  • How can we leverage mountain biking to make the world more inclusive? What do mountain biking ladies think about sexism in the mtb world (and beyond)? Is hate on social media a reflection of society? Is there systematic misogyny? Is it a coincidence that most Nobel Prize winners are male? How can mountain biking help build skills for life? In this episode I address these and many more questions, sharing some of the wild comments I got below my last TH-cam video (which contained a cheeky joke, that prompted some men to write pretty outrageous comments below it, and MANY people to write absolutely LOVELY comments and even send me super appreciative emails 😍)

Hi Roxy, I am a female mtber. Sadly we are in the minority. People who write these comments are definitely insecure that you ride way better than them and they cannot handle the fact that you ride better than them. I find your videos really helpful and it really encouraged me to see such an awesome female mtber i.e. you, creating these videos and teaching me and my hubby how to ride. Women are definitely not the weak gender and I experience sexism from men while riding. For example, they do not want to let me pass and/or they assume that I do not how to ride whenever I visit a bike store and basically ignore me. The bike store workers only ever acknowledge my husband even though I am looking at tyres for my bike. It is like they cannot understand that I would want such aggressive tyres...Whenever I am riding, I do not see other women sadly. I do hope that more women will ride and your videos will be so useful to future mtbers and current mtbers too :) Thanks Roxy so much for all your help!

Hi Dr. Teddy (what a cute name BTW🧸),
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for your kind words - your comment truly means a lot to me! ❤️ I’m so glad my videos have been helpful for both you and your husband. It’s incredible to hear that you’re out there riding and breaking through those outdated stereotypes. THANK YOU for doing so and for commenting!
I completely understand the frustration you’ve described - whether it’s not being acknowledged in a bike shop, being underestimated on the trail, or experiencing outright dismissiveness, it’s something so many women in MTB face. It’s disheartening, but OUR determination and presence in the sport are exactly what’s needed to drive and change. Thanks again for being part of it. You’re absolutely right - women are not per se the weaker gender, (although we do have less physical strength and this accounts for some of our struggles) and I firmly believe that our community can grow stronger when more people realize that. Every time you confidently ride a trail or hold your ground in a bike store, you’re challenging those stereotypes and paving the way for others.
I also share your hope that more women WILL get into mountain biking - at least that's what I'm here to DRIVE. The more visible we are on the trails, in bike shops, and in content like videos and podcasts, the faster we’ll normalize the idea that MTB is for everyone, regardless of gender, age, or whatever.
Keep riding, stay confident and thank you for being an inspiration yourself!
      Much love,
      Roxy ❤️

These are just guys being touchy and insecure that a girl is that much better at them at MTB in general. Men should want to encourage female riders. The more women who are out there getting into riding and dragging their female friends with them, the greater chance men riders could end up with a girlfriend or wife who not only supports them buying a new bike but also who understands when they want to spend their free time heading out on a ride - and who will even ride with them. Why discourage us by putting us down? I know I’m not great but I’m always working on it and the more I ride the more confidence I build. Having guys smash us down is wasteful on their part. Hey Roxy, some people will always find fault with anything. You being a woman is a strike number one for some? It's easy to criticize but there is no validity to their comments. I cannot speak for the rest of the world but in the U.S. people are Selfish and inconsiderate of others and it's increasing all the time. The lack of face-to-face interaction has led to this. I was raised to treat people with respect and be considerate of others. I watch a lot of MTB skills videos which are most helpful, but you don't just make MTB skills videos YOU TEACH and Communicate to those who watch your videos, and most people enjoy and learn from them. This is a great podcast pointing out a massive worldwide problem. A lot of the issues going on in the world are due to the changes that are happening. For as long as civilization has been around, men have been the dominant power. Things are changing and women are becoming more and more powerful, as you mentioned, taking jobs, even many leadership roles and so on. Many men, not all of course, are freaking out about it. They can't see a world where everyone is considered equal.
Here in the U.S. we see this with the elections. We have a woman running for President and there is a lot of division and hate here towards women, minorities, and their rights. It's all fear driven and much of it is centered around these changes we are seeing in the world. Yeah, it's political as well as non-political around sports, work life, and everywhere else.
Thanks for the call out! 22:22

I made it my mission as head coach of my kids MTB club, to increase women coaches. I started with 2, 1 retired, so 1 as of 2021. By this year, we had 5, 1 of whom is taking over from me as Head Coach!
A woman is literally replacing Me! And I couldn't be prouder!!
I worked with a rookie female coach this year. I did everything i could, to have her lead the group in drills, as much as possible! For her experience, and for the representation it was such an important thing.

