ShakeAlert: An earthquake warning from your cellphone

    ShakeAlert is a prototype earthquake early warning system for the West Coast. ShakeAlert for cellphones would warn users when ground shaking from a nearby earthquake will reach them, allowing time to duck and cover, as in this video dramatization.
    ShakeAlert is currently being tested by some utilities, transportation systems and cities to shut down critical systems that could be damaged or cause injury during
    violent shaking.

      yeah... everything since they open their system to manufacturer and you can easily get a permit to add the system to your own equipment while the US have restriction what you can place it in.

    might be wise for the teacher to give her students a countdown so they can know when to expect the quake to hit

    • @CharlieRAnimaMX
      @CharlieRAnimaMX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      [someone from Mexico here].
      In fact countdowns are not as easy or reliable as one would really think. This is because there are 3 main factors, the first is the origin/distance of the first sensors (since a good part of the arrival time depends on how far or near it has occurred)
      The second is that not all earthquakes spread and move in the same way. and the third and most important are the delays in decoding and network saturation. [one of the reasons why, for example, the Mexican seismic alert system has plans but has not yet adopted the Cell Broadcast model and despite the existence of mobile Apps these are not reliable] and instead is based on the NOAA weather band and EBS radio and TV.
      -so that, for example, in practice for Mexico City, the average warning time is 50 seconds; however, there are cases in which the time has reached almost 2 minutes or very short [20-30 seconds, in coastal areas it is sometimes only 10-15 seconds] or, for example, as in what happened in 2017, since it was an internal earthquake, there was no alert because it occurred much closer to the city than to the sensor area itself.
      In turn, the type of soil affects a lot so that there are areas where it begins to be felt before others and in some cases the soil itself acts as an amplifier and is perceived or creates more damage than the rest.
      [so a countdown could be more dangerous in terms of someone who could get more stressed, or trust because "they still have time"].
      Here on youtube the community of fans of the system have several videos where we compare the performance of the system based on the monitor of the sensors (which shows a simulation of the waves and time of arrival) the response of the radios and the images or effects on TV (or in some cases at home)
      -Other systems, like the Japanese, also do not show countdowns for the same reasons (and because in general, being a relatively small country, even in their videos you can notice that the times between the alert and the movement are minimal)

    Link this to the EAS so that earthquake alerts can trigger emergency alerts on TV and phone

    • @GaomonAndLucario
      @GaomonAndLucario 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is that the EAS was designed to be set up in certain areas for the alerts. You can't just automatically send one out, you have to manually highlight/select what areas get the alert and then type out a message and then you got to send it, then the message has to decode BEFORE it can be broadcasted. By this point, earthquakes hits, and people are dead/injured. It can't be linked to the EAS because the EAS is terribly slow for this kind of thing. It's quick, sure, but it isn't THAT quick.

    A Example before the Earthquake shakes

  • @heniohoyo7075
    @heniohoyo7075 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    We've had this app (an others) in Mexico for some years already, as part of a nationwide warning system that includes i.e. seismic sensors across the country, conected to a central warning centre, that in case of a large earthquake, triggers public alarms in all schools, hospitals and government buildings, and in an array of speakers on the streets. Also, we perform city-wide drills at least once a year, and each institution (either public or private) must have both safe zones and trained emergency coordinators in each floor of their buildings. So apps like this helps in case you are not at work or at the streets, and also give you an estimate of the time you have to leave the building / go to a safe zone within it. It´s not a perfect system, but buys you precious time, generally around 45 seconds and up to 1:30 mins, depending of the distance to the origin.

      Joe Diver The sad part is that we've had the funds for almost a decade to give all Californians access, but every few months, USGS says that they don't have enough money or that it's still "being tested". It's been proven over and over to properly and accurately work, so I want to know the real reason! I've been told by a neighbor who works for USGS that the "higher ups" don't want us to have it because it would "scare" the public.
