  • Spyderco VG-10 edge retention testing, this is a fast forward if you will. 3 edges down for this video, how do you think it did. Is it really as bad as it's made out to be in groups and forums?

    Always been a fan of VG10! Holds up pretty well in my book! Thanks for sharing buddy!

      You're welcome JB, it also strops back nicely.

    What's funny is that it wasn't all that long ago that VG-10 was the "super steel" to have! ;-) It's considered passe now but there's really nothing wrong with it as a baseline. As a chef that's done some moonlighting as a professional sharpener I've probably sharpened more VG-10 than anything else (and more than most folks will in a couple of lifetimes) I have a fairly positive impression of VG-10. For the money it's not bad. It takes a pretty good edge, it's worth taking up to 5k and it's reasonably durable. The tendency towards microchipping goes away after a few sharpenings in most cases. Overall it's not bad stuff. Again, it was only ten years ago or so that it was considered pretty hot stuff!

      Its a supersteel still. The high carbide steels are killed by high impact ceramic, there’s zero incentive in buying anything over magnacut in wear resistance properties. Too many downsides.

    Great job! All these tests that you and SuperSteel Steve are doing are tearing down a lot of accepted "truths" about different types of steels. At last the community has som hard evidence of the performance of these steels! Thank you! Looking forward to the conclusion. 👍

      Thank you, I'm glad that more of these tests are being done to show how these production steels compare. I heard lots of bad about VG-10 and it didn't hold true. I also hear over and over how good production M390 and 20CV are yet they repeatedly fall short in testing and use. I have lots more coming so I have a much larger data base to compare.

    Thank you Sir. I have been sharpening by hand for about 30 years now and you are the first person besides myself that I have heard discussing the fact that it takes multiple sessions to see what you have!
    3-7 is when you find the soul of the steel.

      You're welcome, I think too many judge a steel or knife off the factory or first sharpening. Some of these really come alive once you get past the fatigued factory edge.

    Thanks for doing these videos. Out of all my knives, this one keeps getting into my pocket. Spydercos VG-10 is a great all around EDC steel that you do not have to worry about. It is really nice to know you can find one of these anytime.

    WOW, this is a revelation. In the past few months you, Super Steel Steve and Big Brown Bear have revolutionized the way some of us think about edge geometry/steel/ hardness/performance. Again, thanks for the great contribution.

    Your Endura test kicked ass, period. Made me think about all my knives.
    Ok, I bought the first Delica that came in FFG. I liked that knife alot, VG-10 was OK with me then. Strop a couple times a week, sharpen every 2 or 3 weeks, we were good to go. The Delica was a sweet light duty EDC that was smooth and reliable. I think I paid about 40 bucks for it.
    So in the back of my knife drawer is an old, neglected dirty green Delica. I took it out tore it down, cleaned the scales with simple green and a toothbrush, lubed it up and put it back together ( wicked easy if you use the lockbar zip tie trick). Looked freakin' new. Sharpened it and finished it with an old superfine alumina oxide stone. Stroped it on my oldschool Flexcut strop. The hair fell off my arm, quietly gliding through phonebook paper.
    Used it hard in the shop all weekend, lots of cardboard, tape a few tie wraps, some wood etc. It will no longer shave hairs, hangs up in phonebook paper. Cuts printer paper fine, still gets through cardboard good.
    I Stroped it 10 times a side, it kinda scrap shaves, cuts phonebook paper again. ..... so VG-10 not too bad if you realize its not maximet !
    But I think a Delica in CTS-XHP would be amazing, and bet Spyderco could do it for 100.00 a knife. Sign me up.
    Again AWESOME test, my Delica in my pockey again today. What a sweet carrying little EDC knife.

      Thank you, I'm glad you got some more enjoyment out of that knife. If there was an XHP Delica I'd buy a few. That would be an awesome knife.

    I bought my Endura 4, when it came out with VG-10, because that steel was "just about the best knife steel around"...I've Never had an issue with it...Keeps a nice edge, and some abuse. I get a chuckle out of all these new steels....Hell, I've got two delicas with Aus8, for the same reason..."This is just a blah blah blah" Never had an issue...I also remember people calling SV30 Crap, and praising D2 as way superior...Now you can hardly give D2 away...Sure glad I don't buy my knives on someone else's opinion,,,,, Great Video Thank you

    Yeah buddy🤘🤘that’s a solid result, and personally, I like vg10. For the prices on a lot of vg10 knives the performance is more than adequate, and it takes a nice edge and strops back super easy. Not really sure why it got such a bad rap. I know I wouldn’t spend more than maybe a 100 bucks for vg10, but under 100 I think is fair. Especially for a well treated vg10. Can’t thank you enough for all that your doing✌️ nice work!

      Thanks, I've come to like VG-10. I'm not sure why it gets picked on either, it's a solid steel for the price.

    I’ve had an Endura for about 6 years that I use as my beater for doing stuff that I normally wouldn’t do with my other knives. Never really had a problem with it. Edge retention actually seems like it has actually improved as I’ve used it over the years and it strops back real quick. Would I buy one for almost $90 these days? Doubtful. But I’ll sure hang on to this one til I lose it or it dies.

    VG10 is great. but spyderco does heat treat it a little lower than most at 58hrc. but at the price its not too bad. ive got some vg10 at 60hrc and its wicked. ive also seen vg10 from russia thats been through a cryo process. those things cut and cut and cut and cut... nearly m390 range of cutting.

    • @Outpost_76
      @Outpost_76  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well done VG-10 is very nice. As far as M390, this Spyderco VG-10 is only 21 feet behind the Kershaw M390 I tested for working edge. The Masserin M390 Steve tested was very well done coming very close to S90V performance.

    Awesome, test. You are bringing me to the conclusion that in the real world that steel is only one small factor in a good knife.

    • @Outpost_76
      @Outpost_76  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, that is true. Lots of steels are pretty close together in performance from a production stand point.

    If Spyderco hardened its vg10 to hrc62 or so it just might outperform more exotic super steels when word got out they would not buy the expense of steel they would buy the hardened properly vg10

    is it still catching fingernail during the working edge test?

    • @Outpost_76
      @Outpost_76  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not test the apex in that way. I do periodically check for apex feedback from my finger tips to get a brain visual of the edge quality.

    For my two cents, I have a Benchmade with VG-10 and a Boker with VG-10. I sharpen my knives with a Spyderco Sharpmaker, running from diamond triangles, to medium, to fine triangles. Personally, I cannot got either of these knives as sharp as I want. Maybe I'm just not patient enough, but all of my other knives don't require so much work, and will quickly get arm hair shaving sharp. I'm sure if you have a system that can GET your VG-10 sharp, it looks like a great steel that will perform admirably, but I'll never buy another knife with VG-10 for myself.

    • @Outpost_76
      @Outpost_76  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may those particular examples. I have 3 Spyderco VG-10 that sharpen without issue but a Kizer VG-10 that just doesn't get very sharp. I haven't sharpened any BM VG-10 and as far as Boker goes I don't remember how thier VG-10 was.
