So Xmas week brings American Stars and Bars, an album of two halves! I often wonder at this point was there almost too much material and not sure how to put it out? Hence all the shelved albums? This is one of those to me where stuff is thrown together and dunno if feels cohesive. Though I do love your concept theory! Country half is ok, I really like ,couple tracks. Second half he pulls the same trick as with Zuma by leaving the absolute banger until penultimate track. Although I do sometimes prefer the unplugged version we will get down the line. In my mind the weakest of this golden 70’s period 1 everybody knows 2 after the gold rush 3 zuma 4 time fades away 5 on the beach 6 tonight’s the night 7 Harvest 8 American stars and bars 9 self titled 10 long may you run

I do love this album man ,I agree Motorcycle mama just doesn't quite fit . I think David Briggs said to Neil that the live album Massey Hall should have been released instead of Harvest and I love that when he finally released it he kind of acknowledged it on his a sticker on the front cover . I know i have mentioned this before but you need to hear Stephen Stills Manassas album from 72, that's an album that doesn't get the love it truly deserves and its just brilliant from start to finish man .

After first seeing Neil perform a few of these songs acoustically and unaccompanied at the Cow Palace show in 1978 that was filmed for the Rust Never Sleeps movie, I was put off at first by some of the ornate production touches added to some of these songs on the album. But over time I've come to appreciate how they give the songs almost a sense of grandeur that lifts them up into something more. This is also another case where the final album configuration doesn't faithfully follow the sessions - if it had, "Lost In Space" and "Sail Away" would have been included in place of "Lotta Love" and "Look Out for My Love" - though it's measurably stronger in Neil's configuration. It has come to be my very favorite of all his albums and the one I return to the most often, and the closer "Four Strong Winds" - which actually originated with the Canadian folk duo Ian and Sylvia - is the most beautiful thing he's ever recorded.

I liked this album more than I expected (don’t let its ranking fool you). It’s so peaceful and positive, especially after all the previous turmoil. I’m really not a country guy in general but I LOVE Neil’s country. I gotta open my mind more to country that’s pre-80s. I can’t stand these modern country pop people 14. Long May You Run 13. I was only 14 when I attended the January 7th show and was a brand new Bob fan at the time. The tickets were tough to get but, my sister Kathy worked at John Wanamakers in Center City Philadelphia. They happened to have an Electric Factory Concerts ticket outlet on location. She was able to get me four tickets. I couldn't believe it. I remember being jolted by how different Bob's voice was but, it was loud and powerful and I quickly joined in and accepted the new version of Bob. The highlight was It's Alright Ma. It was riveting. I had never heard that song. I only had Greatest Hits Volumes One and Two and Nashville Skyline at the time. The smell of pot filled the air and the matches and lighters lit the place up before the encore. The album cover of Before the Flood was possibly taken in Philadelphia (I vaguely remember reading that somewhere). I would like to think that one of those matches was mine. Thanks for these great 1974 Bob reviews.

I like this Perfect Strangers better than the studio recording, there's an extra guitar line in the verses that they added live that's not in the original & Gillan adds a scream in the final verse; also Hard Lovin' Woman works better live w/ a little faster tempo than the studio recording; also worth It for Gillan's song intros which are full of one liners and/or drunken ramblings.

Styx were awesome from Equinox to maybe Pieces of 8 or Cornerstone. Agree with Boat on the River. The appeal for me was Tommy and JY killing it on guitar, DDY went kind of sappy. In '81 I saw Springsteen, goodbye Styx. I however still have their string of albums mentioned, on my music app.

Styx were so big in Cleveland/Akron back in the day and served as a primary part of the soundtrack of my awkward teenage years. There's a reason "Come Sail Away" was used in Freaks and Geeks. By 1983, though, Rush, Zep, Yes and U2 demanded more of my attention, but really enjoyed your dive into the river Styx.

Great analysis Hippie! This album has always been a favorite of mine too. I think you nailed it that it's a loose concept album. One point I'd make is possibly Neil was considering righting himself with the Lord ie "The Star of Bethlehem" but he continues on his rowdy ways when he concludes that "MAYBE the Star of Bethlehem wasn't a star at all.." It's a crucial point in the rising and falling action line of the story. Anyway, thank you spending the time analyzing this greatest of break up albums imho. I'm looking forward to your take on "Silver & Gold" anotherr favorite of mine especially songs like The Great Divide, Distant Camera, and Without Rings, they are really heavy songs. "On the carousel..."

I love the intimacy of it ,I am sure he never expected for that session to be released and I love how relaxed he is. It really made me smile during Long may you run when he name checks The Beach Boys and gets a laugh. Throughout his career he name checks people occasionally and when I started writing songs myself ,I did the same. Outside Now in 88 is the definitive version and Any Kind of Pain was the last good song Frank wrote. That being said, I'd probably still rank 88 in the lower half.

Bite the Bullet live was actually good fun .... look forward to next video .... Will to Love as the second song is weird but not as off putting as I expected. I find it almost equal to Homegrown, only very slightly better because it has some epic tracks. But man I LOVE “Florida.” 12. Long May You Run (it’s a nice album but I don’t have as much enthusiasm for it) 11. Deja Vu 10. Neil Young 9. Homegrown 8. Chrome Dreams 7. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 6. Zuma 5. Harvest 4. On The Beach 3. After The Gold Rush 2. Tonight’s The Night 1. Time Fades Away

Listening and loving this. Related/unrelated: DP is kind of my litmus test for BS… if you tell me you love rock/music, we’re going to talk a little purple. Just like if you tell me you love the dead, we’re talking about your favorite keyboardist right off the bat. Guides me on how much to invest in the conversation. If someone can talk purple, you know you can dig in for a good chat.
