all the more reason to tune in, for many listeners we could relate more to Ed than Scott. the main difference between Ed and us is that Ed has direct access to Scott's knowledge and mentoring, so I'm very sure he's moving faster than most of us. The second part has always been true, though. Nike never made “high quality” products. What HAS changed is their lack of elite marketing and a clueless suit ceo with no insider knowledge.

Nike is too reliant on the “retro” sneakers that sell for 2-3x on the secondhand market rather than selling them to the consumers themselves. Also, the average product at Nike in every line is just crappy quality at a premium price.

Nike was/is the brand of sports excellence but the landscape of regular people playing sports (not athletes) changed under its feet.

Regarding the UK not having enough money, the UK's Debt-to-GDP ratio at the end of World War 2 was 270%, and they managed created the NHS the rest of the Modern Welfare state with that debt burden. Was it easy? No; food rationing lasted well into the 1950s, and the tax burden became even higher than it is now. But they built homes and kickstarted the UK Economy, despite having to shed the the Imperial Markets system, and lose primary global reserve currency status. And we only finished paying off our war debt during the tenure of Gordon Brown as Chancellor in the early 2000s. But, and this is a big but, the ethos now is very much different. Thatcher is wasn't only an economic experiment, but a social one too, and although certain people wouldn't mind paying more tax, the distrust in politicians, and what governments do, is still a raw wound. And it's unsurprising since the track record of the self-anointed Natural Party of Government, proved to be tainted with incompetence, corruption, and grift. The last Labour government queered their own pitch, and so Starmer's Labour Party is treating their success like a Ming Vase. It's early days yet, so we'll have to see. But expectations are already low, so... We'll see.

A nike analyst on CNBC said the problem isn't that Nike is too "fat" but exactly the opposite. Nike has had a lot of layoffs and they let go of many people that were very important to the brand. The people that were let go knew the brand and culture and were committed to Nike.... so the company is now a shell of it's former self.

The University of Oregon comment hits home. Hundreds of our grads (I teach at the UO B-School) want to work there, and probably more than 100 end up there yearly through contract positions and other roles. It's not only about the stock value for employees; as one of the biggest employers in the Portland area, it trickles down to all sorts of things: cars, real estate, and high-end anything. Nike will bounce back, but it will be a challenging ride in Beaverton for a while.

Ed’s take on Nikes diminishing brand power is spot on. In the last call it 5-7 years, they have done nothing but rely on past successes. Todays Nike feels no different than Champs. First, Champs doesn’t sell their own shoes. They mostly sell Nikes, ironically. Second, Nike still makes a ton of cool stuff, they just aren’t marketed properly. If your predictions and speculations for the market are as good as your prediction of who’s winning the Euro I’ll start watching the first couple minutes of the podcast just for the dirty dumb jokes 😂

Maybe I misunderstood but it sounded like Scott said Android is owned by Microsoft. It's not. Google owns and continues to develop Android.

43:00 but it's not effective! We don't have e self driving taxis he promised in 2016. Starlink 40,000 low orbit satellite internet that cost $100 a month, how is that profitable?

Nike doesn’t make wide sizes, missed the boat that Hoka and New Balance are driving. I’d love to wear Nikes- they don’t fit and don’t perform. I don’t care if an NBA player wears them.
