  • Rolls-Royce is perhaps one of the most enduring names in British history, it's also perhaps the name that the world aspires to when it thinks of living the luxury lifestyle. Over the years Rolls-Royce, like pretty much every British car company, has been owned by several different people, and come close to exiting stage left multiple times, but today, with BMW in charge and based at Goodwood, it's thriving.
But which are the best cars that Charles Rolls and Henry Royce's company has ever made? Picking the best is tricky, but with hits like the various Phantoms, Silver Ghost, Corniche and even the modern Cullinan there's plenty to work with. Here's the ones we remember most fondly.
Which do you think are RR's greatest cars?

The Silver Shadow should not be overlooked. It took the company from the 1930s to the modern era in a single step, then kept them alive until the Volkswagen takeover. In importance I would argue it to be second only to the 40/50hp, which cemented the brand’s reputation.

The Silver Shadow and its rare Bentley T-Series stablemate are exceptional motorcars. Designed by the genius automotive artisan Sir John Blatchley, they were a modernising leap, but still feature Rolls-Royce tradition, restraint and lineage. Prices for a fine example are steadily wafting towards eye-watering.

I agree. I run a car dealership and one of my rivals stole a rolls Royce from me. I had to call in the authorities to recover and the car looked horrible aesthetically but held pretty well. The thief was grounded for a day and received no ice cream after dinner.

I was told that while Rolls was gearing up to produce this gearbox they took the American one apart and discovered some rough casting on some of the parts. Since this was not up to their standards they cleaned it up to a Rolls-Royce standard, whereupon the gearbox stopped working! I think that is probably an apocryphal story, but given the sometimes strange engineering of the Cloud 3, (like having to remove part of the front body work to get at the sparkplugs), maybe not!

I had a 64 Cloud 3. Other than the fact that I should have received a personally signed Christmas card from The Sultan of Brunei, given it's outrageous thirst for dead dinosaurs, it was a wonderful car. A 500 mile trip was just nothing to think about and it had some wondrous quirks. I bought it on a whim, having sold a boat for exactly the asking price and while I sold it for a handsome profit 19 months later, when I decided that the front seat passenger had a likelihood of becoming a permanent fixture in my life, I never regretted a minute of owning it.

What, now SC III Park Ward Chinese Eye in here, lol. Such a design. More seriously, the SC III Flying Spur bodies did have a lithe, almost graceful look, and with a proper front end pulled it off better than David Brown's Lagonda Rapide of the same period - though of course the latter was a proper sporting sedan which could handily steal the SC's lunch money and more besides.

Because so many were made and sold, the second hand market blossomed with them to become wedding cars. More people began their new married life in one than anything else ! Surely millions have travelled in one that way. What other car can say that ?

The problem about the Cullinan is not that it is an SUV. The problem is its underwhelming design. The 60.000 £ Velar has more Rolls-Royce-ishness than this boxy, unbalanced thing.

"There are economic reasons Rolls has survived this long."
There are zero economic reasons Rolls-Royce has survived this long. They haven't.
    -----wikipedia-----[my comments]------------------------------------------------
Survived this long... Do you mean :
    - Rolls-Royce Limited, a British manufacturer of cars and later aero engine, founded in 1906, now defunct?
    - Rolls-Royce Motors, incorporated in 1973
    - - Bought by Vickers [meaning, didn't survive AGAIN] in 1980. [The survived for 7 whole years. Wow.]
    - - A subsidiary of Volkswagen Group [meaning, didn't survive AGAIN] from 1998 to 2002. [4. Years. Hella wow survival rate.]
    - Rolls-Royce Motor Car, incorporated in 1998, a subsidiary of BMW Group?
BMW acquired the rights to the Rolls-Royce trademark for use on automobiles and launce a new Rolls-Royce company.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The current Rolls-Royce is not a survival of Rolls-Royce; liquidated 1971.
The current Rolls-Royce is BWM with a sticker on it. The thing that survived is the sticker. It is Rolls-Royce exactly as much as Sargon of Akkad is Sargon of Akkad (no offence, Carl).

Interesting, but I like Bentley better, not that I would ever buy either. Just too! much snobbery involved with these over priced cars. Just give me a beats walking and I'll be happy.

Interesting rewriting of history. Surprised you don't claim Skoda and Toyota as being British as well. Laughable and sad piece of inferiority complex propaganda.

You taunt the fact that Rolls died in a plain crash as some sort of achievement. Have some decency and slow down your narration, show some respect.
