I couldn't agree more about the Yamaha AG series mixing consoles. I've had my AG06 for two days, and having never touched ANY sound recording/mixing devices, found this to be incredibly intuitive. Thanks for the review!
That's an interesting little device, and I like the way you highlighted all the various features. It would be nice if a few more of the built-in features had knobs instead of having to go through the software for most of it, but using the software has its advantages too, like being able to save settings and such.
hey George, follow up. i picked up the AGO3. had issues down loading the correct drivers and the computer recognizing it. But finally got that resolve. In frantic mode I tried contacting Yamaha support and service. The only option is email. i got an auto response that a rep would call. 24 hours later that hasn't happened. not there are different drivers , so if you have issues you might have to try different ones. That said. For voice over, I love it. and the dsp function is a sweet option. thanks for the great review. if you do voice over and want to eliminate clutter on your desk top with a great sounding unit, the AGO 3 is a really a great choice. Except for the driver issues I had, I give it 5 stars.
Hey, George! I'm a VO who's beginning to podcast - and a couple friends pointed me to this device especially for the loopback feature. But I thought - "what does George think?" and typed in "Whittam's World AG06"... Your enthusiasm has pushed me over the edge, I'm in! :)
This looks great. My question is where would it live in my home studio. Could this be in addition to my pre-amp and my audio interface or does it replace one (or both)? Thanks, George!
I'm wondering the same thing. I just purchased the Audient ID22 and the routing for Skype & phone patch is a bit of a challenge. So George, where does this fit in the chain?
+Keith Korneluk This was really designed to be used in place of a pre-amp and interface, since it's both. You could use it with both units, but it would be redundant, unless you have a very special mic preamp.
Would it be possible to do an episode on how to set this up to do a Skype directed session instead of having to use the Skype recorder and Audio Hijack with Soundflower?
+David Smith You don't need to any of this monkey business if all you are doing is being directed over Skype, David. You just can provide playback. George
Thanks George! What's the difference between the fader on the left and the gain knob above the DSP EQ/COMP area? It seems like they both control the volume of the mic.
The question is if you can record a phone call in a way that the person who feed in via 3.5 Phone jack, will be able to hear everything except his own voice. Like a real "Mix Minus" ?
Hey George, good review on the AG03. I do v/o and produce radio/television commercials. I use Adobe CC, and was wondering what the ease of use is for multi-track recording? In other words can previously recorded mx/fx tracks be monitored into the headphones or speaker monitors from the USB while recording and monitoring a vocal track into Adobe without everything dumping down to the track that you're trying to record just voice. Clear as mud right. Thanks appreciate any kind of feed back, I'll keep an eye.
George this review came a great time. Disappointed that my Duet Apogee recently failed on me and am now in search of a new preamp. Would this be a good replacement?
Hi,Thanks in advance for you enlightening, I have some questions:Can I use Yamaha as standalone interface without using computer to plug in a guitar and a Mic? If so, can I use any USB mobile or iPad charger to make it operative? I´ve been using a good recording app in my iPad called AURIA which I am familiar with, does that Yamaha AGs compatible with any recording app in iOS or just Cubasis LE that come with it? Thanks a lot!
George, would the AG03 be a good enough pre amp for use with a high end mic like a Neumann TLM 103 and if not, what would you recommend for that mic? Thanks...
Hey George I was wondering what your thoughts are on mxl 990 microphones for voice over work? Or if you had a suggestion of another brand for a vo newbie :)
Hi George. I'm in the midst of looking for a VO solution for my home studio. Up until yesterday I had just about decided on the Focusrite 212. But my main need thankfully to a new client is a phone patch. Through lots of googling, I've come up with the idea that Skype is the way forward as I've super fast broadband. So, is this the way to go? I'm less concerned about playback, as I am wanting the client to be able to hear the VO as I record, give direction after but without it being recorded. If you or anyone here can give me the easiest set up to do this, with either this piece of kit or the focus rite 212 etc, please let me know as I'm a bit of a technical newbie. If this is the piece of kit to get, I'll buy it tomo! Also should I have one mac recording everything and use my iPad for Skype etc? Just wondering how best to keep the space function, clean and user friendly - as having a mic screen I already feel is getting in the way of doing long scripts! thanks!
+Liam O'Brien The Google Search rabbit hole can be a massive time investment and source of confusion! Have you given all the other Whittam's World videos a look that cover these topics? George is happy to consult you on this at vostudiotech.com, Liam.
Hi George, Thanks so much for this video. I am new to the v/o business (very) A question....If using the Yamaha AG03 do you still need to have a internal or external sound card to turn the analog from the microphone into digital? Thanks for your advice and appreciate your videos GREAT advice all around for v/o community.
+Edge Studio I bought it after being convinced by your review. I saw it a few times already. I'm new to all of this. I just had a question if you for you. I've been looking but i can't find the answer. I guess my lack of skills in the audio world is showing up. It's about the keyboard input. I wanted to add another external audio source to it but i don't know what cables i need to plus in there. I mean can i use balanced cables there or does it need to be unbalanced cables? The manual says when the guitare buttin is pressed you have to use unbalanced cable there or it will interfere but it doesn't say if i can use balanced cables if the button isn't pushed. Also when you press the mute button will it mute the mic and guitare channel only or will it mute the keyboard channel too? I'm really sorry to bomb you with questions!
I love the loopback feature that allows for easy playback of audio to clients with the flip of a switch. However, on tests I've done, when loopback is engaged...the person on the other end of the ipDTL call can hear the audio being played back just fine but if they talk while it is in loopback mode they still hear themselves with a delay. I was under the assumption that in loopback mode you'd be able to play the audio for the person on the other end and they would not get the "loopback" under any circumstance. Am I wrong on that??

