After combating Marek’s disease & it’s devastating effect on our chicken flock the past 4 months (not through it by any means), I decided we’d better invest in some sort of meat bird should Mareks end up taking out our entire chicken flock.
So we purchased 3 Royal Palms and 3 Narragansett turkey’s two weeks ago.
As I’m searching TH-cam to find out more info on the two breeds I’ve purchased, I came across your sweet one.
Reminding me how we have invested in more of a rare breed kind of got me excited about our little turkey friends.
After suffering through this Mareks madness, I can honestly say that from a broken heart perspective, I don’t want to fall I love with these little turkeys but I definitely want to do right by them and that is why we started with 6.
While Turkeys cannot contract Marek’s disease themselves, we are aware to keep them separated from our infected chickens so there isn’t an exchange of dander which might also aid in the black head disease you mentioned.
We’ve worked so hard keeping chicken separated to slow the spread of Mareks down and possibly help build their immune systems, I’ll admit, I’m not one who’s willing to risk much as the result has nearly killed us in the work exchange.
With all that said, I LOVED your excitement of enjoying the turkeys more than the chickens. I Crave that excitement because I’ve cried nearly every single day for the past 4 months and especially when another young chicken shows symptoms it’s a mental beating every time that we have failed at raising chickens and at keeping them safe.
Yet, I know those thoughts are lies and so, I Want to enjoy our turkeys and laugh again .
Your video I’m responding to is a year old and I can imagine you’ve learned a lot in the past year.
Is there anything specific you could offer with all I’ve disclosed, that could help bring awareness to specifics that you know of now?
🙂 thank you for this video though. It has definitely gotten me a bit excited about our RP’s

this would be a good turkey for couples for holidays. I know it's not a "meat" bird but it's interesting. A lot of the smaller birds are always overlooked. The age of buying the huges bird isn't really the thing as much. If they have a good temperment work on pasture. And the line gets production fixed. It could be a huge thing.

Do you have foxes where you are at? Wondering how turkeys fare against these. Thank you for the informational video.

We do, but we have never seen one here in 4 years. I believe a fox could take down a turkey, however, it is a big bird obviously with capable defenses and I think the fox would prefer easier prey.

I have 6 babies with my 30 chickens (chicks). I am wondering, do turkey hens need nexting boxes? If so, how big? Do turkey hens share nexting boxes with other hens?

Torn if I should do blue slate or these on Venus soon…so far turkeys are my favorite bird to have since I have lots of time to bond with them it really is easy after having a great area for them as babies seems a priority unless getting some weeks old then they are pretty easy to deal with..they sure like to eat. I’m uploading my birds on TH-cam now…

Do you know the life expectancy of the Royal Palm? I keep seeing 2-3 years.

How are the eggs? Also, does trimming wings hurt their ability to fly away from predators? I would think so

The eggs are good, taste just like chicken eggs, but a little firmer for over easy. We prefer them scrambled. And for the wings, yeah, potentially. Though there aren't any predators here that they need to escape from.

If the breed is rare, doesn’t that mean that the gene pool is small? How do you outcross to bring back genetic diversity?
