1000/1000 fiber for 25$
Fibre, problems were from years ago.
Fiber, I only utilize 100/100 though. More than enough for my needs.

DSL through AT&T for at least a decade. At best 16 Mbps down, 1.5 up. Don't stream, still have DirecTV for my mother and I use TH-cam pretty much.
Guys like you, Leg Arms, and your dad are a very impressive, yet sadly, dying breed. You fellas are extremely self sufficient. Lots of sweat, brain power, and cooperation required to achieve what you guys do. Great examples of what men should be. 👍👍
It consistently amazes me the talents and skills you, your dad, and your brother have.
And each person has a different talent which compliments the others.
This is why I like TH-cam, to see people excited about things they enjoy. We have been on fiber now for almost a year in town, and have had way better service and customer service than we did with cable internet.
I watch the Welkers for the farming and mechanicing content, never thought I’d see a whole video about my day job.

Here’s my walking uphill backwards in the snow to school story.
When computers finally came to the market, we had a VIC 20, tape drive, 2500 baud modem. 3k of total ram (thats three icons today) He he. I was in high school by then and did my senior paper on a dot matrix printer.
If you could have seen a teenager version of me I would have lost it. Back in the halo Xbox live days this setup would have been king 😂
Isn't that amazing how far things have come? I have friends getting almost 1000Gbps in Denver and they pay what we pay for 200/200!

My Grandpa always stated how strange it was how our generation prefers to live on top of the hill or mountian, and his generation always lived in the low spots, out of the wind and close to water. He said no farms were ever built on top of the hill. Times have changed, in the beginning of the video when you stated the farm was built in a low spot it reminded me of that. Spray Foam has changed the world. God Bless
Love Ubiquiti equipment. I have setup 2 churches, my house, and working on a third church with them. So easy to configure, but so much there as well.
Couple tips, as a low voltage guy.
1. Adjust the frequencies the different links are using, each set on a different spectrum range, low for 1, high for the other.
2. Get a better firewall/router, I'd move it to the house vs at the pump house.
3. Cable Matters patch panels, keystones, nave point racks are all great cost effective equipment for data cabling.
4. For a NAS, Raid is what you need for redundancy.
We've done a nanobeam link across a international airport (slow, but it worked). And saturated a pair of beams with 24 cameras, through a tree, it sorta worked 😀.

Appreciate it! I would move the router to a house but that is the beginning of the network as the fiber ends at that pump house. I haven't figured out a different way to setup a dhcp down stream. Is that possible?

@@WelkerFarms DHCP does not need to be "at the beginning" (that's not really a thing in networks anyway, oversimplifying a bit but location only really matters for latency). You can just set up the router in your house and manage the network from there including setting up the DHCP (ubiquiti has nice options, but your old Synology would work the same). You will just need to make sure you give the proper IP addresses to the Airfibers from the pump house to yours so that the initial link from the pump house to your router works. From that point everything to the yard/etc is the same.
@@teno2tube I think my original reasoning was to keep all the devices downstream the router so they would be protected by the firewall. But if that isn't an issue I would love to move it to my home. For network management purposes I have thought about a Ubiquiti console. Would be great to have access to all the unifi and PtP devices without having to run the software on a pc.
@@WelkerFarms That Synology router you have isn't terrible. You won't be able to manage the PtP stuff from the Unifi Network app, kind of annoying - just your AP's and gateway. You need to setup UISP for the PtP stuff, maybe you already know this though!
But yeah, you could move the router from the pump house to your house but imo it will complicate managing the ptp links before the router for you. Theres nothing really wrong with how you have it now.
@@WelkerFarms You'll still have the router in your house "in front" of everything that your family is using as all the internet traffic goes through it, so that would still be covered (for the safety of the airfibers/etc anyway the most crucial thing is to keep the auto-updating on so you don't miss security patches). The Ubiquiti routers like their dream machines are nice if a bit expensive, but if you are not trying to also integrate their security cameras and wifi access points into single maintenance interface then it's also really not needed as a first step, you can still upgrade down the road and work with the Synology router for now.

Congrats on getting that network set up and working 👍 A little over 2 years ago, our local electric coop began supplying it’s customers with fiber and I was able to go from super slow AT&T 24mbps to 1gbps Fiber. It’s been so awesome having blazing fast, reliable internet that actually costs LESS than I was paying for snail-slow unreliable AT&T.
As much as we don’t like change, some of the changes are a real help.
One thing I would recommend is to buy a few UPS so that if you lose power at one location, it doesn't take the downstream system down. I love my Ubiquiti system!
If you aren't already doing so, I'd recommend running multiple unique IP subnets (segments) per household. Stretching a single L2 segment across multiple long range connections can lead to performance issues that are very hard to diagnose and troubleshoot.
If you have any questions, I'm an IT infrastructure engineer.
Been using a lot of Ubiquiti gear for many years, mostly UniFi equipment and worth the investment. The AirFiber 60GHZ and nano beams are awesome and exactly the right application here. Since you have so little competition for those the frequencies they use you are going to see great speeds. Make sure you go back and add a ethernet surge protector (ETH-SP-G2), keep the air fibers if hit by lightning from frying everything else in the house, pump house, shop.
I suggest in both you and legs arms homes run 1 AP per floor, you can get away with one for the whole home. However, when you add more devices speeds per device drop off fast. Also consider an outdoor AP if you want more coverage outside the building for cameras, etc. The metal roof and spray foam will definitely affect the overall coverage in the yard. Friends house was that way, 20 feet away from his house the signal dropped to unusable, now have a UAP-AC-M outside and his remote cameras are happy.
I have designed and deployed Ubiquiti equipment at several RV parks and wouldn't even think of using anything else! I only use the AP's in my house and a Nanostation in my RV. I like your set up, great job!!

