Tomba! justice? Great game no matter my sub par title though! and I'm definitely adding Quackshot to my backlog, first time I'm hearing about it so thanks for the recommendation!
      Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching!

    I also have nostalgia for collections of game demos,
    but I only got this for PCs around 2000.
    There was a magazine (in my country, Brazil) that included 2 discs, 1 complete game and one with around 50 demos.
    It was really fun to explore the demos, it's like falling onto a dining table full of different options, cookies, bread, cakes, juices, etc.
    you experienced different worlds.
    most of the ISOs of these Demos CDs can be found on ArchiveOrg, one day I'm going to download some because there's a 3rd person war game that had a fog/snow stage that I liked and I don't know the name to this day, it would just be a matter to dig through these Demos CDs to find out.
    There are a lot of games from that era that I intend to beat one day: MDK, Myth The Fallen Lords, Total Annihilation.

    • @backlogbusters
      @backlogbusters  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @rrodrigocabral Good to hear I’m not the only one that remembers them fondly! Also what magazine came with a whole complete game and 50?! Demos??
      I remember picking up some ‘PC Gamer’ magazine that had a demo disk with ‘Crimsonland’ which I spent hours playing!
      I like your metaphor of the dining table! Even if it is a bit messy sounding haha! But yes it was always such a fun surprise to checkout so many games through one single disk!
      I’m also wanting to dig through the old demo disks and find those games that are lost to my memory, let me know if you find the name of the 3rd person war game you mention!
      Also from your PC selection I’ve not played any of those, but I’ve heard MDK brought up quite a bit as well as Total Annihilation, but I never hear anyone talk about the Myth series, other than when it’s brought up as a Bungie fun fact! It does make me want to go back and play through Bungie’s old catalogue to see what all of those are like!
      All this demo discussion does make me want to make a more lengthy video just on demo disks or livestream playing through some of them as I’ve got a huge stack of Xbox ones sitting around!

      @@backlogbusters I was betrayed by my memory, seeing better... there weren't 50 but 20 demos. and it was from a magazine linked to PC Gamer I think, it has the name "PC Gamer Brasil" printed on the CDs (despite the name of the magazine being "CD Expert").
      - "Myth Fallen Lords" was a fun RTS to play, it had a dark atmosphere, it was one of the complete games that came in this magazine, I never revisited it after that time, so I suspect the graphics wouldn't be as good as I remember, I never finished it because I got stuck in a difficult stage where I had 3 hordes to deal with and I could only concentrate on 1.
      - "Total Anihilation" is a Starcraft-style strategy game, I thought isometric graphics were beautiful at the time. I recently researched and discovered that there is a spiritual successor from the same creators called "Supreme Commander".
      - "MDK" I must have only seen the demo and I don't really remember what the stages are like, I remember more the character who was stylish, looked like an Alien. I remember reading in a magazine that it was made by 20 people, and I was surprised because I thought there were a lot more people who made it. I saw that they recently released a remaster of MDK2, so MDK will certainly be the first of these series that I will revisit.

    • @backlogbusters
      @backlogbusters  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @rrodrigocabral My memory constantly betrays me too haha! 20 game demos is still a ton! I feel like most disks I have only came with a max of 10 but usually 5ish and a lot of videos in really low quality
      I’m not an investigative report with the skill to do it, but i’m now very invested in how magazines released across the world! I assume CD Expert wrote their own articles, but did they get a re-branded PC gamer disk from their parent company or buy up the right to repackage those? Nintendo Power was big for me growing up, but I’m actually not sure if that was available outside of North America… Was there a version in Brazil? Also did you subscribe to PC Expert and get the disk through that subscription or just pickup the magazine on store shelves? I know for a while I was buying individual magazines from the store, based on the demo disk before I eventually subscribed and got them monthly.
      For Myth I’m surprised a full RTS like that was given away, I thought it would have been a much smaller indie-like game!
      For Total Annihilation I think I only know of the name because of the ‘Supreme Commander’ series which I played some of when it released and remember the ‘spiritual successor’ bit being talked about, but with the scope of supreme commander I really want to go see how much of the *large scale* total Annihilation was able to create when it came out so much earlier
      For MDK I finally made the connection that this game came into my path when I was looking into the earthworm Jim studio! I had no idea MDK2 was made by BioWare!? I’d really need to go check these games out, thanks for pointing out that there is a remaster for MDK2! And it seems like GOG has the first one so luckily those are easy to find today!

      @@backlogbusters Although the magazines had international origin/investment, they had original content, made by Brazilian editors, so I believe that the choice of these demos and the creation of the CDs were made exclusively for here. (I would suspect that the magazine was owned by PC Gamer, and they only decided to use the name "PC Expert" for marketing or localization).
      Here existed the magazine "Nintendo World" which was official from the local company that had a partnership with Nintendo to redistribute its products, but I never had contact with the Nintendo magazine at the time. (A curiosity: In Brazil, Nintendo is a rich man's console, and Sega is a poor man's console. The company behind Sega, TecToy, has always been more successful in localizing, publicizing, and offering products at better prices).
      Oh, the 2CDs of "PC Expert" didn't need to be signed, they came in the magazine you bought at the newsstand, and were very cheap, converting to something like 10 dollars, I imagine the complete games were already a little old. "Myth" is from 1997 and the magazine who gave it is from 1999.

    Personally, I also find it worth mentioning the "community" in the game in that you really get a bond with some of the NPCs that you visit and, later, revisit. Sounds kinda lame but the humorous dialogues bind it nicely together imo. This is only further amplified in Tomba! 2.
    A comment on the music as well, certainly one of my favourite soundtracks from that era of video games. Especially also taking into account the massive ambience changes when you "purify" an area from the curse of an Evil Pig. Couple of my favourite soundtracks from the game below;
    th-cam.com/video/lQJ4pZMtXWw/w-d-xo.html
    th-cam.com/video/TpySnJlX2s8/w-d-xo.html
    th-cam.com/video/-XBlycA9FzE/w-d-xo.html (of course!)
    Lastly, I should add that Tomba! 2 is equally great. DEFINITELY worth a playthrough, and if it goes in the backlog, I will be here to watch the review. Without wanting to spoil anything, as an optional listen I have added a few soundtracks from that one as well.
    th-cam.com/video/LclTb9qMTew/w-d-xo.html
    th-cam.com/video/5OHiuUFJe28/w-d-xo.html (a personal favourite of mine)
    th-cam.com/video/zoMqto8UtpA/w-d-xo.html (has given me nightmares for 25 years now)

      @@backlogbusters I played 2 but never got that far, the early 3d was more messy dated in appearance while the sprite work of the original is alot more timeless to look at, much like chrono trigger, all it needs is upscaling to a nice resolution, something emulators provide in spades
