Baby Birds Found in Grass - Rescued

- We've been watching our three baby Robins since they were eggs a few weeks ago and discovered them in our yard one morning with their nest blown out of the tree. I had always heard about not touching baby birds because their parents would then reject them due to your scent. This is totally false.
Scenario 1: Parents are around, nest can be recovered (like in this video) - Put the nest back, put the birds in their nest. Mom and/or Dad will take it from there.
Scenario 2: Parents are around, nest is lost/destroyed - Create a makeshift nest for them or raise the birds on your own if they're don't yet have feathers and fluff.
Scenario 3: No parents present - If they have feathers, they'll be fine as long as no cats or other predators get to them. If they're still pink they'll need to be raised by you.
Please keep in mind that I'm no expert - I just found this information online and had success with these little ones. Special thanks to Go Diego Go!
I'm glad you put them back in, a lot of people think you can't touch the babies but they have a very poor since of smell. Its very safe and parents will never abandon their young. Great Work 😀
Here in Canada and back in the mid 70s my 3 brothers and I saved a lot of baby black birds from a flood we had in a wooded area in the back of our house. There were at least 100 baby black birds, a lot drowned as they were falling out of their nests so we tried to save what we could. We built a refuge for them in our backyard and fed them until they flew away.
We were all kids, just a year apart in age, I was 10 or 11 but there was this one little girl about 7 whom wanted to bring one home to show her mom but we wouldn't let her. Well..eventually we gave in after her pleading for awhile, I and 2 of my brothers went with her and waited outside for her to bring the bird back but she was taking a long time to come back to the door. We started knocking and knocking and finally someone came to the door and we asked for the bird back and they said that their cat ate it and slammed the door on our cute little faces. lol I have never gotten over that! :(
I won't get into the baby ducks or our fort building and go-carts, OK? lol :)

Good! Most people dont know this, but TOUCHING BABY BIRDS TO PUT BACK IN THE NEST IS OKAY, THE MOM SMELLING HUMAN ON THEM AND ABANDONING THEM IS A MYTH :)

Exactly, They have bad sense of smell and (especially the female) after all the effort of raising the chicks and laying the eggs, they want to succeed so wouldn't even care if they heard you or even saw you putting them back in the nest

If you're careful you can actually get them to sit on your finger. Gently slide your finger sideways under the front of the chick - don't poke it with the tip of your finger - as you do this they will rear up and then climb onto it. if you don't feel like doing this with your finger, use a short stout stick and get them perching on it. Perching reflex is why putting your finger under them works to pick them up. If the parents are around they may be a bit alarmed if you pick them up using your finger or a stick. Remain calm and don't make any sudden movements if that is the case. The parents will take some time to get used to the concept of their young being on some giant human's finger, so find or make a new nest as quickly as possible and gently place the chicks into it. if you're lucky the parents will come along for a ride, sometimes birds just seem to understand if someone is trying to help them with their chicks, and that's okay if they show signs of realizing that fact. If they get a nice new location they might even come back and lay a new batch of eggs next breeding season.

Good job! Bird parents can be surprisingly tolerant of human contact - they didn't spend months building a nest, incubating eggs, and feeding hatchlings to simply abandon them at the slightest hint of human contact. If you can safely return a baby to its nest, or to location that's out of the way of predators (preferably higher up and with shade from the sun), it's perfectly reasonable to do so.

+iJustFlyDammit Birds do that all the time to keep the nest clean. They don't swallow it, they just take it away so the area is clean for their babies. It's sick, but it doesn't hurt them.
They do eat it for nutrition. It's like edible diapers or "nutrition sacks".

Nils Rasmusson birds have a poor sense of smell, you can pick them up and parents will still come back! The mother was picked up her babies poop, that's how they keep the nest clean, so that's what you saw!

You did the perfect thing, text book ! Although they do say if they have feathers to leave them alone as they probably just left on their own, these where still too small. If placing the nest back on the tree was not an option, one can use a basket or a small box and attach it to the tree and that'll serve as a makeshift nest. If you wouldn't have put them back, they would've been cat food in a very short time. Also, the parents will feed them , but they wont brood ( sit) on them at night. Cold is a problem with baby birds.

If the were younger they would but because the were nearly as big as the parent bird it would be impossible to do so. And once they have feathers even in the nest the parents sleep near by but not in the nest
+j moth99 I have seen many times, with almost fledgling birds, where the adult sits on them at night. Maybe it isn't an absolute fact one ay or the other, but I've seen this many a time. I have no knowledge of them brooding them on the ground if they are featherless. What have you seen regarding this ? Even if they do, they'd be cat food just the same though. Thanks.

