Considering the overflow hose was spraying onto the engine, and you had old seals leaking prior to the repair....its very likely the hot water, washed some old oil down the engine block making it look like there is a front main leak, when it was just some old residual oil mixed with hot water.
I'd clean it off as best you can and just watch for new traces.

These videos are excellent for me, as they reinforce the idea of getting rid of cars, and not getting any more of them. I was up to 7 at one point, and I spent almost my whole life dong nothing but being a slave to their requirements. So, I sold a bunch of cars, and now I'm down to a '69 911 S, an '82 928 S and a '97 Tommy kaira M20b wagon. Three of the most amazing cars ever made. And that is more than plenty for me!
Now I get my car fix and restoration enjoyment vicariously, through you, and other TH-camrs, and it saves me tens of thousands of dollars, and much heart ache every year! Thanks, Sam.

Great showmanship at the ending. Keep handling everything like a champ.👍
Other things... When cars sit for an extended period of time... Temperature humidity, ECT... Gaskets and seals will shrink. You will have to start and let stuff idle every few weeks to several months... even putt around... easy because a shrunken seal or gasket can develop a permanent leak going too hard.
Oil thins out when hot... Kept at a proper temperature it shouldn't seep out. I would replace the front seal just for the channel in my opinion... If there's no leaks and you plan to keep it for awhile I wouldn't worry about it.
Enjoyed the video keep em coming

If it only leaked oil after overheating, keep in mind that oil thins out with temperature so it would be thinner than normal operating conditions at that point and leak out easier. Also the overheating could have caused some internal pressure somewhere that helped force it out. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it started happening regularly.

    • @nicholasvinen
      @nicholasvinen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I snugged up the gas cap before when it first set but it wouldn't clear so I reset it and so far so good. Maybe the cap was loose, maybe one of the vacuum hoses are starting to harden and crack seeing how it's 15 years old. Can't do anything on modern cars without a capable code reader.

As others have already mentioned, probably just thin oil. So long as you take the time to warm the engine before doing power runs, I'd suggest going up one step on the viscosity using a high grade synthetic. You could also do a short oil change with some high mileage oil, just to get some seal conditioner to everything; just change it after 1-2k miles.

C'mon Sam, you know the rule with British cars. If its leaking fluids, it means it has fluids. Only worry when it isn't leaking anything! And as for the Ferrari, my guess, like others, that overflow from the coolant cleaned some oil from the top/crevices of the block. While part of me says replace that front seal as a good PM move, I'm also worried that everytime you crack something open to fix one problem, you risk opening up more problems. But really happy to see that 360 on the road under its own power. For many years of my life the 360 was I car I dreamt about too!

Glad you have had luck getting it sorted out. I have gone through similar issues with other European cars and it gets old.
I finally settled on a Lotus; fantastic handling and brakes with modified Toyota based engines. Dependability is almost Camry like, but with a manual tranny option; it is an amazing thing to have your exotic car start every time. I do my own maintenance and the insurance has been cheaper as well. I changed the oil, flushed the brakes and antifreeze and spent about $120 total and a day of my time. Next few years should just be oil changes at about $30 each/year running costs.
You can drive these hard and typically nothing breaks. Ironically, they are relatively rare so it gets more looks then many of the other exotics. You get most of the benefit but in a car that is cheaper to run and holds its value well. I could actually sell mine for more than I paid for it a couple years ago. Something else to consider down the road.
The best advice I can offer is to test drive one .... like nothing else I've ever driven and my favorite so far. Just drove a Porsche 991 and while it was a beast/amazing car, it felt numb and isolating and surprisingly it didn't leave me wanting one ; I prefer my slower but more engaging Lotus. To each their own and there are a lot of great cars out there to choose from.

Have you given this car an Italian Tune yet? Usually that fixes and cleans a lot of problems on Italian cars... but it introduces new ones... ;) So happy for you, Sam.

overheating engine causes pressure and this goes through the head gasket forcing the oil to pressurise and force itself out ......

Why does a $300,000 car have a plastic water pump impeller? At the manufacturing level they saved about $2 with the plastic.
If I bought one of these new I'd be ecstatic for saving that $2!

Probably. It's good they saved that quarter pound. I'm sure the owner is still thankful for that weight saving when he has to replace a $50,000 engine. 😂
With that kinda engineering I can well imagine what other "great ideas" they incorporated into this car.
My guess is they tried to save a $. If the car companies can save a penny over a thousand cars they'll do it. Even if it costs the owners thousands or kills hundreds.

@@Iconoclasher They definitely did it to save money, all businesses want to maximise profits. It's not just the cost of the part they save on. They save on the shipping costs of the car and the shipping of the parts. It's a fraction of a dollar for each one but if you're shipping a 10,000 parts and 10,000 cars all the weight savings translate into real money saved.

Lets help rookies : T-Stat is pithing the water cooling system : if you live in the cold like Buffalo you need water not moving in the engine so it will heat up
once a temp is met the water temp valve should open and allow water flow to radiator for cooling.

Per owners manual you should not exceed 4000 rpm until the oil is at or above 165-170 degrees Fahrenheit. Roughly the 1/4 mark on the oil gauge. You should put some miles on it and some of the issues will resolve naturally. Especially since this car has not been regularly used.
