GANGSTER SACCO | Unearthing rot in matatu industry

  • It’s a sector that embodies impunity, corruption and bribery all rolled into one evil trinity that has earned itself the status of an institution.
From rogue drivers to rude and violent conductors and on to faceless mobsters, Kenya’s Matatu Sector is nothing short of a haven of the domestic terrorists.
They are rulers of bus stations, they control matatu routes and run all the vital functions of the public transport sector; and all the while reigning over terrified passengers with iron fisted tactics that include outright violence, threats and intimidation, and even abduction.
The authorities; from the ministry of transport, ministry of interior, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the police traffic department have been swinging between indifference and helplessness, resignation and collusion as gangsters run the Matatu or indeed the entire Kenyan public transport sector
On the eve of the so called crackdown on lawlessness in the public transport sector, we bring to you the face of not just impunity, corruption, and anarchy, but also the heart of evil itself.
Citizen TV’s investigative journalist Purity Mwambia has been traveling undercover with Matatus and Buses that ply various routes in Nairobi and across the country and brings you horrifying experiences Kenyan passengers go through in the hands of what we now here on Citizen TV nickname ‘Gangster Sacco’.
Over now to Purity Mwambia with our special investigative story ‘Gangster Sacco’. #GangsterSacco #MatatuLawlessness
Citizen TV is Kenya's leading television station commanding an audience reach of over 60% and in its over 12 years of existence as a pioneer brand for the Royal Media Services (RMS), it has set footprints across the country leaving no region uncovered.

Why blame them, the rot in the transport industry is a reflection of the society they live in and interact with. We encourage them to overlap during rash hours, board full matatus, don't alight at designated bus stops, the list is endless. An inner reflection should bring us more insight before blaming everyone but ourselves.

fred mutuma Amen! I don’t know why many don’t get this! For the police officers/law enforcers, they need to recruit only the most qualified individuals/the best! Empower/retrain the police, pay them well with good benefits. After this, any found to be corrupt, put em in, in prison! Otherwise this show off with Matiang’i will be just for a moment, then we’re back to square one!

in my opinion, this was long over due but the kamagera thing is taken way out of proportion, they just help the matatu crew to get more customers, instead of lazying around, they do this as hustle...the problem is with the matatu association, police, the owners and cartels who are against a public and standard mode of operation.

  • @mafarso
    @mafarso 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Purity u need to do a season 2 of the 'gangsters sacco'.this time tell the kamageras to introduce u to there families n kids,it brings joy to see most of them providing for there families...n don't be soo blinded by the 20's they collect ...multiply that to how many families benefit from that 20 Bob.n maybe address the issue the accidents and kamageras separetly ....can't wait for the 2nd season

This Simon Kimutai chairman of Matatu Association has been their chair since early 2000's on tv he talks like a harvard graduate yet has no teeth or nuts to comprehensively ascertain a modicum of sanity in his own industry. We cant keep losing lives because of this madness sure safety belts, speed governors, retraining apart from getting rid of the Art works on them as an artist that am against but all else the government should not relent and should get even tougher!!Am in a state called victoria in Melbourne the death figure last year on the roads was about 267 and was considered unacceptable!that's about 8x more in Kenya. We need tech and even more serious laws to stop 2000 plus people dying from madness on kenyan roads.

There are saccos that follow the law and do as is expected of them, a good example is chepkoilel matatu sacco in Eldoret Uasin gishu county, i challenge citizen tvs journalists to head there and see for themselves. This sacco has visionary leaders to the extent of purchasing buses that are owned by the sacco and every member having shares in the assets, collectively they own a carwash and a petrol station. Such people should be praised for their high level of organisation and used as an example to those that have proven to be rogue. Let us join hands in being part of the solution and not part of the problem by glorifying rogue operators

Let's be real with what's happening in real life, this young men and women are unemployed, and they need to feed their families.. Kamagera's help drivers and conductors to take a break after a long drive(staying in jam).so as one can earn 100 Bob, which he has really worked for - touting isn't easy, imagine you're in a bus stop, there are 5 more mini buses and each carries 33 passengers.. . If the government has implemented or created job opportunities to the youth, this wouldn't be happening...as far as I know coz I so use matatu daily, the government should first deal with the impunity they've created( due to corrupt traffic men in uniform..)
Show this unemployed men and women how to earn money and not cutting short where they usually get their daily bread..
This thing has been happening for decades.. It didn't just start..

The only thing to be done is to create jobs at county levels most of these guys leave ushago to nairobi in search of greener pasture when it turns sour they turn to any gangs so county government should do something...if we have branches of all these major company in most counties and employ guys over there no one will come to hustle in nairobi, haki you bring your abroad friend to nairobi and you get adhamed on how these guys rub shoulders in bus stations so dirty drunk and smelly anyway something needs to be done....As a guy pointed it out the most succesful countries transport is run by government but our government is so corupt, our president says he wants to leave a legacy of peace (steal while i dont shout) thats peace he got from opposition.

Problem is unemployment. Shunning them won't create a solution. So the problem will still exist even till this day. So the day the government will decide to pull up their socks, they will still be hustling. Human instinct is to survive. I hope that resonates.
