    This video is so helpful! I was wondering why my paper buckles all the time even though its 300 gms watercolor paper. I noticed now that the label did not specify what it is made out of ... and when I bought it I was just focused on the weight and it says watercolor paper, and it is a small sketchbook that I can carry with me everywhere. I also noticed that when I do wet on wet technique sometimes I feel like some of the paper material sort of "disintegrate " (?maybe) and there are these tiny clumps as I'm painting... does this mean I put too much water? Thank you so much for your quick tutorials I really love it as I'm just starting to get into watercolor painting this year!!

    • @Makoccino
      @Makoccino  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      No worries, I had no idea about that either when I just started out! Usually when it's high quality cotton paper they always say it's cotton. If they don't say anything, it's probably just regular wood pulp paper. I think the tiny clumps shouldn't happen but I think it's more due to overworking the paper. Cellulose paper for example is more fragile so you can easily overwork it if you go over with the brush too often or too firmly. Cotton paper on the other hand is more durable!

  • @Leeqzombie
    @Leeqzombie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I use heavy cotton paper, and found it still warped, but honestly I just use the washi tape trick. It works well enough for me. I mainly buy high quality painter's tape from the hardware store. If you're scared about spraying water on the back messing up the painting, there's plenty of spray fixatives and sealants. I've even used Citadel varnish (yes, intended for miniatures) to seal watercolour paintings. Micador Workable Fixative is a lot cheaper and works just as well.

    • @shizotypical
      @shizotypical 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My problem with tape is that when it's too sticky, it damages the paper when I rip it off, but if it's not sticky enough, it sticks off the board as the paper starts to wave...

    A video I saw on painting a sunset or something anyway. She said that the reason why the paper rolls up is because the paper Soaks up the paint while drying. And she said to avoid that problem I’d to dry your painting after you paint it before you add other colors to it if it requires your paint to be dryed. She would use a hairdryer to dry her paint on the paper after she got the background the way she wanted it to be. And after each color depending on if you want the paint to be fully dried or not. And after you get done painting to dry it with a hairdryer to dry it so the paper won’t soak up the paint and the water in the paint if it’s water color or not. I never would have thought of that lol. Good tip.

    I bought some cotton watercolor paper and it's nice. But it buckles as much as my Canson XL paper even taped down! I tried stretching the paper but it's no use. I finally found a way to get zero buckling and warping while painting, it's very simple and needs no special equipment. I wet the paper on both sides with a flat brush gently, then I take a soaked paper towel and smooth it out on my waterproof surface. I then place my damp sheet of paper on top of my cloth and it "sticks" to it (I use my clean hands to press it down). I usually dry the paper side I want to use first then wet it again, because the paint might seep underneath and stain the other side. I have used so much water and it doesn't buckle at all, the only disadvantage is that you won't have crisp clean white borders like you get with masking tape.

    Hi, i really love your videos and the way you explain with demonstrations.
    I'm really interested in watercolour painting however i am not sure about when to use wet on dry and wet on wet technique. Could you do a video on this? Like when to use wet on wet and when to use dry on wet, as well as the effects that different techniques can achieve. E.g. the difference between using wet on dry vs wet on wet to paint sky and clouds, oceans and other backgrounds.
    Thank you.

  • @F2p7YshCn9
    @F2p7YshCn9 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally stretch the paper (cotton and wood) after painting (it's a Chinese technique but I like doing it with Western watercolour as well). I wet the back of the painting with a thin wheat glue and attach it to bigger piece of paper which I glue to a wooden board. When it's dry I cut the borders of the backing paper and get a straight painting. The painting also gets thicker which means it'll be stronger than just a single sheet.

    • @Makoccino
      @Makoccino  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There are 2 methods one is with dry paper and the one is with water! When you use water first and tape it down you stretch it and make it stay flat. Here you usually use tape especially made for that. Or you use dry paper and just use tape to fix it to the board or table to reduce warping. I use the tape method without the water :)

Well, since we're mere students and we can't afford a high quality watercolor pad, we actually do a technique that you listed out. After the paint dries, we let lie on a table with anything flat and heavy like a stack of books atop of it and leave it over night.

    Saw this as a comment already but I'll reiterate:
    I use deckle edged cotton paper so tape doesn't agree with it. Wetting both sides has been the best way to keep it flat during the process and also gives you more opportunity to go wet on wet with your first wash and really get some beautiful blends

    Don't tell my wife (dead) but you're a beautiful angel goddess. I make my own paper out of sponge pulp and 91% isopropyl alcohol, it's cheap, absorbent, and easy to make. First, buy an a cheap sponges, then make them into pulp, then in a bucket (wood do not use metal or plastic then in a wood bucket add 5 gallons of 91% isopropyl alcohol. Add sponge pulp. Use previously mentioned flat strainer you made to sift though pulp, get flat even coating. Place wet coating on cloth, (if you bought colored Sponge bleach white now) wait 10 minutes to dry before using watercolo

    Hi Mako! Can you please make a video about the dry brushing technique with watercolours. For my GCSE art I dont want to waste my time focusing on amazing, 'out of the crowd' backgrounds because that is just not going to get me any marks unless I decide to annotate my background and say 'I used... to create...', 'I like the fact that...and this makes it look...' etc. So I figured why not try out the dry brushing technique because it's not very complex, doesn't waste my time, but at the same time looks great too. But the problem is that I've tried out the dry brushing technique before and it didn't turn out that great. So it would be helpful if you made a video talking about how to achieve good results using dry brushing. Love you Mako!💙💙

    • @Makoccino
      @Makoccino  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there are awesome tutorials on that on TH-cam already, maybe these would also help! I think the dry brush technique works great for painting water or grass or just adding some texture to certain objects! For backgrounds you could use a lot of other cool techniques like plastic wrap, salt, alcohol and things like that! Maybe you can incorporate different things!

    So is it better to use 100% cotton with gouache or the regular 140 lb watercolor paper (canson watercolor paper)?

    • @Makoccino
      @Makoccino  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think with gouache you don't have to be that picky and can use regular paper as well. But if you use lots of water with it, I would always go for thicker paper. If you notice that you're not happy with the results, you can also try it on a cotton paper and see if you notice a difference! I would always experiment to find out what works best for you :)

    Can I add water to the back and place something heavy on it after I paint on it? Or doesn't it have to be before?

    • @SpectrumArtStudio
      @SpectrumArtStudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Esmirna I do this sometimes inbetween layers and at the end of a painting if there is buckling. You need to add a FINE MIST ON THE BACK of your painting then place in a book and place weights on top. I would leave your work for between 1-2 hours then your work should be flat. I recently did an A3 piece where I had to this after the first layer then again at the end. I hope this helps - Good Luck !!
