What is Subject, Verb, Object, Complement, Modifier: Grammatical Functions [basic English grammar]

  • This video deals with the grammatical functions of English: the subject, verb, object, complement, and modifier. The grammatical function analyzes English sentence through the relationship between each group of words and the verb. Most sentences roughly fit into 5 types of sequences of grammatical functions.

    2: *Seeing* is *believing*
    3: *Agreement having been reached,* the striking miners returned to work.
    4: Will you please take *this* book to her .
    5: Is this the motorcycle *which* is for sale?
    6: The team members *collapsed,* *exhausted* *by all their efforts.*
    7: The students walked carefully *along the* *pathway* to the stream.
    8: The disease, AIDS *appear to be spreading with alarming speed*
    9: Today's *agreement* should lead to *peace* in the near *future*.
    10: The car *Jane* was driving *belongs* to *her* *uncle*.

      1.prosessive noun functioning as object of preposition, at
      2.seeing is gerund as subject,while believing is aslo gerund acting as subject complement
      3.it us passive perfect participial phrase acting as adverbial phrase also called reduce adverb clause modifying the main clause
      4.This is demonstrative determiner coming before noun,noun phrase or pronoun ,so this book called noun phrase acting as object of V.take
      5.which is relative pronoun using in adj.clause that can be either subject or object in adj.clause.as a whole , which is for sales modifying motorcycle coming before it.
      6.Collapsed is just v.2,whereas exhausted by... is part participial phrase acting as adjective modifying the main clause.
      7.Called prepositional phrase acting as adverbial to modify walked
      8.Just a verb and modifier , infinitive with to phrase ,to be..,.followed
      9.Agreement is just a noun acting as subject with possessive noun today's and also piece is just a noun as well acting as object of preposition,to(please do not be confused with to+v.base form called infinitive with to),So to peace as prepositional phrase acting as adverbial phrase modifying v.lead
      10.Jane is just subject in that clause as adjective clause by omitting that due to acting as object of driving,and belongs is just verb in main clause (the car belongs to her) and adjective clause can be separated to another main clause like Jane was driving the car(object to be omitted in adjective clause in your given sentence)

    Sorry, but there should not be any misspelled words! Sate? Introdcues? I stopped watching after that but noticed another comment about sentences not making sense.
