  • Retracing the Dragonfly Sea features a Kenyan author Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor who wrote a book called "The Dragonfly Sea" based on a Chinese descendant from the Zheng He - shipwrecked sailors in Lamu, Kenya.
Yvonne takes a cultural flight to Lamu to connect with her muse, Sharifa Mwamaka, and immerse herself once more in the rich heritage that the Lamu archipelago holds.
Through her eyes, we sample the sights and sounds, the food, and the cultural ways of the Lamu people.

I got goosebumps when Yvonne handed Mwamaka, our Ayaana, her copy of the novel. Her story. Her history. Her people. Her island. More goosebumps when Mwamaka shows her mother the map and points out for her to see where their island is. Excellent work, Bob Nyanja and crew.

This was brilliant! Yvonne's wonderful book led me to this and I am almost angry at myself for not knowing such a rich and continuous history. Thank you so much for this!

Adhiambo is so cute. I loved the book - complex writing but I did it. In 2020 when i was home with COVID I sat by river and took it in bit by bit. Hopefully I'll make it to Pate sometime soon.

Our history books need to be reviewed. We were fed alot of lies.

Our ancient pasts were deliberately amputated so the brutal johnny-come-latelys could dare to say that we had no history until they came along. The real madness is that even after independence we went along with the nonsense and did not bother to correct the lies.

And yet we waste numerous days discussing useless, un-ending politics. This is what we should spend our time on. Discovering ourselves and discovering each other. Thank you Yvonne Adhiambo.
