- Here is a new video !!
This is a rare vintage steam powered boat made around 1950 in Japan, quite popular in England and India.
The brand is C.K.
The engine was in very bad shape, eaten by the rust, I had no choice but to make a new one.
I spent an entire week trying to make that little engine, at least 1O attempts... with no guarantee that it would work well at the end :/
Please watch till the end to see this 1950's steam live power boat engine in action !
By supporting the channel you help me make more of these video and find more amazing items.
I hope you'll enjoy this restoration.
Thanks a lot for watching !

It looks fabulous and I love the sound it makes!
Ну как? Мне эту игрушку не игрушка, ну включи мне это, я буду и этим ещё.
What a lovely little toy! Excellent job bringing it back to life. The captain's turban and jaunty mustache were the perfect touches.
Thank you !! That little captain do the job !! 😅
😢😂😢❤❤😂😊😊😊😅❤😊
I love that you described the captain's mustache as "jaunty". It's a great word and great description
Without envy I must say this is maybe the most perfect restoration video ever. Such great work in the workshop as behind the camera as in post production.
Be proud of yourself 😊🎉
Thanks a lot mate ! Probably the most difficult project I’ve ever made. I would like to do better job painting tho…
No worries, your paintjob is just as fine @@TheFabrik . Key is the temperature around 20 degrees celcius. Spray two light coats and one final thick coat. And keep the recommended time in between coats as exact as possible. But I guess no news for you.
May I ask what cam and especially mic you use?
Nevermind, its all in video description
Nah info on mic is not up to date, so still would be interested to know what mic you use
@@NTRprojectsi used the integrated mic of the cam on that project 🙌 something went wrong with the paint. I don’t know what. It took ages to dry… Maybe too hot here, or too thick layers… I’ll do powder coating next time :) hey thanks for the tips I guess I just need to be more patient 😅
Sounds almost like a real engine when it's running. Kids today would never be trusted to handle something that involves actual fire! So cool to see stuff like this exists. Keep up the good work!
Heck, I wouldn't even trust their parent to handle this kind of toy!
The sound is real… I still remember the sound of the ship!
I'm so glad my dad introduced me to these in the 90s, many happy memories!
Which is stupid because children can be taught to cook before they reach double digits in age.
@@danielcolon979 Kids are a lot smarter and more capable than anyone gives em' credit for these days. Kids used to grow up fast because people used to treat them like young adults. People now only ever treat their children like braindead halfwits from birth, then they're surprised when that's all they ever grow up to be in this life!
As a kid, a million years ago, we could buy one of these for 15 cents at the variety store… days gone by.
A friend of mine just came back from India and brought me two Pop-Pop boats made frm Cola cans. Kids and I had great fun running them around the pool
No way a million years ago dam did u come over on the mayflower lmmfao
I remember that a billion years ago you could buy a planet with only 1 cent. Those were the good days man 😔
You can make your own using a coke can, straws, and milk carton or tin for the hull. There are numerous videos and webpages that show how, just google "Make your own pop pop boat." I helped my son make one for a science project, it was a lot of fun for us both.
I just bought one for 25PLN from flea market, looks half as old as here and im having a time of my life, I used to say good days are gone but its the simple things that make you smile
I am speechless. As many others say, it is probably your best restoration job ever. From a pile of rusty metal to a fully functional happily chugging vividly coloured little steam jet boat (love the noise. And the moustachoied marroon copper turbaned captain!)
Thank you so much 🙌 I thought it would be quick... I spent an entire month on that one 😅
Nothing impresses me more than the love of a craftsman and his skill . You Sir have outdone yourself . Thank you for such craftsmanship and the opportunity to watch you restore almost impossible relics . 👍
Thank you very much !! Glad you appreciated it 🙌
It's incredible that there were industrial models of this toy! As children, we made these steam boats from thick metal rods from ballpoint pens and tin from coffee cans. And it worked just the same!🙂
Such a beautiful and sympathetic restoration. It's lovely to see someone with real skill bringing a once loved, and sadly forgotten item back to new and vibrant life. This video made me very happy indeed, especially the care you took to replace the little guy's turban.
