I have read 6 of the culture novels liked them all so far ! exccesion use of weapons and player of games my favourites so far .

Scared to read Banks because a) most of his books are weapons grade lengthwise and b) not sure they are my cup of tea, not that pre-judgement is an exact science. Question . . .how do you find the time to re-read books ? If I read all the books in my collection just once I would need to live until I was 150.
They are middling length. I am sprinkling re-reads in, one or two a month, just for old times sake. I try not to think too hard about the zillions of unread books on my shelves...

Haven't read any Banks but I've been told this is the one to start with, thanks for the confirmation. Doesn't sound that interesting to me but I'll give it a shot at some point.

@@SciFiScavenger Haha, no you did great. It's just the idea of a book about playing games sounds kind of boring to me. But I will give it a try and hopefully be surprised.
@@sfwordsofwonder well it is about more than that. Intervention at civilisation level, alien cultures, espionage, nothing is what it seems, drone/human equivalence, enhanced humans (genetics, built in drug/stim dispensers, gender morphing), giant kickass spaceships and much more. But also games...
This is the 2nd book in the series. It has some chronology In sense. The Culture evolves in the books. Not so important as in a fantasy series but the powers are moving in politics and such. Even here the Culture has a different approach already as would have in the 1st book.
