    The Flint River is much improved over what it was. A century ago, there was commercial fishing on the river in Flushing. Pollution caused by Flint made the river not much more than an open sewer when I lived in Flushing in the late ‘50’s through the ‘70’s. It literally stunk. The only fish there , which were inedible, were some carp and a few hardy bass. Now, people fish for walleye, go canoeing and kayaking and even swim in it. The Flint water problem wasn’t so much that the water was polluted ( upstream from Flint it was always not that bad) but they failed to adequately treat it.

    • @erictrantham9903
      @erictrantham9903 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's doesn't stink to much, up to last summer it was safe to eat the fish within guideline. There was a chemical spill in the Flint River last year that made the fish harmful yo eat.

      I'm a Flushing native and I've lived within a stones throw of the Flint River for my entire life.
      You're absolutely correct when you mention how bad the river was back in the day. When I was a child in the '60s, most houses along the river dumped their sewage directly into the river and when combined with the industrial pollution from the factories in Flint, it was a mess. My grandfather, who also had a house along the river, used to joke that GM was missing the boat and that they should be using the water from the Flint river as anti-freeze because it was so polluted that no matter how cold it got the river wouldn't freeze over in the winter.
      In the '70s there was a major infrastructure project that created a sanitary sewer system and the newly created EPA cracked down on GM's dumping. By the early '80s the improvement in the water quality was massive. It even started freezing over again. Now, as you say, one can fish and canoe and there's even a salmon run. Having said that, my memories of how bad the river used to be still puts me off eating any fish from the river.
      It's a pity that the video was taken in the winter when all the trees are bare. In summer then the trees are filled out, and especially in autumn when the leaves are changing, Flushing can look quite spectacular.

      @@silentotto5099 Until a few years ago, they had a Walleye festival in Flushing this time of year when the Walleye would run and they had fishing contests. They had a fish fry at the Catholic Church. You could get fresh Walleye or Cod. I always got the Cod. I never trusted Flint River fish. Someone else posted about a recent chemical spill and the Flint River fish had been declared unsafe to eat although I never heard that and don’t know how long it would last, if true. Still, I wouldn’t eat the fish, just because I remember what the river once was. If I was into that sort of thing, boating there might be fun in the summer.

    • @silentotto5099
      @silentotto5099 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lowellwhite1603 The comment on the chemical spill was accurate and a warning was put out that not only covered eating fish caught in the river, but avoiding contact with the river water all together. I don't recall how long it was in force, but that was last summer so I'm sure it's expired by now.
      As I indicated in my comment, I'm the same as you when it comes to eating fish from the river. I also remember what it used to be and that's a big put-off.
      When I was a kid we used to canoe in the river quite a lot in the summer Back then, the river would get so choked with weeds from all of the organic pollution that it was almost impossible to get the canoe down the river. We would literally have to get out of the canoe and push it through the weeds in some places. It's totally different now and is quite a nice canoeing experience, especially in the autumn when the leaves are turning.
      The Flint River has come a long way down the path to recovery over the course of my life and I'm very happy about it.

    That median home value has to be much higher now. I just bought a house in flushing. It's not a fancy home by any means. Very modest working/lower middle class type home. It's a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom ranch (although it does have a finished basement), its about 1620 square feet, has a half acre yard. Older home built in the 1960s. I paid 226,000 for it. And I actually got a deal because the estimated value is 237,000. But the house needs some minor repairs that aren't that big of a deal to me, and the guy was in a hurry and didn't want to have to show the house to 100s of people.

    I shake my head at some of the stuff here, like for instance, the grossly excessive overuse of toilet sound effects (I guess youth is wasted on the young). But overall, if your job brings you to Genesee County, don't turn down that job just yet. In my experience, Flushing is a very, very lovely place, and a great place to raise a family. There are a lot of nice kids in the high school. I don't live there exactly, but I live nearby. But I like to go to Flushing when I can, especially to park behind Bueche's market so I can hike along the "Riverwalk." You can walk along the river and at times you would swear you were in northern Michigan. It's lovely. And there's a bridge that goes across the river and leads to "Flushing Park," a local county park. And it's beautiful. Within the park there's a ridge high above the north side of the river. I've taken many photos there. You could sit down and contemplate, or write, or whatever. Or paint, even (even though I've never seen anyone do THAT. But you COULD). So you can cleanse your soul even within a few miles of the legendary bucolic industrial splendor of Flint.

    Flushing gives you an idea of what parts of Flint looked like at one time. It was built just far enough out from Flint to keep the riff raff out. They would stick out like a sore thumb and the local police would mess with them on sight. You could take a Flint city bus from Flushing along Flushing rd. east all the way to downtown Flint for about 15-20 cents one way and home again. Other little towns like Davison, Grand Blanc and Swartz Creek were similar in size and attitude. It's where Flint residents fled to escape the open housing act that accelerated Flint's decline.

      @@kelliemishmish You’re not the only one, it commonly gets brought up on videos I make on different places.
      Technically, there is no clear definition of a suburb which leaves it up for debate… and it’s not as common of a used term for mid-sized cities like Flint as it is for larger cities like Detroit.
      I tend to use the term suburb as being any city/municipality that lies in close proximity to a larger primary city… or I’ll use it to describe a growing city/municipality if that place experiences said growth because it’s apart of a larger populated area. I don’t think flushing would be as big or as wealthy if it weren’t for being in the Flint Metro because small towns on their own are typically poorer than average.
      In the grand scheme of things, it’s all apart of segregation. Essentially all of flint is poverty stricken and poor with a few nice neighborhoods, where as “suburbs” like Flushing, Davison and Grand Blanc hold the majority of the middle class/upper class households in the flint area. It’s just how it is.

      Separated by I-75 and Mt Morris Twp. I live in Flushing but haven’t been to the north side of Flint in years. When I think north side, I think north Saginaw St. North side was the bad part of town 50 years ago. My church was there on North Saginaw and I got assaulted in the mid sixties when l was the first to leave. The church moved to Flint Twp in the 80’s due crime being intolerable.
