In David Downing’s 1994 book, A Dreamer of Pictures, Lou Reed is mentioned for stating that he considered the guitar playing on ‘Danger Bird’ to be the best he’d ever heard. Of the song, he said: “It makes me cry, it is the best I have heard in my life. The guy is a spectacular guitarist, those melodies are so marvellous, so calculated, constructed note to note… he must have killed to get those notes. It puts my hairs on end”.
I spoke to you shaggy after tonight's the night review, this is my favourite Neil album. I pointed out in my view his two best song's. Dangerbird and Cortez the killer superb,I don't think he ever bettered this album .Although ragged glory rust never sleeps and freedom are excellent as well. Your reviews have been through and well presented.👍
Zuma is my #1 so far - damn near perfect. Through My Sails doesn't do much for me. Will it remain there? Possibly. Great breakdown of the songs, Shaggy.
I think Cortez is genius, the way he plays with space and time and history. He does a similar thing with Pocahontas, you are never quite sure where you are and who is telling the story. What both songs share in common is the subtle protest angle, which is handled with such tact and diplomacy it is so f#&king clever. Both songs when I heard them made me want to find out what he was on about. Top stuff mister.
I really like this one, play it a lot and know well. I had a feeling I’d rank this high from the start. Danger bird and Cortez the obv standouts but the rest if great. Nice 34 mins and done.z going into the 3 spot right now just above ditch trilogy though only because I do like it when he cranks up the Horse. 1 everybody knows 2 after the gold rush 3 zuma 4 time fades away 5 on the beach 6 tonight’s the night 7 Harvest 8 self titled Starting to come out of the first peak period? Maybe. Has my top 5 already solidified… he does have one more run of albums I am very fond of. But we are a while away from that
9. Neil Young 8. Homegrown 7. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 6. Zuma 5. Harvest 4. On The Beach 3. After The Gold Rush 2. Tonight’s The Night 1. Time Fades Away
Bought it when it came out. Was popular in high school among the stoner crowd. Begins his electric phase to me.

Interesting. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Through My Sails. Although I agree that Stupid Girl and Drive Back are slightly weaker, still good though
