In 1978 a couple of friends of mine and I set out from England for a trip. We were still hippies then; indeed, maybe one of us still is. Some weeks later we found ourselves watching the sun set over the Red Sea whilst turning on the local Bedouin Arabs to this album which we took with us on cassette (can't remember any other stuff we took, but I still have this cassette, now scribbled with Arab writing. Probably had some Zappa with us too.). We lived in sleeping bags on the edge of the desert for a while, and used to sit smoking on these huge sand dunes, tens of feet high, beneath the palm trees in the middle of absolutely nowhere, and the whole sky would turn red, and darkness would come, the stars would twinkle above the water, and Neil would be singing Midnight on the Bay, and all, for an evening, would be well with the world.
@@theopinionatedhippie470 You might also like to know that I had only one deadline by which time I had to return to the UK. I had tickets for FZ's late show at the Hammersmith Odeon on the 17th & the show the following night on the 18th February 1979. Good enough reasons to come home, methinks. And indeed they were.
I did the Eurorail travel thing a couple summers in my twenties and both summers, one of the cassettes I brought with me was Neil. I have lots of memories of traveling late night on trains listening to Ragged Glory or Mirror Ball…
11. Long May You Run (it’s a nice album but I don’t have as much enthusiasm for it) 10. Deja Vu 9. Neil Young 8. Homegrown 7. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 6. Zuma 5. Harvest 4. On The Beach 3. After The Gold Rush 2. Tonight’s The Night 1. Time Fades Away
When I told you shaggy that zuma was my favourite Neil album. Midnight on the bay is an absolute masterpiece to me. Steve’s song I want to make love to you is great as well. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Are you familiar with Buffalo Springfield? Stills had some AMAZING songs with them (along with Neil obviously). I’m not familiar with Stills solo stuff. But I LOVE Stills’ “guardian angel” on this album
Man you need to hear Manassas by Stephen Stills from 72, loads better than the old rubbish on Stills /Young band album. Stills band back then could give any other group a run for their money. Check out the live performance of them at Beat Club in Germany 72.
The one thing that CSN&Y had in common (by coincidence) was that they were all raised by their mothers, in other words, little father input. So pertaining to Stills, his mom convinced him that he was far superior to others and I'd say that he is the better musician of the 4. Neil's mom did the same ego thing with Neil, so they were always clashing and meshing, but the 2 make great live guitar improvisations IMHO.
So this is the first album in this run I don’t own and never heard before. I’d debated on adding to my ranking as it’s a side project but figured what the hell, one of the points of this is to discover something new. So I gave it about 3 listens this week on streaming. And it easily my bottom so far: don’t like the Stills songs and if the 5 Neil only 2 really stand out to 1 everybody knows 2 after the gold rush 3 zuma 4 time fades away 5 on the beach 6 tonight’s the night 7 Harvest 8 self titled 9 long may you run

I do know Buffalo Springfield….forgot to mention them. Saw them on that surprisingly good tour about twelve years ago or so.
