  • The Masked Avenger Streamer pattern is a highly productive pattern that has been around for several years now. This pattern could be considered the distant relative to the Avenger, only real difference is a deer hair head and collar in place of the fish mask. In this video I detail the tying sequence for this highly effective streamer pattern that is also a lot of fun to fish. I also discuss some of the finer nuances of weight additions and how the difference in how you trim the deer hair can relate to the action of the fly.

    Rich, tied some of these up right when you dropped the video. Been absolutely hammering LMB with them in Iowa! What a fantastic pattern! Thanks for sharing it!

    Nice job Rich- definitely going to add a few of these to the box. If you were going to do these in a 2 hook 1 shank set up
    , would you add a 35mm shank in the middle and just do the fox on the front hook and shank and leave the last hook with just the tails/chenille? Just curious how that program would work.

    • @RichStrolis
      @RichStrolis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Podobed in all honesty, a third section is really unnecessary as you can upsize the hooks and use larger rooster feathers to make a larger profile

    Hi Rich, awesome fly, thanks for sharing. So if you were using schlappen in place of the sparkle brush / UV chenille, you would tie in the schlappen by the tips and palmer it forward? Thanks, Ethan

    • @RichStrolis
      @RichStrolis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, if that’s how you would like to use it. Or in place of the American rooster in the tail.

    What diameter wire would you use for larger fish in the 15-25lb range? Wanted to tie some of these for golden dorado trip
    Excellent vid, good to see how you finished the deer hair head, I always get in a serious mess with my whip finish trapping hairs

      Cris Worledge for Dorado I’d move up to 49 strand beadalon and completely different hooks. I’ve sent this exact pattern to customers chasing Dorado in the last year and a TMC 600 SP, Gamakatsu SL12, Owner Aki or Ahrex blue water 270-280 would be the hook of choice with a big game shank on the back end

    • @crisworledge4289
      @crisworledge4289 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome thanks, how did they do on dorado? I like the extra movement and they look so much lighter weight for casting compared to more widely used buck tail deciever type patterns

    • @RichStrolis
      @RichStrolis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cris Worledge they did well, but to be honest the bulked up masked avengers, and synthetic headed versions actually hold up much better to the abuse those fish put on flies. Deer hair headed flies with toothy fish can often get chewed up

    Other than your personal preference, is there any benefit to using fox as opposed to marabou or craft fur? Better movement/sheds water better/etc? Thanks!

    • @RichStrolis
      @RichStrolis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shaun Baggitt comparing the three materials is like comparing apples to oranges. Fox fur holds more volume and body compared to the other two which will become much more slender when wet

      @@RichStrolis Thanks for the knowledge. I've never worked with fox before, which is why i asked. I tie snake flies for stripers, which are almost identical to this pattern. I've been looking for a material, brush or otherwise, that won't collapse as much when wet. Thanks again.

    Is arctic fox fur and fox tail fur interchangeable in your pattern? The fox fur I have access to is much finer than tail fur but the tail fur is longer.

    • @RichStrolis
      @RichStrolis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fur would be a good alternative for smaller versions but it is much softer. In this case, I still prefer to use tail hair as it has more body to it. Best place to find tails is waters west.

      @@RichStrolis Thank you for the reply. I enjoy learning from your videos. On another note. I am from Maine and fish for stripers. You made a comment on your video of the Articulated Baitfish that if you were making the fly for salt water you would use a single hook and a spine for the rear. Why not 2 hooks? Looks to be a great fly for stripers. I plan to tie some for this spring/summer.

      @@karljohnson3538 personally don’t think you need the second hook for strippers as they inhale their prey

      @@RichStrolis Thank you. I bought some fox tail fur that was pretty twisted in a spiral shape. I washed it with some of the wife's hair conditioner, combed it and dried with a hair drier. It came out straight and much softer.