@@WelkerFarms From what I've seen in previous videos, you are doing it right. The only thing diffrent i would have done is put in a fibre line when you did the water line. Other than that bang-up job.
@@Lineman0052 I looked into laying fiber but we couldn't figure out how to do it with that pipe layer we had without damaging the fiber line. Really wish we had that as fiber is future proof! Appreciate the thumbs up, I'm always learning. So far the NAS is working like a champ and the network is more than enough to handle all the traffic.

Nick - I've met several people who work in IT who would have been severely challenged to do what you did in a couple afternoons!!! Having to "tinker" some is part of the recipe, it's never as cut and dried as it seems it should be. The difference between someone who has "the knack" and someone who doesn't is the ability to "tinker" and get it to work!!!! Way to go!!!!

I was a linesman in Australia for a lot of years and used a similar rig as you guys have. We would lift the pole with the winch rope using the jaws to control the pole movement only. Arrrr brings back memories. 😁

Nick is a good tech guy it seems. I used to work as a network engineer and NIck on top of it. Knows his stuff. Most people struggle with this sort of network tech.
Starlink is an amazing option for those who can't get access to fiber in rural areas, upgraded my parents farm to that last summer and it's amazing. Not quite as good as Fiber but if you're other option is bad cell towers, Starlink is totally worth it. Any reliable high speed internet these days is really useful. Awesome video though and cool to see how you've setup your whole farm using the system. Gives me some ideas for our family farm beside trenching in Cat6 cable underground between building!

I retired from a electric company, and we had trucks with those claws on the digger trucks they are not made to pickup poles they used to steady the poles as you set them in the hole, the lifting is done with the winch on the truck. Keep up the good work, John.

Great upgrade Nick. I just worked with ubiquiti equipment at work today and here you are using them on the farm. I agree they make setup easy on most of their equipment. I used some wired switch's for an ad hoc network in a campus setting but their wireless is really good. Nice Job and thanks for sharing. I had to edit I forgot to answer your pinned question. We have cable internet here at home. Just did a speed test 505mbps down and 20 up. The provider puts an emphasis on download I think. I was very impressed with your speeds for what you are provided and am jealous of your upload speeds. Good thing I don't have a TH-cam channel. LOL Cheers

Great work. In Ireland most homes have access to up to 1gb of fibre to their home. Our 500mb BB with phone costs 64 euro pet month.

I have had a full Ubiquiti set up at my house for the last 4 years and it is amazing. I have everything run over POE through a dream machine SE. You will love the cameras and the ability to drop routers wherever you want without needing power. And the bridges are excellent for getting high speeds where you don’t want to run wires. Enjoy!

Hey Nick, I absolutely loved this video! I did the same thing this year around our farm adding internet to the shop from the house using Nanobeam. Also hooked up a bunch of UniFi cameras and access points around the house and yard. Went with UniFi dream machine pro, 24 port POE switch, and UniFi NVR. absolutely love their stuff. I am a nerd just like you, watched a bunch of TH-cam videos on how to get it done myself. Probably spent way to much on tools and equipment but it was worth it. I am running Starlink as it is the best we can get in our area of SW Sask. 👍🏻👍🏻

Great signal. Worked with ubiquiti gear for years. You shouldnt have to worry about the af60s interfering with the nanobeams they are on the 60ghz spectrum vs 2.4ghz or 5ghz with the nanobeams. You might just notice some performance drop off during heavy weather on the 60s called rain fade
Haven't had to mess with AirFiber, but I do have a full unifi stack in my network cabinet. A little fine tuning of my pfSense firewall and I consistently hit 550/20 for a 500/10 price. Good job, simple enough, and it works for you folks.

Congratulations on the new equipment. Nick, when you are excited about something new, you talk almost as fast as an auctioneer. I feel your excitement as I just replaced our old modem router to a new one and our speeds went 100mbps faster. Our wifi also works in the driveway and patio.

The technology that impressed me here is how that ladder stayed up against the new pole without twisting sideways when you climbed it! Must have been the feet of it on the truck bed. The rest looks great and makes sense for the most part! Thank you! Oh, but where does Starlink come in? I missed that part.
Great description of you internet link! very interesting network. One thing, having various poles sticking up into the air does create some risks. LOE (Lightning over ethernet) is less that desirable for networks. (ask me how I know). Grounds and transient suppressors are important. You are doing great so I'm just suggesting.

I hope your frquency does'nt get interference from the cell carriers, or your system does'nt cause the carriers interference. of course it depends on the frq. But I have seen that be a issue. Also if you ever have a wind issue between poe 1 and 2, consider a guide wire on the pole at the well house for stability. And yes it can be difficult getting the path in. I have done many microwave systems back in the day. Kind of miss it sometimes. Goo Luck.I really enjoy the channel

When We built a farm shop 25 years ago I connected with real 62.5 mm fiber to house office. It was 800' between the computers. Duplex Fiber is one 10 gigabite out and one in. I just had a 1" PVC conduit. Then a fishing line to pull the fiber. A pci computer card to ST fiber end.

i have dsl which works fine for me, my niece who lives here recently got herself a gaming computer so she got her own line which is fiber. was just easier for me to keep the setup i had.
