The best band for 60's / 70's nostalgia.
As a black boy from an predominantly soul music listening environment I became a solid fan of Gary Puckett and The Union Gap at 8 years old in 1973 and still a fan.
I am very surprised they don't have their booking in the music HoF because their music stood a test of time and for a person growing up in the 70's for that moment they place me in a much better more innocent USA.....

In 1968 when this song came out the Ed Sullivan Show was the premiere television show to be on but Mr. Sullivan was also known as a stickler for family friendly so anything suggestive was frowned upon. He asked that Gary Sing different words deemed too suggestive so "the facts of life" was turned into "the way of life" and Gary gladly obliged because he knew he and the Union Gaps performance would be watched by millions and millions of people and this became one of their biggest hits peaking at #2 on the charts!!
Gary's vocals are unbelievable for a live performance and I doubt there are many that could sing as he does today!!!

I grew up in Yakima Wa. where Gary was from. Union Gap was right down the road, and that’s where the bands name came from. I just turned 70 so I was 14 when these songs came out. Gary and the band used to play at a local night club called the Downton back in those days.

He was a superstar. The group didn't last and he struggled making it on his own as a solo artist. It happens. When Gary Puckett and the Union Gap were firing on all cylinders they were huge. There were a lot of groups that were huge in that day. The music you heard on radio was much more eclectic. It started fragmenting into separate genres that were segregated by radio stations in the 1970s.

Every time I hear this song, It takes me back to my teenage years in the late 80's early 90's- my dad would drive me around on my paper route and we'd listen to 60's music, then go to Mcdonald's for breakfast before he had to head off to work, and I off to school. I can still feel the air conditioner running at full blast in our van in the 4am darkness- dad and I having some good father/son time. We spent a lot of time driving around going places when I was growing up....used to listen to songs like this on AM radio before "oldies" stations took hold.

This man’s voice is the one I’d ask for if I could “wish” a voice. Powerful and beautiful at once.

I remember being 12, and dancing with my real mom in the Bar, what I would give to do that again and show her what a man I had become!!!!

Gary Puckett and the union gap should be inducted in the hall of fame

If there was ever a voice that would send instant chills with his impassioned strength, it's Gary Puckett's.

What a time to be alive when some of the best music ever was being produced in the 60s and 70s. None of the music today even comes close. Sadly for a lot of young people they will never experience what real music is like.

How lucky we were to have grown up in this fabulous era where these masterpiece songs and groups presented themselves to us like we deserved them. We didn't, really, but no one was going to tell us that. What a gift and I will never think otherwise. God bless them all!

I was born in 1968 but thanks to extinct rock magazines I learned of real artists like Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. It was also the time of my mother's youth, so curiosity put me to inquire about 60s' Rock; my deepest admiration for the best of such music!!

Many nights as a teenager, I studied to The Grassroots & Gary Puckett and the Gap. Put both albums on and fell asleep after hours of study. Years later, I lived in Yakima, WA. It's a high desert valley, with two GAPS. The western one is Selah Gap. It takes you to Seattle. The eastern one is Union Gap. It takes you through the 11M acre Yakima reservation and towards the Columbia River. Just a bit of trivia for your day.

Saw Gary recently in a concert of 60s Gold at Leeds Grand Theatre in UK. He came over especially to do the tour and he is now 80! It was a fabulous show with original 60s groups and myself and friends relived our youth!
