I'm giving props to the Cavies for showing sportmanship for their Illinoisan brethren! It's like a proud father watching their son return to victory lane with the big kids once again.
They made 2008 finals their own...from entry to exit, as an audience member, I was 100% bought into their performance. Never experienced a drum Corp show so well performed that I reacted as much as I did throughout the performance rather than at specific vignettes ( a battery feature, a guard feature, drill move, horn line feature, soloist, etc.). I was in it from pre-show to “I am Spartacus! and the traditional death of a Phantom drum major. The crowd did indeed “go wild” at the end of the show, that was the loudest reaction from a DCI crowd I ever heard at the time, especially at an outdoor venue (where DCI sounds best, in my opinion). I really appreciate you for posting this glorious moment in Phantom Regiment history.
I'm not going to let you say that outdoor is the best, otherwise phantom wouldn't have sounded so damn good at the finals in 2010 when they started the show playing to the backfield.
I heard it in the Georgia dome, and I heard it at the finals. That ethereal echo followed by the slap in the face when they turned around was much better in a dome stadium.
The way the members of Phantom reacted looked a lot like how the members of Crown winning in 2013 and Bluecoats in 2016. I was there on finals for Crown's announcement...but I think the crowd was louder for Phantom then it was for Crown or Bluecoats. First time wins are very special to everyone.
That was literally the release of 4 decades of pent up phan phrustration, remedying the annoyance of having to share it with Blue Devils in '96 and losing to the Devils in '82 with a Spartacus show plus the squeaker upsets to the Devils of 77 and 79.
That was an amazing night. The top three corps had shows that would've won in any other year, absolutely exceptional and engaging performances. I have never felt a crowd so vibrant and enraptured - not at any rock concert or DCI show, as I did during Phantom's performance. They deserved to win, and I would never take that away from them...but I felt like that unheard of .025 points was life insurance for the judges :)
I heard this from outside the stadium...heading past the basketball building to our busses parked over in the lot to the left of the field from the crowd's POV. It was INSANE. Those Phantom horn players at 2:57...say it all.
I was in the crowd. I just aged out of BD the year before. I had my corps jacket, ring and everything on. I knew Phantom was going to win after the semifinals competition and I was very happy for them. The Drumline is what got them to first because they won drums that year. Realistically phantom's show was a better show. It is what it is
being in the winning band and knowing it’s a close race before hand, when you hear them call second and it’s not your band, you die of joy. a week ago, my band got state. we broke another band’s win streak of eight years. “and in second place, with a score of 81.70, eight one point seven zero, the coweta high school marching band!” oh, my goodness. we were so dang excited. we started crying and celebrating before we even heard our name. we actually did it! we freaking beat coweta! “and finally, in first place, with a score of 81.90, eight one point nine zero…” and that’s all i could hear. everyone already knew we had won, we didn’t need to hear them say it. we tried to hush up just for a second but wow, it was so much. we won state! i’m so happy. we may have only beat them by .2 points, but we still did it! the point gap was even smaller here. and for 5A bands, 80s are pretty dang good. obviously it’s not dci level, but one day i hope i’ll be able to march in dci. that would be amazing. we also pulled the same thing as phantom did here (obviously on a smaller scale because, well, it’s high school marching band, not dci lol), we won 1 caption award. coweta won 2. we still beat them. ahhhhh. so happy.
Just to throw some cold water on this celebration--how many 10's did Phantom get with another corps still to perform? AND the loudest ovation ever in DCI history has to have been in 1992 when Star was announced third.
I don’t know how official these sound power titles are, but holy crap 1992. First, the most fantastical crowd moment at the end of Velvet Knights, then the crowd going absolutely nuts (like in this vid) when Star was announced as Third, then AGAIN when The Cadets were announced to be Second, and once more when Cavaliers were confirmed First. It was an absolutely magical night.
having taken 2nd myself, i know the pain. but i have to admit, even as a bd alum, i'm happy regiment won it on their own with a deserving show.

Alternative title: Blue Devils' villain origin story
You'll need to go back a few decades for that. ;)

Nope, outdoor is still best for all other scenarios.
One of the best years ever. I loved every single show in the top four. That's rare these days.
2014, 2016 were also stacked
Same as 19 but that's what I think

And don’t forget 89 being stolen by malaguena who forced vanguard to do the same exact show a second year in a row
I aged out of Blue Stars that year. I felt the force of that roar from the field.

Just seeing the looks on Regiments faces when BD was announced in 2nd place gives me chills.
I'm not crying hysterically....you're crying hysterically. Well done Phantom Regiment. This show still gives me chills.
That crowd was extremely loud. Very tough competition and well deserved win 🏆

Our band lost by 1 point (92.1 to 93.2) to our freindly/rival band and it sucked cause we knew it once they won all the class awards.
@@Dsol777 dang, that’s pretty close too. Way higher scores than we can even dream of though, 90s are insane! Good job.
u must be from piedmont :)
cool to run into u on youtube, i was at oba as well and saw u guys perform, u were great!!
@@mrecruy lmao yeah I’m from piedmont, and thank you! What band were you from? We got to see a lot of band perform, I wonder if we saw you guys?
@@Dsol777 I’m from Piedmont, Oklahoma, I don’t think we went to any Pirate Cove thing. There are a lot of piedmonts lol
Fully deserved. It was and is the quintessential DCI show. Whenever I have to explain DCI to outsiders, it's Phantom Regiment's Spartacus I'm showing.
This is amazing. Thank you for sharing it!
Long live Regiment!
SUTA brought me to tears.
Is it any coincidence this was the last finals outdoors? Electric atmosphere you just don't get at Lucas Oil.
Best moment in DCI history!!!!
.025 point diff is crazy
this made me tear up
This is so special.
just from video I could tell that PR just sold their show better. Always loved them.

Like BD has never gotten 10s with corps still to perform.
For the algorithm. ✊
What year was that
This was the 2008 show
What is SUTA?
Marching for the Regiment is the only way to find that out.
Shove (It) Up Their Asses (at least that's what I think. I didn't march Regiment).
"Stand Up To Apathy/Aging/Alzheimer's"... your choice ;)
I was there, and we went absolutely apesh*t!
