  • A pop-pop boat is a toy with a very simple pulsating steam engine, which can be of two types: membrane engine or coil engine.
    0:03 tin can
1:27 plan for cutting and folding
4:40 tin solder (can be glued)
5:22 metal tap to be the base of fire source
7:05 tap soldered in the center of the boat
7:13 flexible copper tube for the motor (3/16" ~ 5mm)
8:25 holes for the engine output
9:00 I moved the lid and the coil forward to balance the weight
9:18 the spiral must be filled with water
    9:32 very simple alcohol lamp
10:09 the lamp should be exactly under the coil
10:30 it takes about 30 seconds for the boat to start moving
11:16 engine cover made of spray bottle
11:52 to choke the engine just block one of the exits

This kind of steam boat was very common during my childhood in India. The boat looked identical to real ones. The lamp was in the shape of spoon where you could pour molten wax or cooking oil and run it for 15-20 minutes. All made with tin, beaten to shape. It used to make croaking sound when operated. Keep it in round plastic tub and it will go round and round.
    Missing those childhood days.

61 years old now, as a kid of around 10 My Father built one for Me. I was always curious if one pipe was the outlet and the other the inlet, or if the water pulsed out of both. I....ahemmm...destroyed the little boat trying to move one of the pipes to the front of the boat. My thinking was if one was an inlet, I should be able to increase the speed of the boat, with a forward facing inlet. Since I destroyed the boat, I was never able to finish the experiment. Whenever I see one of these, I am reminded of those days.
I built one for My son, but did not use the coil version. I built his using the folded boiler method. Got a very satisfying POP POP sound while running. Over the years, research showed that both tubes pulse, so My theory at 10, was not accurate.

I made one back in the 1950's, only mine used a 35 MM film can as a tank instead of a coil. The coil will probably heat up faster, but the film tank held lots more water than this one for longer runs.
Good luck finding those cans anymore. I don't even know if the later plastic ones are still around. Yes, 35 MM film is still made.
I suppose a few copper plumbing parts could work. One end would need to be threaded so it can be filled.

Masih lebih cerdas pembuat asal indonesia. Yang menggunakan tenaga uap dari air yang direbus didalam perahu. Dan menimbulkan bunyi seperti motor pespa. Indo tetap terbaik!

I calculated the rough speed at 12:00 using the measuring stick in the shot and how long it took for it to travel 36in
Doing the math the boat took 11 seconds to travel 36 inches
    36in = 3ft
    3ft/11s = 0.2727ft/s
    0.2727ft/s = 0.16kts
So if you wanted to know how fast this boat goes, it's 0.16 knots (0.19mph/0.30kph)
