  • 1930 Leave It To Me Cocktail Recipe - Glen And Friends Cocktails After Dark
This classic cocktail recipe comes from the 1930 prohibition era cocktails book 'Cocktails by Jimmy' - it is a simple Gin cocktail, a 3 ingredient cocktail recipe. Like many cocktail books of the depression era, this one doesn't give any instruction for how to mix or serve the cocktail.
    Leave-It-To-Me
    4 parts dry gin
    1 part lemon juice
    1 part grenadine

It’s endlessly fascinating to me how changing out the brand or type of ingredient can make such a big impact. And I love watching you puzzle things out, trying to figure what alcohol is contributing what flavour

Just from the visual, I much prefer the first two over the fluorescent orange of the Rose's.
Now I'm off to find the home made grenadine recipe.
    Cheers from California, USA

I don't know what fruit is in the Rose's Grenadine as they don't say, just 'natural and artificial flavoring' and lots of food colouring. They don't seem to sell it in the UK, but many of the brands (monin, funkin, teisseire) here seem to approximate the flavour profile with blackcurrant and other fruits.

Great video and a simple intriguing cocktail. I'm finding I often add a little gomme or simple syrup when using lemon. Just a splash to take off the edge. Thanks so much for another wonderful video.

Gomme has been my MOST IMPORTANT find in recent years in mixing drinks.

That was fun. I was hoping that last drink would hit the nail on the head as those products are VERY easy to obtain. Had time allowed, it would have been interesting to see you make the last adjustments to meet Julie's taste suggestions.

I absolutely agree with you when it comes to finding the flavors that you like. For a long time I didn’t like Gin. But The only one I had tried was Tanqueray. Then I tasted Sapphire and Hendrix and fell in love with Gin’s.

Got all of this in my homebar, might have to try it out. Dash of Angostura or orange bitters maybe?
Update: Used Tanqueray, Liber & Co Grenadine and added some Angostura. Pretty refreshing, bitters add another layer to the cocktail. Might be a fun one to experiment with.

I'd imagine if you used Rose's grenadine it would cancel the lemon, since it's so sweet. But, I wouldn't do that. (posted this before I saw the Rose's experiment) I'd back off the lemon instead. I use Jack Rudy - which is a US west coast brand. Liber is supposed to be good as well.

I want Julie's job ... Glen mixes up a cocktail or makes a delicious food and she shows up at the end, "hey Glen, hey Friends..." and slurps it on down!
And I REALLY dislike Grenadine! It always tastes a little bitter like cough syrup to me ... I think I need to try your homemade stuff....

  • @Cfdoose

It would be interesting to try it shaken (in light of the citrus). Wondering how aeration would change it.

does your store bought grenadine have any actual pomegranate juice in it? Because I just checked Rose's Grenadine Syrup and the ingredients are: HF Corn Syrup, Water, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Benzoate, Red 40 , "Natural and Artifical Flavors", and Blue 1.

I like Genever but I don’t much like London Dry style gin. Genever is very hard to get here in Florida. Some stores here used to stock a variety of Genever supposedly popular in Quebec (presumably for snowbirds from Canada): I didn’t like that one as much and I haven’t seen it here for years.
