    That ending might be the most honest review I've ever seen, the sentiment of "its not perfect, but it doesn't have to be a 10/10 for you to really enjoy it" . Its good to see that even years into boardgame reviewing, the SUSD team haven't reduced it all to numbers and "which game is best is all that matters". They still genuinely love the hobby, and thats awesome.

    Had the loveliest time at SPIEL this year playing Taverns. An older lady just sat down at the Schmidt Spiele booth and said "Do you want to try this game?". She explained the game in like five minutes and set it all up. We thought she was working at the booth but she just had a lot of fun playing it before and wanted to play it again. She won of course but we had so much fun and decided to buy the game right away. The vanilla version plays really quick but I'm really looking forward to trying out the different modules.

    Wow. I would have likely avoided the game following this review, but I actually bought it months ago, sneaking in an international order here to the states, and I must say that I adore this game. The warmth you refer to many times is such an easy way of describing this games' greatest appeal. I'm glad I picked it up before I saw this because I think I'd be missing out on a wonderful board game.

      I don't consider this a negative review. Pointing out some flaws, which might matter more to some people than others, doesn't mean the game goes into the fire. That was kind of the point. However, I must admit, the review does drop the game from "buy" to "play first" for me.

    "So everything is going wrong. But don't worry; it's probably your fault." "And so just like when you have a mental breakdown at Ikea, it's likely you'll develop a fixation with tables." Just a couple examples of the way SU&SD uses humor to complement explaining a game's basics and examining what works and what doesn't. Its rare that I fully agree with SUSD, and this is another time. This is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. For me, the theme is great, the game play is phenomenal, and I can keep playing it without it getting old. Get his game, its fucking amazing. (Yes, module 1 is kind of dull, but the modules are there to help you learn the full game.)

    Personally, I love a bit of randomness in a game. My favourite tabletop games are the ones that have a solid bit of strategy but also some randomness thrown in. Makes you feel less like you lost because you suck and gives you that kind of “Hey, better luck next time!” spirit.

    They summed up a lot of my thoughts about this game pretty dang well actually, however, in spite of it's flaws, I think I love this game quite a bit more than they do. The game is just a toasty warm mug of fun, with quite a lot of interesting strategy once you manage to get a game going with a table full of people who are down to play ALL of the modules. When that happens, it does in fact sing. And while it could be better and hopefully will one day be better when a really cool expansion drops, for now, it is just a fantastic addition to my collection and for at least this festive holiday season at least, this is the game that I seem to most want to play, which says a great deal. I don't know of any game out there that is perfect people. In spite of it's flaws, this is a great game!! I recommend making some colored cardboard bar backs so you can keep the bars assembled in the box between games. Really speeds up setup and tear down...

  • @losfp

    I don't quite agree with the conclusion (I enjoy both this and Quacks, but I like Die Tavernen quite a lot more) but an entertaining review as always. The simple change from a pool that resets on each turn to a deck that only reshuffles when you run out of cards means that you are far less likely to be hosed continuously, and you will always see the cards you just bought (except on the final round). I do agree though that Die Tavernen is at its best with all modules included. It feels like a complete game at that point, and the basic game feels like a neutered introductory version.

    My only complaint so far with this game is that I wish they had some tracker or pieces to represent the number of gold and beers you have to spend on your turn. I would add up my gold, moving dice off those spots as I went (so I knew it was already counted), then do the same to add up my beers, and fully forget how many gold I’d just counted. This game already has a nice tactile element, so I think little gold coins or beer pieces would be a fitting addition. We resorted to using the unused or spent server dice as counters.

    I played Taverns a Lot in the Past year or so and still like the game but it would need a small "patch" expansion tbh. Like you said in the review a lot of upgrading happens in the last round...that's sad. Also beer is the way to win big. Money has it's limits..after upgrading everything you can buy staff for 1 or 2 Points...I have seen someone getting 3+ Nobles in a turn with beer 3 times in a game. There was no chance competing with that. I know i know...he was lucky but still. A bigger focus on money isn't able to pull that off. I would like to see "Event Cards" that can be bought with money, that get cheaper and better if you have upgraded specific areas of the tavern and break the rules a little bit. Or group tables that let you combine a 3 and 4 guest fe. on one card.

    Really think you missed the mark on Taverns. Taverns theme comes through wonderfully and is a fantastic game. The upgrades are hugely important early in the game. Taverns for me and others I've introduced it to has an addictive quality. It is a breath of fresh air and a unique Euro that sets it self apart from so many other bland Euros.

