    • @munmunyee

I was thinking how the game is in part, a masterclass - if not at least a celebration of "classic" Japanese dungeon design and overland exploration. In turn, classic japanese dungeon design hearkens back to tabletop RPGs and the original D&D. In part, the game has a thesis of answering "what is a sword-and-magic RPG?" "what is dungeon progression?", which Miyazaki and FromSoft have had 25 years to define and refine their own answer to.
Something that I particularly love about Elden Ring is the ambiguity of powerscale. Just looking at Limgrave alone, most people, especially newcomers, would consider the Godrick Soldier enemy camp at the Gatefront to be a pretty significant earlygame encounter, with the captain functioning as a miniboss. And to the community at large, the Tree Sentinel and Night's Calvary are considered bosses. However, the game uses the language of "Enemy Felled, " implying that in the grand scheme of things, those bosses were akin to a typical field/random proc encounter in an older RPG (FF3/6, Zelda 2, Pokemon). Even the Grafted Scion, who has the Enemy Felled text if you beat it at the beginning of the game, shows up with a normal healthbar in later encounters. By comparison, DS3's Iudex Gundyr has "Heir of Fire Destroyed." giving the impression that even that first encounter was a major boss.

The snes couldn't even render different sized sprites at the same time and it's cpu would never have been able to keep up with so many. Even with reduced color, completely 2d, less layers, and a SuperFx chip in the cart this would have run at like 5 seconds per frame.

They can fake sprites with background layers- look at Secret of Evermore for how good SNES RPGs looked with massive bosses. See Tales of Phantasia for animation and even a theme song. With a lot more memory we'd see more impressive titles on the SNES without special chips even.
