  • In this series of videos we will be interviewing and being interviewed by various different industry professionals. This weeks podcast we had the pleasure of talking with Colin McDowell engineer and CEO of McDSP. Colin such an interesting character and that really shows in this interview. We lift the lid on the APB and Colin talks us through the signal chain. How it works and why it works so well. SX Pro have been gracious enough to issue us with a 10% coupon code that can be used up to October 31st. Information this below.
    10% Off Coupon Code: APB-10
    ✅ Buy McDSP APB ► sxpro.co.uk/se...
    1. Firstly please tell us about what the MCDSP APM is?
    2. Can you show us inside the APB and explain what the signal path is?
    3. How does it differ from let’s say UAD DSP plugins?
    4. How is it possible for a compressor, an EQ and saturation to all utilise the same components. How can each compressor sound different yet utilise the same components?
    5. Some viewers voiced their concerns of longevity of the APM system. What would happen if let's say a new thunderbolt connection came out. Is there a possibility to adjust the boxes connection?
    6. Will Windows compatibility be something you will introduce in the future?
    7. I had a dream one night you had built a MCDSP summing console that was bright green and included APB’s for each channel. Could this be possible?
    8. A major selling point I see with the APB is that you buy 1 box for the price of a good EQ or compressor and you have an ever growing expansion of tools to use on it. Do you get all the current plugins and future plugins free with it?
    9. Are there any new plugins in the pipeline you can talk about?
    10. Some comments on our APB review expressed that it is crazy expensive at £4000 for the APB-8 and £6000 for the APB-16. Would a 2 or 4 channel be something you’d consider. Or an interface with the APB built into it?
    11. Any final words you’d like to say on the APB?

    Let's just come out and say it; the APB is a revolutionary piece of gear! Colin is a genius!

      And completely humble and down to earth. I've worked with dozens of engineers and scientists for over two decades and encountered maybe two or three TRUE geniuses. While driven, they have all been super humble and none of them recognize themselves as geniuses. Similarly, I see myself as having a Guinness.

    FIRE interview!!!! Thank you!!! Hope McDSP comes up with a channel strip for this box

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would like a channel strip with EQ and compression, so you are only using 1 mcdsp channel per. Rather than 2 separate plugins taking up 2 channels of the mcdsp.

    So the APB is a combo of Analog processing with some digital (analog modelling) as well?? is what I understood when Collin said they could model temperature for repeatable analog experience

    Love this interview so much. Only weeks away from getting my APB. Hyped for the Big C eq & compressor pair he mentioned.

      The tape emulation has been added to the lineup now. Which you'll love. The low end bump on it is incredible.

    The EQ is digital and using the saturation blacks for each band in the analogue board... it kind of takes the best of both worlds

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio

      I would agree. Like Colin said it's relatively easy to create a good EQ in the box. But it loses that mojo of the analogue aspect of it. This really solves that aspect of it.

    Is that Audio Animals rack unit new to your right?

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      No the 4 racks are all what have always been in here. I did have a switch around recently and moved some units around. The rack to my left now has the Goly Porter Grinder in with the Buzz req and spl Iron. The Porter Grinder and Buzz REQ are usually out of shot which may be why that rack may look new.

  • @TheSakuraGumiLTD
    @TheSakuraGumiLTD ปีที่แล้ว

    My question has been the same as yours with it and that is how they can make new units with the same board... they just released a new one recently and have said they will release more in the future... it's very cleaver in comparison to any other analogue out there.
    Really interested to see what they make and the next device like this... or if another company tries this??

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the reason this is a unique and no other company has attempted it. Is because of how complex it is. You'd have to be incredibly clever to build this and get it all working the way Colin has.

  • @skykai7813
    @skykai7813 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're the man Paul!! Finally someone asks Colin about Windows support for the APB, it's a question that never got asked in any interviews I've seen from him and always seems avoided so thankyou for bringing it up. Unfortunate to hear they have to pay a bunch of money again to have it windows certified and it sounded like that is one of the major reasons holding them back from supporting Windows. I don't know where this leaves us Windows peeps, since he didn't really say it was coming soon or anything, mainly just said it's a possibility. Bummer :(

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      And we did get an answer that we all kind of went ahh OK that makes perfect sense and can understand. Whereas previously we thought well I know I did that it was just easier to code for a single platform and ensure it's working there first and windows is an afterthought. I guess it's a case of weighting up how much it cost vs how much it'll add to sales. He didn't say no though.

    • @skykai7813
      @skykai7813 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AudioAnimalsStudio Agreed! it was nice to finally get a real answer so I'm super glad you asked him. I also thought it was more of a coding issue so it's nice to finally know the real reason. The cost to get the product to be Windows certified must be bonkers for it to be holding them back from adding windows support lol. I guess the good news is it's better for it to be a problem with certifying the product than a coding problem. So there is still some hope... just no timeline sadly. I know for a fact there are tons of Windows users who want to buy this thing, so I feel strongly they'd easily make their money back on the investment.

    Awesome!

  • @TheSakuraGumiLTD
    @TheSakuraGumiLTD ปีที่แล้ว

    Surely the latency you was asking was the conversion not the analogue.
    If they made this with analogue ins and out you could do tracking but these devices in it are really designed for mixing anyway.
    It would be super cool to see a console made this way one day so you could have analogue that's very easily recallable in an instant as soon as you load a project

    • @TheSakuraGumiLTD
      @TheSakuraGumiLTD ปีที่แล้ว

      They could make a HDX version and have it become and in-between for the HDX pcie card and the conversion

    • @TheSakuraGumiLTD
      @TheSakuraGumiLTD ปีที่แล้ว

      They could do that with Dante and Madi etc that way.... would be a great thing if that was done in the future

    • @McDSPTV
      @McDSPTV ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just to clear things up a bit for you, most of the latency is the APB 'waiting' for all buffers to be made available from a given DAW. In other words, the latency is not a limitation of the hardware itself, and as Colin hinted in the video, our team is working hard to allow the APB to operate with lower latency settings ... perhaps even one day we could support realtime tracking - no analog I/O's needed! Let us know if you have any questions!!

  • @YMIR
    @YMIR ปีที่แล้ว

    If they manage to get the latency down, i can almost imagine a channel strip plugin! I know you could create your own chain with a few of their plugins, but would be super cool for recording on the way in!

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would be awesome, 16 channels of eq and compression in 1 APB 16 rather than 8 using 2 separate plugins.

    • @YMIR
      @YMIR ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AudioAnimalsStudio Exactly, man that would be perfect, Literally insane amount of possibility with the APB!

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @YMIR 5x APB 16 = 80 channel strips of eq compression and saturation. I'm going to email Colin. There must be a reason he hasn't already done this. Maybe it isn't possible due to the architecture of the chain. If anyone could make it possible it's Colin.
