    The United States Coast Guard is home to a variety of special operations units that many people are not aware of. U.S. Coast Guard Special Operations, officially known as the Deployable Specialized Forces, are a group of highly trained operators and Coast Guardsmen who are the tip of the spear in the fight against maritime threats.
    The Coast Guard Deployable Specialized Forces consist of the Maritime Safety Response Teams (MSRT), Maritime Safety and Security Teams (MSST), Tactical Law Enforcement Teams (TACLET), Port Security Units (PSU), and National Strike Force (NSF).
    If you want to learn more about U.S. Coast Guard Special Operations, as well as what these various units do, watch this video!

      That's pretty badass, I wouldn't have been able to make the connection/comparison had you not said that, so thank you for that little (or well, to me anyways, it's actually a rather big) insight as to their similarities & close interaction/cooperation. My Dad's a Marine, now retired, but 20 years ago, he (so therefore our whole family) was stationed in Yorktown, Virginia. He was the c/o of 2nd FAST company, based at the NWS (Naval Weapons Station) on the York River. And actually, as a matter of fact, shortly after moving up (from Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC), we'd only been living there for about 2 months when 9/11 happened. And back then at the time, and especially prior to that, there really weren't all that many Counter-Terrorism assets/missions in the US military or Law Enforcement, and not to mention we weren't too far from Washington DC either, but I just remember it being a particularly crazy time/situation, how new & different so many things were, how much things & life in general dramatically changed (forever in many cases), and especially how busy my Dad was afterwards & from then on, until after he eventually got new orders and we moved again. Besides the whole beginning of the War on Terror thing tho, other than that, living up there was great, I miss it. Definitely one of the best, coolest, and most significant & important times in my Dad's career tho. And my life. Anyways, I appreciate your son's service, and you commenting sir. Semper Fi, carry on

    I retired from the USCG 25 years ago. When I joined we were the red-headed step child of the armed forces. My first cutter was out of PR and we had no training beyond some periodic weapons training that we got from the navy at Roosevelt Roads. On my cutter if you didn't stand watches you were automatically boarding crew. Our weapons were burned out M16s from the marines, old 1911s or vintage Winchester Model 12 shotguns. The weapons training quickly showed us that the M16s were completely unreliable, so I always grabbed an M12. We didn't even have shell holders, so you just stuffed your jacket pockets with reloads. We had a list called Omega and if the vessel was on that list you knew before boarding that it was a drug boat. If it wasn't on the list it still might be drug boat. We had an RHI that would zoom up and we'd board from there, just four guys. We had no strategy other than (depending on the layout of the boat) simply sweeping the crew fore or aft where one guy would watch them. The ensign or jg in charge would go to the bridge and take the conn, while two other guys went below and searched for drugs. Luckily, none of those boardings I was on ever resulted in a shoot-out because we were ill-prepared and poorly trained. I'm glad the CG is finally getting proper training.

      In 76 I was on the CGC Vigorous doing fish LE patrol on Georges Bank - Boarded a 600' Russian factory ship and found them taking lobster. Seized the ship and was part of the prize crew. Had to steam them into Boston for turn over to Dept of State. This was during the cold war. Six coasties taking over (seizing) a 600+' Russian trawler/factory ship with 200+ crew. I was stationed at PACTACLET for 6 years. 1999 - 2005. 4 trips to Iraq and was unfortunately there when Nate Bruckenthal, our brother, gave his life for his country. I went to a MSRT after TACLET but carried a injury that I would never recover from while fast roping. I thought I would have knee surgery and recover but I also had a spinal injury that got worse and I ended up with one surgery after another so I took a Instructor job at the Law Enforcement training team and barely made my 20 because of all the injuries. I would do it all again though. PACTACLET was the best 6 years of my life. Running all over the globe seizing over 50 tons of drugs and many successful trips to the Middle East. The Coast Guard has many jobs for the adrenaline junkies like myself, although the LE field is extremely hard to get into at the moment because the schools have over a 4 year wait list as my Nephew found out unfortunately. • @Bravo-Too-Much
    @Bravo-Too-Much 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

    What people fail to recognize is the Coast Guard is the PREMIERE rescue force in the United States and their search and rescue SOP/SOGs do not list a single “no go” situation. For example, normal Air Medical services in the US(CareFlite/Air Evac/PHI/etc) will not fly in even mildly inclement weather or if mild weather is forecasted. The Coast Guard does not have those kinds of no fly or no go situations, they will fly out, boat out, jump out, swim out, rope out and so on during Hurricane conditions. That’s some scary shit. That is pretty incredible if you aren’t familiar with search and rescue services. If they are called, they will go. They have many of the most incredible rescue stories you’ll ever hear. They have more rescues each year than every other branch combined, including PJs and SARCs during two decades of war time. They are responsible for all watercraft operating in American waters and have more seaborne raids on ships than all SEAL Teams combined. We never hear about them, but they average 2 or more armed ship/vessel boardings and takeovers every month.
    No one takes them seriously because they are always compared up against the other military branches when they really have very different mission sets. They are more similar to police and fire department technical rescue teams than military units in regards to what they actually do and respond too.
    If you actually want to do in real life what you are trained for, the Coast Guard is likely your best bet. If you want to go to war, join a different branch.

