You missed to run "select * from dba_registry_sqlpatch;" in database at the end to check the status of patching in database.
That is true. You may run this to verify the data patching
Did you try this ever with switch over to allow zero downtime? I came across to see the same.Thanks by the way for putting the time here.
As you know patching is two steps. Binary patching and data patching. With DG you will do only Binary patching,thus, switchover will not leads to zero downtime. Only rac is rolling patching with interruption actually while stop one node