    • @hattenkofer
      @hattenkofer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. Also having many tables is not nearly as important as they make it out to be. As you only ever have four to maybe six dice and you need at least one or two to make beer, you can only serve two or three customers, the point in having more out is only to give you a choice. If you concentrate on getting well-paying patrons, you don't need all that choice.

    • @DrMcFly28
      @DrMcFly28 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well this wouldn't be the first time SU;SD groupthinked themselves into thinking the game works in a very specific, rather unsatisfying way, while in reality they haven't even begun to explore the decision space properly. Still, this is an enjoyable review, and one should never base their decisions on single source anyways.

    • @jchaffer
      @jchaffer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hattenkofer The point of getting a lot of tables is not so that you can have a lot of patrons. It's so that the patrons don't get in the way of all your other upgrades coming out, like servers and brewers. I don't believe that "all the tables" is the only strategy as some of the BGG crowd seems to, but it is definitely a very very strong one.

    Thanks for the great opinions, i had been thinking i may want to get that game as it seemed like it has a lot of potential for kinda-fun, as it is a different theme from other games and it sounds like fun to have a game of running a tavern, but also i can get the sentimentality vibe from it just for the theme of an old cozy tavern,but i dont know now, it doesnt seem like much to it that would be interesting for long.
    Although, i didnt know about the extra variations until mentioned on here, so maybe those other additional activity add-ons would make it worth getting.
    I dont think any of my friends would like it though.

  • @PatrickKerwin
    @PatrickKerwin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    QUESTION: How much of the “bad turns” you experience, when you don’t GET what you want, or can’t DO what you want is 1) a game design issue, or 2) the player not strategizing enough/ knowing how to influence the outcome?
    I ask because (as you know) deck building is one of those interesting mechanics that can bite you in the butt if you don’t thin out your deck, OR counter balance it with increased luck mitigation.
    Anyone play Taverns and have thoughts on this?
    PS. I’m particularly concerned with the “it’s not worth it to upgrade your tavern until the very end” comment. I’m wondering if different players have an alternate experience within it.

    • @foodforthemoon7
      @foodforthemoon7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a handful of plays in now and I heartily disagree with the notion that it is not worth it to upgrade your tavern until the very end. On just about every path you can take in this game, some of the upgrades will be very beneficial and absolutely worth the money to get them out as soon as possible in the game. Given that the game is only 8 rounds, it is not going to be possible to get every upgrade along the way, and because of the fact that you can trash some cards to make upgrades cheaper, it does turn out where everyone tends to do quite a bit of trashing in the final few rounds in order to upgrade their bar as much as possible to acquire more nobles. This is just good strategy. In my experience, this game unfolds rather quickly over the course of just 8 rounds. It can be a struggle in that time to get a functional engine in place and often it does feel like the game does climax in that final round when everyone does all they can to get as many cards out as possible, only to ditch said cards for money in those final few (mostly the final) round in order to complete upgrades. This is not a flaw imo. It's just the nature of the game. It is not that it would not have been worth it to do the upgrades sooner, it just is not always feasible. From what I have seen in my plays, much rides on that final round. You want to get there, get as many cards out as you can, and do as much as you can in that round to score as many points as you can, including ditching cards to get extra bucks. It's just good strat.
      As to your other question about bad turns.... it happens. The game gives you means of getting around the bad draw by re-drawing, which is sometimes good strategy, but can also turn out worse. It's a deck builder. You have to focus on getting your deck fluid and keeping it there, which means not acquiring too many guests and getting rid of the crappy ones. Tables also help and are necessary, but they are not as helpful as everyone seems to think in my experience.

    The 'h' in Tiefenthal is basically, kinda, silent.

    I‘m a fan of Taverns, not so much of Quacks. I feel like with Quacks you can be super unlucky when you draw ingredients and there’s nothing to be done about it. With taverns, you often get the opportunity to discard your cards and re-draw and even with a bad draw, you can still do enough to feel in charge.

    "It's a big shame that the theme doesn't quite land." - Didn't stop Viticulture from being considered a very popular board game, did it?

    Well, I felt exactly the same about it. But, I think there could have been a comment about player counts, as, personally, I found it to be determinant in the enjoyment I had with the game. For me, a game with every modules included just take a little too long for my taste at 4 players. A problem that could have been avoided if there was no "customer market row", since that is the only part not simultaneous.

    That was the Pokemon theme but I was definitely getting a Jennifer Beals in Flashdance vibe - I think it's the perm.
