I am ordering 4 low-end low-cost android phones for this purpose only. Come to think of it, all the retired or already-forgotten old smart phones should be taken out from our drawers and mobilized into this endeavor. I am very hopeful and seriously expect crowd efforts can better and save many lives over time. Great job, and my salute to you guys.
I have a question , would it be helpful to you if i download the app but do not live in active seismic zone , rather a zone 2 ? I am studying seismology as part of my thesis work, so gladly contribute in collecting more data through this app.
I think you should suggest downloading it on tablets too! They are more likely to be sitting on a table for longer periods of time. The app seems to work fine on both my Samsung S4 and Nexus 7. Thanks for removing the "contacts" permission. Nice to see an app actually demand fewer permissions.
+Jennifer Strauss Can you please confirm that this app at the present time does not give any earthquake warnings--that warnings are a future feature? I'm reading conflicting things on the topic.
There's another App in the Google store that has an alarm that goes off when a certain magnitude of shaking is reached. This App really needs some sort of alarm system, so that users can turn it on when they go to bed. I would rather wake up to an alarm rather than waking up to my roof caving in on me. Also, I'm not sure what the point is in installing a service that runs all the time. I can't seem to shut it off without forcing it to stop. I don't think you want to record movements as I travel about.
Hi! Glad to help, the only "problem" I see is that the message "waiting for phone to steady" won't go away, is this normal? My device (I9070) has a small curvature (native to the model).
We would like to use this app of yours in our thesis. However, we are concerned that it would be sent to your system even though it is not a true recording from earthquakes.
+Jennifer Strauss Thanks for the response Jennifer, how do I know that after 30 minutes my device actually went into a mode where I know it was providing you data in a steady state. How about a counter or nice graph to show the time periods when my device was in a steady state? Without something like this, there is no feedback about the success of the install.
Does that mean that if a user mainly uses their mobile device in their hands or in their pockets, the data retrieved from it would be useless? My phone is seldom laying flat on a table.
👍 First you need a hardware infrastructure fixing a solar 📱on the highest roof or chimney top 🏭 in every settlement of 🕌🌉those often --states --hit by EQ and additionally the individual 📱 Tablet - and of course 🎶(joke) !

LOVE IT, now I don't have to report what we feel on the website. I've installed it in So. Calif!!

+Alejandro Reyes I have the same issue here, doesn't seem right. Phone is rock-steady on charger for 5 minutes or more, and that status never changes.
wow
When are you guys going to make an app like this one but for the I phone users also?
When is the IOS App Store coming the MyShake app ?
So it works only after the earthquake.
Also I just found a MyQuake app for my IPhone 7plus and it's also by UC Berkeley is this tiur guys app for the IPhone users?

MyShake is a cute name for a cataclysmic detection app. Should use a Weeble as a logo icon.
For a small simple app MyShake requires a lot of permissions.
My phone says "waiting for phone to steady" laying flat on solid table for 1 hour now...
+dave booth mine too, perhaps it is getting a baseline for 24hours for rhythmic patterns when at rest so it can distinguish seismic activity.

Does this app support Japan?
or can we use it wherever we are?
Waiting for the iOS version :)
If it works best when on a stable table, would it be of any use if I had it in my hands or in my pocket?
+Lingus Clyde no, the accelerometer won't have a way of distinguishing body movement from ground movement..
Does that mean that if a user mainly uses their mobile device in their hands or in their pockets, the data retrieved from it would be useless? My phone is seldom laying flat on a table.
yeah, most probably, depending on the phoneand person... Maybe it is time to get another phone for just laying on the table then? :P
Hahaha perhaps
Lingus Clyde You can get the S5, which is a very capable phone for like 150usd from ebay anyway :D
Great idea and app! Please release it to iOS. Cheers!
It says it is incompatible with my phones - Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE :(
Could you please take a look and fix that?
Jennifer Strauss Thanks, will do! :)
How do I remove it from being in the foreground?
When is it for Windows Phone?
When is it for IOS?
+Trevor Short They're working on it. No estimated time yet.
Does this not need location services to be turned on?
+Jennifer Strauss Oh, hm I always have my location services turned off because it sucks a lot of my battery's juice.
What is Z axis use for?
and how can i know how many magnitudes(Ritcher Scale) if the earthquake happens?
You could also use tensorflow to help make predictions of future earthquakes. Checkout www.tensorflow.org/
Is this when your not rioting in the streets
Really helpfull
Battery killer app
👍

wow
dis will be useful in bed :D
MY SHAKE IS FAKE MOVE YOU PHONE
man, if you shake your phone, the accelerometer will detect. It isn't fake...