Thank you so much for sharing. 👍👍👍
Thank you very much 🙏 It was supposed to be a quick and easy project :) it took more than a month 🤷♂️😅
Im 68 now ,I had a steam powered boat like that when l was a little boy me and my dad used to play with it. Gee you brought back lovely memories.
Thank you so much for watching and also commenting 🙌 It’s very touching to bring the memories back 😌🙏
Its crazy that he was able to build a pop engine himself ❤ super underrated channel
Hay thank you !! I was surprised to see it working so well :)
😂so funny the Turkish man , love the video , you did a great work, but i didn't understood how is moving in the water 🫣
Thank you so much Tysy, I don’t know either 😂 it’s oscillation 🤷♂️
Water in the pan boils, becomes steam, is expelled and propels the boat forward. You now have a vacuum in the pipes and boiler, so water rushes in, is heated, and the cycle repeats. Now you might think that if water is coming in and out that cancels out and so no movement would be possible, but water coming in impacts the boiler front and transfers its momentum, so effectively the water coming in causes no change in the boat's velocity (water comes in, subtracting from the speed, hits the inside of the boiler, adding to the speed, then leaves, adding speed). The ones that have two pipes like this one do not have any water circulation, water comes in and out of both pipes at the same time.
@@Mariano.Bernacki🙌 thank you ! Now it’s clear 😌
The steam both pushes and pulls but the shape of the boat means that the push is more effective that the pull, so it goes both backwards and forwards to some degree but the effect of the shape means that it goes forward.
@@janskeet1382exactly 👍
You made some very good calls. The pickling, even going to so far as to make new parts of some of the pieces that were too damaged to fix.
I also pay attention to the little man in the boat
Happy wife, happy life. 😅
I was sitting here in Houston, Texas watching this video on You Tube, when I realized my sister and I had one of these boats in the fifties. I contacted her in Bristol England and she vaguely recollected it. Neither of us recalled who gave it to us, or who bought it as we were spending our summer holidays as usual at our grandparents in North Wales.
The boat we had was silver in colour and didn't work all that well in rough seas, so we only ran it in a large bathtub. The fuel we used was Methylated spirits, though I do have a recall using Mothballs/ Naptha, but that is rather vague.
Anyway thanks for showing it and bringing back memories of our childhood.
Regards,
Nick Jones
Thank you very much 🙏 Always touching to bring the memories back 😌🙌
Respect to those who invented the toy!
Respect to the craftsman who restored it.
I am glad that there have always been, there are now and there will be such people in the future.
Thank you ! Glad you appreciated it 🙌
I used to play with these boats when I was a kid in India in the late 80's and early 90's, seeing it being restored brought back some fond memories.
Thank so much 🙏 Always touching to bring the memories back 🙌
I'm flabbergasted ! A clever boat , fallen out of favor and time , rejuvenated to its former glory . A tour de force !
Thank you !! It was supposed to be a quick project… I spent more than a month 😅
Cutos for taking care of items important for our history! Remember these boats from when i was a kid, true value in a toy that was not just beutiful, but had fun features. We use to build these out of wood and run them, speed competition, with carosene. Great skills, good eye for details, "the mustasch.." and solid choice of item restaured. You Sir, are a true professional!
Thank you very much🙏 Always touching to bring the memories back 😌🙌
I love this! I have seen steam powered trains, but never a boat. My favourite part, as always, was creating replacement parts -- in this case, the engine.
Thanks a lot William 🙌 I didn’t even know these motors existed… It was supposed to be a quick project, I spent more than a month 🤷♂️😅
A Sunday afternoon ride around the lake.
Job well done. You are great craftsman
Thank you 🙏
A hatvanas években játszottunk vele.Köszönöm hogy felidézted ezt a szép emléket.
Thank you very much 🙌 Glad to bring the memories back 😌🙏
Your attention to detail, as always, is outstanding. Thanks for also showing all the steps on the engine and I am happy that unlike the live steam locomotive you restored, the heat did not affect the paintwork
Thank you very much ! The painting on the loco was heat resistant too. The decals were a bad idea 😕 I should have painted the letters. Mistakes are the best way to learn 😀
You made me return to my chilhood. I had one like this in Brazil, by the 70's. I was about 10 years old. It was called "Pop-Pop" boat, made by "Estrela Toys". Once, playing with that, I had a litlle cut, in my finger open the cap. Thank's for the memory.
