    This is also the song where everyone says "when does Mitch breathe?" LOL

  • @debbierichardson9009
    @debbierichardson9009 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    This is where everyone starts wondering if Mitch can breathe through his ears. The control is insane

    • @LindaVernon
      @LindaVernon ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That's the thing about Mitch. It's not just his beautiful voice or the high notes, it's the control he has over his voice (eg. on Gold) that makes him so very special. 🙂

  • @iamjenniferjames
    @iamjenniferjames ปีที่แล้ว +51

    ♥ Ten years later and it still never gets old. Kevin lays down a beat track. Scott, Kirstie, and Avi sing three separate and unique melodies. Mitch (and his gills) sing the top, and they're all in perfect harmony.
    In a word ... madrigal.

    If you will react to 'Recording of Evergreen', you'll see a bit of how they do the arranging and mixing of voices. And it's fun to see how they make the magic.

    This was sung live on BYU channel in 2019, I think "Christmas Under the Stars" with Matt. It was really epic to see them perform this live. It's currently available on that channel, which is a free download, I believe. Makes me wonder if Mitch has learned how to do circular breathing because you seriously can't see or hear him breathing for the entire verses. All the songs they do at that concert are fabulous. God rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is another great one from that concert.

    This one is spectacular. So good. Glad they still do it. They are currently doing it on their christmas tour. (Fun fact. There was supposed to be a waterfall in the background but this was when they still did stuff themselves. They carried around a generator and when they got tired and still hadn't found the waterfall they decided this spot had to do, haha)

    Watched an interview where they talked about the filming of this video. They were trying to find a waterfall, hiked for a couple of hours, carting a generator. They decided to film by a stream, which you can hear in the background. And the generator died right when they were finished. And then they had to hike back. They laugh about it now.

    When you get a chance, you should watch one of their live performances of this. When this first came out, everyone was commenting on the intracacies but that it was possible b/c it was pre-recorded. Then, you watch them do it live and you are amazed at the layering, and the fact that Mitch doesn't breathe.

    I feel that PTX deserves 10’s. Not only because of their raw brilliant talent but because they are JUST VOICES. They can recreate song NOTES with their voice, they don’t even need words! They are bloody fantastic!
    Thanks!

  • @kegginstructure
    @kegginstructure ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You have asked about layering. But their blending is live. You can watch them in live performance. That should answer the question. AND it should blow you away that they get their layering live and real-time.

    I agree that was recorded in a studio and they are lip synching in the video. Maybe multiple takes. So the layering is easier to build and control in the studio. I guess, once they have it arranged the way they want, it gets easier to figure out how to do it live. Very good, none the less.
    Best Wishes, Chaps. ☮

  • @maryjanemckittrick4162

    Thank you, thank you, thank you!! This is the song that made me a fan! I was so blown away by it that I started digging around for more stuff by them. They knock it out of the park live, too. How they all remember the parts and stay in sync is beyond me.
    Yes! The live 90's Dance Medley is a must, and one for all the nay-sayers. 'Miles Rueben' channel on here has lives of lots of songs from their Hollywood Bowl livestream concert, and they're all excellent quality.
    I hear ya on the 'Kids on Christmas' one. I mean, I adore PTX, but that one won't reach my top ten by a long shot. It's fun and poppy, but just doesn't have the magic for me.
    Their 'Recording of Evergreen' is an interesting watch. Even if you don't react to it, it's worth the 15 or 20 minutes of your time just to get a sneak peak at how they arrange.
    Thanks again for this one, I've been crossing my fingers this would be on the list!
    (Wish me luck, btw. Today is traditionally the busiest Monday of the year for Post Office clerks. I have to ask 5 questions for every parcel that I process (every parcel, every day of the year, it's a monotonous job I have) and I have laryngitis. No voice whatsoever at this point. It's gonna be tricky to say the least).

    Howdy from Texas😁I’m so glad you did this one. They are just brilliant! And they do this one live . There is a live version on their Christmas Under the Stars special. Mitch is amazing with his breathing technique to keep going without seemingly to take a breath. Their ability to build their harmonies to create that beautiful wall of sound is such a magical beautiful thing to listen to. Keep up the great reactions . Wishing y’all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and Happy New Year.

    This was the first Pentatonix music video I saw after they won the contest. After watching it the first twenty times I searched and found out that they hadn't just disappeared after all. They already had several other videos. That was when I became a Pentaholic, before I knew that the fan base even existed. I'm curious about what song others saw first?

    Brilliant, saw a video of them doing this live and it was even better. Loving the festive attire too! I'd love to see you react to God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman and You're a Mean One Mr Grinch. One thing that always gets me is they take songs I don't normally like and blow my mind with it. 12 Days of Christmas I hate normally but their version is just madness! Ohhh and you're accepting my challenge, great!

    Up until their Evergreen album, they would record individually and submit where it would be mixed/produced. Their mini-documentary (15 or 20 minutes long) titled "The Making of Evergreen" by Pentatonix covers a brief two-week period where they actually did some recording together in the studio. Whether you react to it or not, it will show you a bit of what they do. One thing to remember is that after their win on the show "The Sing-Off," Sony almost immediately dropped the contract they had won, saying that Acapella was nothing that would be profitable for the company. These early videos are Pentatonix determined to get their work out by doing it themselves. Ben Bram can be seen at the piano in "The Making of Evergreen," coaching them. He is, for all intents and purposes, the sixth member of Pentatonix and has a hand in their arrangements of songs as much as each of them, a true group effort. He is the one who told Scott to add Avi and Kevin to "The Trio" and for them to go on "The Sing-Off" in the first place.

    Watch the live version. They sound same. Also did you react to the daft punk private performance where there's no microphones or any studio magic whatsoever but just 5 ppl coming together and singing. That proves without a doubt they don't need any post production or mixing. They sound identical to video except quieter with no microphones.

    The Story Behind the Song "Carol of the Bells" Originated from Ukraine
    "Carol of the Bells," popular among Christmas revelers in the U.S.A., has its roots in old Ukrainian folk songs. Building on this, Ukrainian composer and music teacher, Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych, wrote Shchedryk in 1916. The English lyrics were written by American composer, Peter J. Wilhousky, thus truly making it a Christmas song of the Western world. The lyrics are copyrighted today, but the original Ukrainian piece is not.
    The name of the song is derived from the Ukrainian word ‘shchedryj’ which means bountiful. The history of the song begins when Oleksander Koshyts, a respectable choir director, commissioned the composer to create a song based on existing Ukrainian folk tunes. This prompted the finding of a piece in an anthology of melodies, which would go on to be a precursor of the Carol of the Bells, as we know it today.

    Since you said you want to see a live version of this song by them, I have attached a link to them performing it on the CBS show The Talk back in 2012. Since it's on a daytime show, it was performed live with no post production at all. In fact, unlike the production version, you can see when Mitch takes a breath in the live performance. Enjoy!
