I apalogize for the clicking noise. That photoguy appeared next to me right when the display started. It`s really annoying. Hope you still enjoy the video.

The secret is to keep a something like a golf club or a baseball bat in your kit to shoo them away.

No sweat! I figure it was either a photographer taking a million pictures, or Robert Shaw reliving his ‘tacka-tacka-tacka’ sound effects from ‘The Battle of Britain’

This must be the most energetic display of a Hurricane that I´ve seen to date. Interesting and unusual scheme, and great footage.

I agree. Nice to see one being put through its paces. I think the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, with their duty to look after their Hurricanes for the nation, have a much more sedate routine.

When I was child, one of my father's friends used to tell me about flying Hurricanes in Burma during World War 2. He flew the Mark 2A with twelve Brownings, instead of the usual eight. He said they preferred not to fire the guns while climbing because, if their airspeed was too low, the recoil could stall the aircraft.

The Hurricane is so special in many ways. Ventral radiator, wide-track undercarriage, wings that have almost no dihedral, and a fuselage held together by a myriad of small connecting parts which essenciallly drive restorators crazy

Now we can all marvel at these wonderful works of art that are WW2 fighters and bombers, in any country and from any country.

Looks great in silver, really catches the movement of the ship in the air & light, much more impressive for air displaying than in its WW2 fighting colours.

The workhorse during the Battle of Britain, even though the Spitfire got all the attention. Eight out of ten fighter aircraft during the battle were Hurricanes. The spitfires usually took on the bomber escorts, while the hurricanes shot down the bombers.

It was a great aircraft that gave superb service, but it was withdrawn from the front line everywhere but the Far East by 1943 for very good reasons. It had long reached the end of its development potential. In the Far East it came off badly against Japanese Zero fighters. I knew three Hurricane pilots. One of them (an ace with 28 'kills' ) used to fly the parachute aircraft I jumped a few times in his later years. There was a very sad Hurricane display accident in the UK not that many years ago, and I think that tragedy, and others (not only Shoreham), that has dictated a more sober approach to display flying in the UK. That and preservation reasons is why they are not thrown around the sky so much these days. They are getting on for 80 years old after all.

Judging from the many stories of British/Polish WWII pilots I have heard and read, the Hurricane was a much better hunter/killer than the spitfire.

    • @robw7676
      @robw7676 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The Hurricane is a superior gun platform to the Spitfire, the guns are better spaced to deliver concentrated fire over a more varied range, and it is more stable. It can also out-turn and roll faster than pretty much every other WW2 fighter & could take a lot of damage. In a turning dogfight, it could get on a 109's tail even faster than a Spitfire. The Polish 303 squadron were all veterans of the invasions of Poland and France - a naturally selected elite. They were aggressive and wanted to attack, and the Hurricane was very good at it - they were used to having inferior planes and were delighted with it.
The Hurricane lacked the high altitude performance of the 109. It had a lower top speed and was slower to accelerate, climb and dive. 109s were 10-30mph faster depending on altitude, and could just run away from the Hurricane, that is its major shortcoming.
The Spitfire is beautiful and a lot "hotter" in terms of speed & climb, other than the period where the FW190 held the upper hand over the Mk V, the Spitfire could match or exceed most aspects of performance over the German fighters, plus is was made throughout the war, and new variants kept coming out that improved it. That's why it is such an icon.
People forget though, that the Hawker Typhoon, which is effectively an ambitious evolution of the Hurricane, was already at the flying prototype stage before the Battle of Britain, and despite some teething troubles, it was the Typhoon which stopped the low level incursions of the FW190s into Britain, it was the only fighter faster that the 190 at low level at the time.
The Tempest was the evolution of the Typhoon and was probably the best all-round piston engined fighter of the war.
In evolutionary terms, the Typhoon is an enlarged Hurricane with a 2000hp engine and a new forward fuselage, whilst the Tempest is a Typhoon with a thin Spitfire style wing and P51 style laminar flow aerofoils.

This Hurricano looks powerful judging by its climb rate. The truth is, late Hurricanes had heavy cannon and bombs to lift, so the profited from much more powerful Merlin engines than in the beginning, although they were much slower than contemporary Spitfires