I believe you. I have disagreed with you a bit in the past, mostly not understand what you meant, but I do hope I kept it respectful and I assure you it had nothing to do with you being a woman. You are a good instructor, you know your stuff. To the comment of the idiot (who is free to have an opinion, no matter how dumb and biased it is). I do not get an unsexy or sexy vibe, that is not what we are here for and you certainly do not play on your looks. Training I have taken is a company owned by a woman - Minii Adventures. Ask Charlotte Batty, who runs Minii Adventures, if she has experienced sexism, then explain how she hasn't.
My female coaches experience it, and I see it. I call it out when I can, they are every bit as talented and willing to teach. One local woman who coaches has heard it so often, as she's in her 50s, and doesn't look like a pro. She laughs in their faces and asks how many World Cup of CX they have coached, she has 2 seasons.

I just want to ride without getting seriously hurt. Paper or certificate? I don't need one, just the knowledge and the motor memory. I have a regular bike and what i call a squishy bike. The squishy bike has benefits but i do feel a slight loss of energy to the squish. I tend to lock out the rear going uphill or set it to half squish. It does have DW link suspention which is nice. I like Laguna Seca ot Fort Ord which is fairly straightforward. Here and there are some small gullies washed out due to rain. They are a bother. I am thinking of getting knee pads but I am not sure. I have fallen a few times but so far i just had to dust myself off. Anyway I carry a small medical kit just in case. I watch your videos because you teach what I want to learn. One pedal at a time.

Thank you Mark. Happy to hear you found my videos helpful. You may not need a certificate but I would recommend (if you get a coach) to look that they have certifications, at least level 2 and ideally regular certs.
Will they prove that this person is a match? No.
But they will prove that this person is open to learn and act according to certain safety measures - which will keep you safe 😊
so if safety is a concern, then certified coaches do have advantages.
As for knee pads, I recommend G-Form. Super flexible. Machine washable.

@@benjy288and that precisely is the problem. You THINK you get the essence and then judge.
It’s called confirmation bias and it the number one thing that jeopardizes growth.
I’m not complaining - actually, if you had listened to the episode you would know that I turned the entire thing into a positive. And in retrospect I’m grateful for all the comments as it highlighted a much deeper problem.
      The real issue here js:
This is the second time you are patronizing/mansplaining me - AND not listening/being open to try things.
If you don’t like me and my content that’s ok. It truly is.
But then don’t waste your and my time by commenting on them - the only thing that this does is: it brings negativity into your and my life and tells the algorithm to show you more content like mine.
Go find stuff you like, comment on the stuff you DO like positively and contribute positively to the world.
It will bring back positivity into your life. Simple as that.
Because the fact that you chose to bring negativity into your and my life says more about you than it says about me. So you’re not insulting me here 😊
Btw - it’s not „supposedly“ stealing. I have proof. (I actually name some in this podcast)
But I have enough ethical awareness as to not share their details publicly - this video was a heads up to them - and some have already deleted their content, so they are fully aware 😊
Wishing you all the best, Benjy.

I'm genuinely curious if some of the comments are a manifestation of "extinction burst" where a negative behavior gets worse before it gets replaced by the desired behavior. As more women ride (excel in all areas not just mtb), have fun ALONG SIDE men on the trails, progress, have MTB YT channels, etc., etc., I wonder if the misogynistic trolling behavior (by men, for the sake of this argument) gets worse / more intense before it goes away. We women are ADDING to our world, not taking away from a male's experiences. I am just thinking out loud here as I recall some of my veterinary school education for counseling pet owners on behavior problems in dogs and cats. Plus, I wonder if some commenters want to outdo each other in the "Attention-seeking Atrocious Comment Department" competing for their 15 milliseconds of YT fame, instead of commenting more constructively. I am speaking from a human behavior point of view, not as a man-hater.

"Is it a coincidence that most Nobel Prize winners are male?" I don't think so. It's more likely because far more men are interested in Science. Women are typically more interested in the humanities etc. That is why the majority of woman are novelists. There are outliers like the two you mention, and that is very unfortunate. Your comment in the video regarding men being angry isn't due to them being displaced in the workplace. It's the forced acceptance of physical equality and emasculation of men. This obviously denies biological fact which is again why the vast majority of construction workers, firefighters, armed forces etc where physical strength is an advantage. Woman are also far more able at caring and counseling roles that require empathy. I also agree with you that many woman are vastly better riders than the average men. But denying that there aren't fundamental physical difference between the sexes is denying biology. Interestingly, somewhere in Sweden actually tried an absolute equality across all professions and in household, childcare roles etc and there was a rejection by the majority of women back to more traditional roles. I have a daughter and I want her to do whatever the hell she wants in life without sex restriction but we still have to consider human evolutionary biology. It's vastly more reliable than cultural changes in society. I think what I'm trying to say is most men simply love women and to some level feel like they have a protective roll towards them at a societal level, especially in the west. I don't believe hard-edged third wave feminist thinking that rejects that is a very good idea at a societal level. That doesn't mean I don't for one second want women to not be independent, quite the opposite, But I want men to care when a woman is being physically abused. Because, as a man, I know how violent men can be. Ultimately maybe men aren't as intelligent on average and women but if that is the case women should be able to finesse this situation and nurture the caring aspect I mentioned to the betterment of society as a whole.