I LOVE my AG03!

+Dave Angell sorry to hear about the driver issues, Dave. Windows, I'd guess? I had no issues with Mac so far.

+Keith Korneluk This was really designed to be used in place of a pre-amp and interface, since it's both. You could use it with both units, but it would be redundant, unless you have a very special mic preamp.
+Jeremy Ryan Yes, with all of the power of the iD22, it doesn't have the ability to loopback built-in.
If I set - input mix. Will I hear sounds from a computer (e.g. voice from a video communicator) on headphones?
Would it be possible to do an episode on how to set this up to do a Skype directed session instead of having to use the Skype recorder and Audio Hijack with Soundflower?
+David Smith You don't need to any of this monkey business if all you are doing is being directed over Skype, David. You just can provide playback. George
Do you know how much power the headphone amp have? I wonder if i can get 110db volume with a 250 ohms headphone
Thanks George! What's the difference between the fader on the left and the gain knob above the DSP EQ/COMP area? It seems like they both control the volume of the mic.
+BloombergVO Gain sets the preamp level to the USB output, and Level fader is the level to your headphones/speakers.
The question is if you can record a phone call in a way that the person who feed in via 3.5 Phone jack, will be able to hear everything except his own voice. Like a real "Mix Minus" ?
The AG03 cannot do a real "mix-minus" like you describe.
I would recommend this over any simple audio interface. I mean why anyone would want just interface if you can have so much more.
Could you review the Sennheiser MK4 Digital

+davidangellvoiceover.com Yes, you can do just that, just depends on position of the loopback switch.
This is a good exhibition because the actor complete entire session by exactly this ag06.
George this review came a great time. Disappointed that my Duet Apogee recently failed on me and am now in search of a new preamp. Would this be a good replacement?
Yes, I believe that it would be, Angie!

Yes, it operates stand-alone with any USB power supply/charger. You can use it with any iOS software. It's really versatile!

Hi George! Are you able to bypass the mic preamp? I have an external that I love.
Not on channel 1, but Channel 2 has no preamp. GeorgeThe.Tech
George, would the AG03 be a good enough pre amp for use with a high end mic like a Neumann TLM 103 and if not, what would you recommend for that mic? Thanks...
+Jim Laird I think the AG03 is perfectly fine with a high-end mic!
Hey George
I was wondering what your thoughts are on mxl 990 microphones for voice over work? Or if you had a suggestion of another brand for a vo newbie :)
Possibly the best sub-$100 XLR mic available for VO!

+Michael Vlaco The AG03 interfaces via USB to the PC/Mac, no other sound card required.
Nope, the USB interface is built right in! GeorgeThe.Tech
I bought this yesterday
hi I have a radio show do you think it will work what do you recomend me that is not to spensive I new on this and a little tie on budget
How many mics? How many outside sources? It could work well. GeorgeThe.Tech
hi, i am getting this mixer would it be good for vocal recording???
+Narain Sritharan Can't imagine why it wouldn't work well for recording vocals.

+Jeff Augustine No, you're right, it is too simple of a unit to be able to create a "mix minus" with only one audio stream in/out of the unit.
this or a focusrite solo?
Focusrite Solo is dead simple, so if you don't need the features of the AG03, go that way! GeorgeThe.Tech
Subbed!
noise.. when you talking..