Thank you so much for watching and also commenting 🙌 Always touching to bring the memories back 😌🙏
❤❤❤@@TheFabrik
Increíble restauracion ! Tuve una idéntica, solo le faltaba el hombrecito, hace 45 años, cuando era un niño. Genial el trabajo que hizo con esa lancha a vapor. Felicitaciones 👏 👏 👏
Glad to bring the memories back 🙌
The oscillation effect is really neat!
The engine generates steam in the boiler, which expands and travels down the exhaust pipe (with a pop) that shoves water out of the pipe (or pipes in this design). This pushes the boat forward in accordance with Newton's Third Law. As the boat moves forward under momentum, the pressure inside the boiler drops and sucks water back in (the boiler also contracts, producing another pop). This water is boiled, more steam is produced, and the cycle repeats. It also has to "burp" occasionally to release air accumulated in the boiler (water contains dissolved air).
Thanks a lot for these explanations 🙌
I love seeing old things brought back to life. Some kid would love it 👍
Probably someone else would have looked at it and just tossed it in the trash. Marvelous restoration.
Thank you so much 🙌
Impressive workmanship making the new motor and everything else.
Thank you !!!
Perrisimo. Tuve uno en mi infancia. También había un buzo con una manguerita y le bomveabas.
子供の頃持ってました! 1961年生まれです。
That was a lot of work to rebuild the heart of the little machine. Very fine metal bending and soldering. Impressive.
Nice touch with the electroplating, under paint & varnish. This little ship will have a long life now. Awesome project!
Protip; take a burnt wick (very short) from a common tea candle, to put in the parafin tub. It will concentrate the heat.
Also, you might experiment with slightly different length tubes. Maybe a small extension on one side, just 2-3mm or so 🙂
Thank you very much 🙏 I noticed the original tubes had different lengths so you’re right it must be useful🤨 thanks a lot for all these precious tips 🙏 I really wanted to try a candle but it was such a windy day, it was very difficult to light the fire 😣 Thanks again 🙌
懐かしい✨これと似た船を持ってた

Thank you very much ! Glad you enjoyed 😌🙏
Great restoration. I can remember my father buying me one, back in the late 50's but the thing I'll never forget is the smell given off, from the fuel cell you set alight, loved it.
Glad to bring the memories back 😌🙌
I m from India
This is my favourite toy in childhood
This is such a beautiful and satisfying video. Your attention to detail, your videography and restoration talent are amazing.
My dad had a whack of old gadgety toys he'd hung on to, but I've never seen one of these. Super cool!
Excelente, recuperação dessa jóia, na década de 1960, tive um bem parecido.....🇧🇷 parabéns.....
Muito obrigado 🙌
I had no idea how these things worked before I watched this .... and this video hasn't changed that one bit !!
Incredible craftsmanship, better than when it was new.
Steam toys loved them when toys were fun modern kids dont know nothing .👍
Inacreditável a perfeição desta restauração! Parabéns, você é ótimo no que faz! 🇧🇷
Thank you so much 😌🙏
This reminded me of one of my favorite anime films from Hayao Miyazaki called Ponyo. A magical tale about a little boy who meets a magical fish and falls in love with her. They have one of these boats--super-sized by magic-- and they use it to sail around trying to find Ponyo's mother. Voices by Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Betty White, and Tina Fey. Great film. Great restoration.
Looks like Ponyo’s boat definitely !!
@@TheFabrik There’s a metaphor in there somewhere amidst the vinegar baths and sandblasting. Ponyo’s love for his magical friend restored and transformed her. He risked the pop boat journey over the troubled waters to connect with his family and protect his new friend. You take the discarded and broken things in the world and restore them to life with your own special magic and you inspire others to do the same. It’s a noble pursuit.
Oh the Indian music make this video more beautiful......
From India 🇮🇳
Hey thank you !! I love Indian music, very relaxing ;)
New to the channel and I’m finding these steam engines fascinating! Such a simple concept but lots of fun
Would lovd to have a toy like this honestly. Love thosr older metal industrial type toys dealing with actual engines and stuff. Awesome work!