Good job when people say if you touch the bird's mother won't take care of them that is a myth and I'm glad you knew that because you saved them I did that once before but I had to build a little nest out of wood because their nest fell apart but it worked out good just like yours

I can completely agree with touching the babies to get them out of harms way, we just did a similar thing for a baby blue jay but since the nest was in an old oak tree about 40 feet in the air putting it back was out of the question. We brought the baby inside the house in a cage connecting to our window for our cats and the next morning the parents showed up looking at him.
I think I would have wired or tied the nest onto the branches with twine.
But good job anyhow.

at the begging of summer my family found a baby robin and we kept it in our house for i think a month and a half and we fed it and it was perfectly fine after that
My cat took a bird out of our best in my back yard and it was only a couple days old and had no chance of survival because the mom wasn't coming to get it...so I got some hospital gloves and put it back in the best and the mom and babies are all okay

One day we found 2 baby birds we had a hard time giving it to its mother we almost got out heads scratched but eventually we got it to the parents and after a few days it knew how to fly

Mother bird really doesn't know what to do if the nest blown down on the ground.
Most baby birds leave the nest without being able to fly. Eventually they end up on the ground but they can climb back up a tree onto a branch the parents will care for them. The problem with that is the amount of feral cats all over . If a baby bird should happen to fall, it's cat food even before hitting the ground.

I was curious what you were taking video with for the up-close part with mom and babies. It’s quite clear but not sure how far away you were so mom would just do her own thing.
It was just a Canon DSLR on a tripod, maybe 3 feet off the ground. The mom stayed away while I was setting it up but then came back shortly after I walked away.
143 crows disliked the video. Sadly, more will come. 😔
They were not ok. I saw them like that. In the next morning, I checked back and I only saw only legs and feathers.

I found 2 of them and took them in and took care of them cause their nest was nowhere around and we had a storm.

I feel videos like this spreads good will to animals, passes on knowledge to other people that have similar situations and encouraging people to be kind to animals, so this is great! :) sure brightened my day watching this
birds this young and even a bit older will NOT be ok if the parents are not there to take care of them and nothing is done to assist them. also, cats are not the only threat for birds this young which cannot fly....heavy rains can drown downed baby birds, bad weather conditions (cold temps at night) can kill them, other creatures (dog, kids, prey birds) can harm them, vehicles can run them over, etc.

I know for the fact that we can not touch their eggs or nest or even be close to it. I have seen and experiences myself and I have proof.
I have rescue two sick and injured pigeons a female and male I put them both in my garage so I can care for them and they can stay safe and warm
for the time beings. As time goes on they became mating partners and the female laid 2 eggs on he nest. I already know about not to touch their eggs
because they will abandon so I was careful not to touch their eggs but only clean their nest because it was dirty with feces and I thought it was OK but
I find out that we can't even touch their nest becasue both of the male and female abandon their eggs, but before the male abandon he took his time to
brood (sit on top of eggs) for two nights because I think he still worried that their eggs might be too cold since it was still winter season.
Then after that they both have another set of eggs.Since I find out the hard way that I can't even touch their nest so I didn't touch or clean but I thought it was OK to
just to stand and watch their eggs. Little do I know that they still both abandoned their eggs for the second time! Because even I didn't touch the eggs or nest or anywhere around them but just by standing a little close was enough to contaminate their eggs and nest with my human scent and odor.
It's been around 3 years now and I still haven't forgive myself. Every time I think about it I still cry and regret. It hurts me so much to see them abandon their eggs and it's hurts more because it was my fault. So please don't ever make a mistake like I did!
Touching the chicks to put them in the nest is fine. Hovering over them 24/7 is what makes the parents never return.

robins leave their nest before they are fully fledged, and the parents track them and feed them. In a few days the baby is flying and following the parents as they forage, thus learning how to forage from 'experts' You should never move a bird like this until you are certain it';s parents are not in contact with it. If it is in a road, you move it as minimally as you can to make it safe from traffic

The do leave the best early, yes. But not that early. And the nest was blown down in the wind, they didn't fledge. And it is fine to do want he did. Well done

What you should do is make a FAKE NEST from natural materials like a small straw basket, and hang it securely in the tree as high as you can.
The mother will feed her babies and protect them from cats. In Australia the Australian Wildlife Conservancy have estimated we have 28million feral cats each killing a couple (at least) of small native mammals each night. Thats 56million each night.
No wonder Australia has the worst small mammal extinction rate in the world.
