🧐Frequently Asked Questions About Our Online Lessons:
Q❓: I have no experience with katana. Will I still be able to catch up?
A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons.
Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback.
Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use?
A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length.
The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training.
Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style?
A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all.
The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing.

I have a specific question about katana blade type. I prefer unokubi-zukuri katana. Are there any techniques specifically adapted for this type of katana that might not be widely known?

Seki Sensei's movements and explanations of what he is doing (AND WHY!) are incredibly valuable for teaching and training. It's no wonder he is as renowned as he is. The emphasis he places on understanding why things are as they are, not just that they are, helps complete the picture for the student.

I like that he stressed the point that you want to be dodging the opponent's strike to effectively counter but the blade is in a blocking position as well.

Hey Shogo Seki Sensei, one important lesson I learned from karate and Ryukyu Kobudo is the ability to practising kata by myself. I practice my kenjutsu kata, (both sides of omote kat of Katori Shinto Ryu) by myself so I can remember what I have been taught and don't lose it. It is a great way to visualise the combative applications hidden in the kata. Great introductory video, and I hope newcomers benefit from it.

It’s always good to practice them. I guarantee at one point, it will be engrained into your muscles fiber, and your muscles will remember them! Keep it up with the training.

That Shomen-uchi/Uke-Nagashi drill & its variations are classic - I first encountered it in the early 1990s doing Aiki-ken. It appeared again and again in other sword arts with pair-practices. And I used it while teaching a small group of students. Everyone I have encountered has always enjoyed this practice.

Ukenagashi means "flowing block." However, it's important to note that it's more a deflection than a block, which allows for a quick counter-attack. The technique differs slightly according to applications. The important constant, as stated by Seki Sensei and my own MJER sensei, is not to actually "block" during ukenagashi. You primarily redirect your opponent's sword. On a separate point, these are great videos for training, but only in conjunction with practice in a dojo. Iaido/iaijutsu, like any martial art, required the pursuit (in vain, perhaps) of perfection of refinements. So it's important to have a trained observer or teacher to make observations and recommend corrections.

I also come from an iaido background and, even without practicing a kenjutsu ryuha, came to the same conclusion as Seki-sensei about ukenagashi during my own practice. I would recommend to any practitioner of sword arts to try envision how their techniques would actually work against a resisting/attacking opponent and adjust them accordingly. Unless, of course, you can (safely) pressure-test them for real with a partner. If you don't have access to a partner, carefully observe paired kata or sparring footage online and analyze how techniques are applied in practice.

Conceptually, ukenagashi is very similar to the hanging parry found in many european longsword treatises. I recommend studying the european hanging parry and how HEMA practitioners employ it in sparring, as it provides useful additional context for ukenagashi.

Like in Aiki Ken (which has its roots in Kashima_Shinto-ryu and other ryus), most important was body positioning. Moving to the side to clear the cut as you are countering and cutting back in the same action.

Bought my own unsharpened sword just to train these techniques! Although I had a question: what should you do when fighting someone with a longer weapon than you?
For example if you had a katana and your opponent has a spear. Reach is often a defining factor of many duels in my experience.
Also curious about what to do when your opponent aims for your legs,is there a reliable counter to an attack like this?
Preferably something that does not target the face as my sparring groups disapprove of attacks to the head.

A small detail I'm wondering about.
I often see when practitioners step in to do a straight cut, the cut comes just a moment after they step in. Some have explained that they use the momentum of their body to drive the sword. However, what I was taught was the cut and step are simultaneous because if one steps into the "danger-zone" (where both can contact each other) with a late cut, you will get killed or injured first.
    Is this relevant I wonder?

He would be an amazing person to talk to... I'm sure... He has obviously been around. For many many changes... In Japan...
And I wonder how much he knows of the West.. or American culture..
For example.. yes of course.. we have a lot.. of weebs.. that just think of swords and blades and katanas.. as Ninja or Just Kung Fu. And just don't take anything seriously.
But then.. most of us that CARE that you are asking this man. To show off his life's work to us. We Do care.. do learn the true forms... The and appreciate the Importance of what he does...
I just wish for him to know this... Somehow... That the majority of us.. care for and respect... The old ways.. and Culture of Japan...