Thank you !! I didn’t know these pop pop motors ever existed 🙌
Wow thats so cool! Although a toy like that in this day and age would be considered hazardous/ dangerous. It's important that toys like this are preserved
In the 50s it was important to have children playing with fire as young as possible. They didn't have time to decide what sex they wanted to be because their hands were burning.
Haha ! I think I prefer these old times 😀😅
I had a boat like that when I was a kid and it ran on baking soda!
Oh really ? How’s that ? Can you tell me more ?
@@TheFabrik it was something like baking soda, at least some powder, that on contact with water bubbled up and produced a jet!
Какая интересная игрушка ... Реставрация очень понравилась !!! 👍👍👍
Thank you !! 🙌
Extremely satisfying paint remover wow
Hola.
Muchas gracias ! No sabía que mi trabajo fuera terapéutico 😌🙌
This is simple example of science. Great
Какие же интересные были раньше технические игрушки.👍 Развивали личность ребенка и давали ему начальные технические познания... А в наше время, технический регламент счел бы её опасной из-за огня, окрашивания и тому подобного.
What interesting technical toys used to be. 👍They developed the child's personality and gave him initial technical knowledge... And nowadays, technical regulations would consider it dangerous because of fire, staining and the like.
Sometimes what you do is beyond words, breathing new life into something that could easily have been thrown away, you certainly have a very special talent 👏👍🙂
Thank you 😌🙏
Most satisfying I enjoy my small collection of pop pop boats
Вау, вот это реставрация, класс. Но капитан, вообще крутой чувак. Спасибо, лайк однозначно.
Thank you !! That captain is just a poor fisherman !! 😅
AMAZING AND BRINGS back lots and lots of memories! I use to own one… I will now show this to my kids!
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS, nothing but smiles! Arigato from Japan…
Looking forward to the next one
Hi and thank you so much for watching and also commenting ! I hope your kids will enjoy 😃👍
I sit here mesmerized...Again, totally captivated.
Very nice job! Very Impressive! Thank you for showing some new techniques.
Truly excellent work. Making a new motor was impressive, but you did it without a press and dies, and without a commercial tube bender. The captain's turban was a nice touch.
I still hold some hope that you'll do a video or a series on your Terrot.
Thank you very much. The Terrot is in the workshop still. Unfortunately I need more space, my place is too small. I will restore it someday ! For sure 🙌
@@TheFabrik Same, there's never enough space for the really big projects. Some day!
@@carver7689believe me I want to ride it so bad !!
So satisfying to watch this childhood toy work again and really u done great work
I didn't realize that the boat didn't need propellers till the very end. Very cool craft. (Say "toy boat" fast 5 times)

When I was a boy many many moons ago ( dob 1941), I had one of these little boats. My boat worked with cotton wool in the tray soaked in meth`s. In those days there were very few ponds to sail it in so it was used in the bath tub. "Pure dead Brilliant"
that is a really clever way to bend the new engine tubes without crimping/kinking the pipe!

Indeed a Boat of Theseus..good job
Absolutely wonderful. Maybe it would go slightly better if the captain was wearing a ‘wind turban’ 😋
Beautiful work: you did a great job making another boiler for it, and I thought your paint job turned out great.
I have a larger pop pop boat than this that was made to resemble the Titanic. It was made in India, which is apparently where production shifted to when labor in Japan became too expensive.
You can also build one of these using a soda can and straws for the boiler and a milk carton or muffin tin for the hull. I helped my son make one for his science fair project; it worked just as well as the Titanic one. I have them both still.
Thank you !! I didn’t know those pop pop engines… First time. I’ll catch some other ones !! 😜
So, is this the carpathia?

Merci beaucoup 😀
Absolutely fantastic, well done sir, your skills and imagination are first rate.
Я думал что это зажигалка, а это оказался настоящий бот.. 😮😊
😃🙏 Could be a lighter too
Very good video, I like restoration. You can "Sand Blast" with soda bicarbonate. It's mostly dustless and won't pit the blastee. Also, in the 60s I made motor cycles and put sand in the handle bars to bend them without collapsing them. Sand or salt could be used in small things like the putt putt tubes. I have 3 styles of Putt Putts.
Thanks a lot for the precious tips ;)