      i think what people fail to recognize is that the coast guard guards the coast/borders for the most part. they aren’t like the army who are trained to “take down the other side” they are trained to guard and protect and to rescue. its sad that they are made fun of for “not being real military” just because they dont do what the other branches do. if they did what the other branches would do, in translation they would basically be a second navy, then we wouldn’t need it. they are there for a reason and people fail to look at that which is so sad. when im old enough im going to enlist in the coast guard and im very excited for that time to come. i want to be an ME i hope the MSRT is my future

      I remember that period when there were a few officers and few more enlisted that were accepted into SEAL training. The next Commandant that came on killed the program. I heard it had to do with a lack of support staff. I think such a unit would have been valuable to the Coast Guard especially with the threats we face today. The Marines would probably allow some to attend Recon training.

      Imagine armed nuclear security officers that have CDLs and you have the NNSAs OST "Federal Agents". I did armed nuclear security for a year. It was a break from the patrol and politics of law enforcement. But it was full of wannbe special forces guys. Some of them were prior military and some were prior law enforcement and military like me. I will say this, because of the large budget, we got more trigger time then most military and police units. I think the biggest issue with the OST is that so much time is spend on the road and the job is not exciting unless you are in training mode. Real Nuclear recovery and counter proliferation is conducted by others..

    MSRT is very flashy but overall doesn’t do much. Their mission set is included in a long list of other units who have longer histories and proven track records. They’re just too far down the phone book to get that call. A lot of the activities you’ve listed are actually handled by TACLET and MSST teams. (I.e the famous sub video) was handled by TACLET and pursuit qualified boat crews from Big Coast Guard. MSRT is cool and you get a lot of training, but not a lot of operational credibility. TACLET is where it’s at.

    Good information. Almost every video about any special operation units always forget about the Navy’s AIRR community. We work with literally everyone in special operations and special warfare and are a small self-sustaining unit at times as well.

      Amen brother. I flew in a ton of helos, mostly 60s, on the LEDET teams. Either deploying us or doing Counter Narcotic surveillance missions off the decks of cruisers, destroyers, even the old frigates. I also got to do a P5 flight ops for 3 weeks in Central America. We could volunteer to go and fly with them as observers because we knew what to look for on vessels that smuggle. So we would identify targets for assets in the area. Even flew with the British. The Navy air crews were great guys.

    It's not surprising it's taken the Coast Guard this long to segregate it's forces into different components for specialized jobs. They started this back when technology required them to break off some of the RM/TC world to be "system managers" and "regional system mangers", assigned (out of rate) to be the "geek squad". Now, after screwing up a few ratings, they at least now have a IT rate. Same for the MSRT's. Back in the day, you just pulled from anyone who wanted to be in LE more than the bilge. I've seen MK's, BM's even TC's on teams in the jungles of Columbia searching for labs. But now, it's great to have ONE team who are focused on ONE job for the duration of their tour. Next tour, they could be back to flipping burgers, loading software or plotting a course. 73's

    They experimented with sending coasties to BUDS to form MSRT. They were supposed to spend time in thr teams then rotate back. I think only two of them made it and the Navy and CG couldn't agree about what to do with them after.

      Force Recon is not Special Operations. They do not fall under MARSOC.

    • @paddypace
      @paddypace ปีที่แล้ว

      @@travisprather678 what was FR before 1987? There was no SOCOM then. Were SEALS or SF not special ops since no special ops command existed? The Marines simply held on to their elite guys, perhaps because of a skewed impression of the Corps as a whole. Nonetheless, mission capabilities ought to determine classification. The command thing is primarily about employment. True, Recon is not in MARSOC or SOCOM as a whole, but they've been contributing recondos piecemeal since SOCOM's inception, and still do, despite the existence of Raiders. There are even Recon guys on individual training billets within MARSOC today. It's no wonder Recon guys have spots on SOCOM's Hall of Heroes and participated in historic special operations, such as MACV/SOG in Vietnam or work in conjunction with UDT during WWII and Korea. They are intrinsically special operations, but without SOF employment. As I have even heard it from within the Recon community, they are special operations in support of conventional warfare and special operations capable within the broader sphere of military operations.
