I'm surprised by the amount of reporters that have gone to Abaco and reported. Because one reporter said, he could smell the stench of decaying bodies. He walked over to a leveled church and could see hands and legs sticking out. Basically the island is now a danger from disease and infection for as long as those corpses stay there decomposing in the hot sun. No reporters should be going there period unless they are wearing hazmats until all the bodies are taken out.

FEMA bathroom trailers, buckets and biodegradable poo bags, Tide laundry trailer, solar panels, and emergency portable cell tower with the different cell network systems attached (it'll take weeks to rewire existing towers due to saltwater damage) need to be sent via cargo airline once the runway has been cleared on Grand Abaco. We have the means to get this equipment on the ground in less than 24 hours now. We can send FEMA trailers to the islands on cargo ships and airlift them to fields to shelter those who wish to stay to clean up and those arriving to aid the survivors. Tents, tarps, food, water, and medicine can all be air dropped. A C130 is capable of delivering a dozens of pallets and vehicles. Every developed nation has the ability to chip in with immediate deployment of personnel and vital, life saving supplies. The first pass can drop heavy equipment to clear debris in order to create space for huge tents for medical facilities, kitchens, mess halls, bathroom facilities, housing, and even an immigration office to track those leaving the island. When troops deploy to a remote area they quickly set up their own small city with supplies air dropped. When a landing strip is carved out they can bring in large equipment. They're even capable of setting up a mini desalination plant. It's expensive, but will certainly allow more people to stay on the islands to speed up the massive cleanup and recovery operation.
A cargo ship need to be converted into a cement plant in order to provide enough cement to rebuild the destroyed homes made of wood and concrete block. Barges will need to ferry all of the gravel, Portland cement, and sand necessary to make the concrete mix from Florida. These cement homes have a cement ceiling with a decorative wood roof over them to ensure survivability. If the ceiling/roof is not concrete, the entire structure becomes compromised once the wooden roof is ripped off in the next hurricane. As seen all over the island, concrete block structures were ripped apart after the lost their roof or by the unprecedented and relentless storm surge. Those with two story cement homes with cement ceilings/roofs survived. They have repairs to make, but their homes are still standing. Rebuilding homes with wood or concrete block is not the answer. In the rush to rebuild their homes many will turn to wood. Sadly their homes will be wiped out during the next category two or greater hurricane. Those who rebuild with cement floors, walls, and most importantly cement roof, can easily move everything to the second floor when the next hurricane is heading their way. Even the cabinets can be lifted off brackets mounted to the cement walls in the kitchen and bathrooms. Electrical outlets can have stainless steel plates screwed over them to keep storm surge water out of the wiring tunnels in the concrete walls.
The Bahamian government, with financial support from developed nations, can subsidize some of the added cost of reconstructing their homes with concrete if a cement plant can be set up either on land or via a cement plant ship. The cost of a ship converted into a cement plants could easy be covered by one or two billionaires. Such a ship can be deployed to aid in building or rebuilding all over the world. A few contracted deployments for construction projects not associated with rebuilding after a disaster, could make the vessel profitable. It's a tax write-off if one sets it up as a charitable project. Once it's no longer needed in the disaster zone, the vessel can the be converted into a for profit company on paper or sold to a new for profit operator.
    Cheers!

I just have to remind you, the Bahamas isn't part of the USA at all, FEMA is. I'm sure if they need our help, we will, but please remember that the Bahamas isn't a helpless place. Few people immigrate from the Bahamas. It is its own country. They have their own military. The USA has Coast Guard stations nearby and on the island. The Bahamas is the wealthiest country in the Caribbean and the 3rd wealthiest out of all countries in North/South America. This isn't the first hurricane to hit the island and they will be fine.

You mean to say the greatest Christian nation on earth with the largest military in the world can do nothing more than fly a few of their helicopters around at night shining their spot light on the people who are suffering below? Why aren't they mass evacuating these people by helicopter to ships docked nearby so they can be relocated to the southern islands? These islands are now uninhabitable, there is no use anybody staying there to rebuild there is NOTHING LEFT to rebuild, it will take decades for them to recover and it will be slow.

That dry dock would be my camping site until they get things sorted out. Plenty of materials to construct a temporary shelter. Need a toilet, dig a hole on high ground. As long as the potable water is brought in all other issues are avoidable - been there done that in far more precarious places and situations. I'd flip over one of those boats and start fishing or fish from the dock. Or better yet find a fishing net and feed the needy. Rule number one, stay calm and don't panic.

But wells contaminated with sea water aren’t easy to clean . They will require fresh water from a desalination plant or provided by cargo ships for at least several months. At least they are relative few persons living there . And the military can put a desalination plant to work relatively soon .
