Southgate is insane. I don't mind him experimenting since we were alr guaranteed to qualify, but he could've given the younger lads some more game time e.g. eze, colwill, nketiah, foden etc. Instead he gave 50 year old Henderson 90 mins

By and large, that’s how international teams succeed, by prioritising a strong defence and relying on a few key individuals at the other end. They train with each other for a week every three months, there’s no time to implement Pep-style tactical systems.
Everyone agrees our defence is average, which is why it needs extra protection. All the best teams do it. France had by far the most talented squad in 2018 and played Blaise Matuidi on the left wing. Portugal had an ageing defence at Euro 2016 so they protected it and let Ronaldo/Sanches bail them out at the other end.

    • @ronaldomcdonaldo6289

England is playing negative possession ball, it isn't a defensively strong system with weak centre halves. It might be tactically the worst way to play with this team but I guess they don't have time to implement a pep style system so I will have to accept it.

I know people like point at DM as a problem area but for me the problem has always been the lack of a clutch striker.
In 06....We had it with Wazza who was world class but not clutch. Its the same story with this crop. Kane is world class but is not clutch.
Sterling and Rashford are arguably our most clutch forwards and its not given that they starts over the likes of Saka, Grealish and Foden... Till we develop a clutch striker we will always be the bridesmaid and never the bride.

Examples of clutch players Schmeichel, Messi, Drogba and Sergio Ramos. Different positions but all showed up for their clubs and country.
Rooney only scored 1 goal in 11 World Cup matches but it was a open play goal against Uruguay in fairness.
Kane has scored 8 in 11 World Cup games but half of those goals was 2 braces against Tunisia and Panama and of those 8 goals, 5 were penalties.

At international football barring Euros 04 were he was fantastic due to partnering with other forwards like a world class Michael Owen...

The issue is, and remains defensively. Id be fully behind the Southgate out brigade if we had a top defense, but we dont, so some of our negative play is to compensate for that. We are very top heavy. Rashford - Grealish, Maddison - Bellingham, Foden - Saka. Can only start one of each really. Trippier, Shaw (when fit) Stones, Rice, Bellingham, Rashford, Saka, Kane is the making of a top side, the other 3 need some work tho. We desperately need Colwill to push on so we can see the back of Maguire, only way we are gonna get Maddison into MF alongside Bellingham, until then we are stuck with Henderson or Mount

@@bna919 Yeah, long term i think the midfield is Rice, Bellingham and Foden, but right now we need more defensive solidity. Walker and either Shaw or Chilwell push too far forward. Trippier and TTA also. Reece James would likely fix that issue at RB, but we will need a more defensively solid LB too. Long term i think Colwill will sit next to Stones in the left CB role, but for some reason Southgate, and theres no reason another manager wouldnt see the same, see Maguire as a better option than Guedhi, Tomori or Dunk. You would have to assume that if could play without that 2nd defensive Midfielder, we would. Having Shaw, Walker, Foden Bellingham, Rashford or Grealish, Saka and Kane all attacking leaves us too venerable in defense. James and Shaw could do the Cole, Ivanovic roles at Chelsea where one comes inside as the other pushes forward to make it three at the back, but James cant stay fit and isnt ahead of others in that role at the moment

      @bna919 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@g.g.baxter4868 You can still do the Cole Ivanovic role with Shaw and Walker as they are both comfortable playing in a back 3. All Southgate needs to do is tell the players what he wants them to do. I don't think Henderson offers that much more defensive solidarity than Foden. Foden is a much better presser and Henderson is on the cusp of an athletic decline. Additionally Foden won't do that much defensive work against most teams because England will dominate possession.

Club management is completely irrelevant to international management which makes the “relegated Middlesbrough” so lazy. Germany and Spain took treble winners to the World Cup and flopped, meanwhile Argentina won it with a coach who’s never had a club job in his life.
I’d like to see Maguire phased out by the Euros but with Stones and Shaw injured I can see why he didn’t want to change three of the back four.

CITY's treble winners had in their team & English: Walker, Stones, Grealish.
With their stars being Haaland, KDB, Gundagon, Silva.
The PL is the most entertaining league in the World, no doubt, foreign players have played a huge role in raising it up to its high levels, which naturally so, brought up the level of English players also.
When the PL started bringing in high level footballers, the foreign players like Bergkamp, Henry, CR7, Zola, were the stars of their teams,
how things have changed, is recently some of these teams' stars are English, Saka/Arsenal, Kane/Tott, butt no Top PL team is majority English. But the English team they have now, have even WC talent to win a tournament, and would have in Euro20 with a great manager.
Last point, the thumbnail to this is really misleading, (I was going to listen to your debate anyway), with 'Sacked' written under the photo of 'Mr. Flukey draw but still cannot win it', gave me hope some one had actually opened the Gate and told him to go South and keep going South untill you're far-far away from this team/squad!

He may have gotten us to semi-finals and finals which is brilliant but it boils down to nothing when we don't turn it into silverware. I'll be the first to say that bias toward English players does exist and it's ridiculous. However, there is no denying that this group of players is arguably the best we've ever had and maybe even the best collective group of players out of all the national teams right now. Southgate has given me the best times in my life as an England fan but we want more than just semi-finals, we want the end product. He is tactically inept and his managerial record proves that. I thank him for his time as England boss but we need a proven winner to elevate this squad just that bit further and bring home a trophy.

What does my head in with Southgate is that he could easily maintain his core squad and principles, but still play with 5 top tier attackers in a slightly modified/modernised system. He leaves too much threat on the bench for the sake of pragmatism.
We should just flat out copy the Pep blueprint from last season and go with a 442 or 4231 out of possesion, but a 3223 box midfeild in build up. For the pragmatism we can have a block of 5 players with solid defensive profiles that have thrived at possession based clubs and use them as potection and support for 5 class attackers to play with freedom and width.
    Grealish - Kane - Saka
    Bellingham - Foden
    Rice - Stones
    Colwill - Dunk - Walker
Stop shoehorning in Maguire, Philips, Henderson, Trippier out of position and Maddison out of position. Use a core of City playera and fill the rest of the squad with players that fit the system rather than his favourites.

Southgate doesn't experiment with his team. That's probably the most infuriating thing, along with picking players that shouldn't be starting. Players like Maguire, Henderson and Phillips shouldn't be near the squad (Phillips can, if he starts playing more frequent). With experimenting, we have so much quality, but he rarely gives players a chance and sticks with the same 11 all the time. Trial TAA in midfield more or even on the wing. Try Foden in CAM role. Start Wilson or Nkeitiah upfront. Give Ramsdale a chance in goal. Just anything to try and find our best starting 11.

Now no, 9 months until a major tournament, plus who is there out there to replace him? Club and international football are two different things, only certain coaches can work with international teams so it takes time to find a replacement.
Personally I see him going after the euros no matter what, and personally I think after the world Cup in Qatar he probably should have walked, then we would have had plenty of time before the next major tournament. No matter what he does in the euros, people will always be jumping on his back. Also to judge him after one game against Ukraine is ridiculous, he was quite clearly mixing a few things up, it was essentially a friendly so was a good opportunity. To sack him now would be ridiculous in my opinion, and all these people calling for that were just bored with no prem football, no matter what you think of him sacking him now would be a bad thing.
