I do see how so many people still don’t accept others in America still and it’s sad. It’s happens cause of people’s races, it happens because of people showing their political opinions, and just people in general in America don’t trust each other. I can definitely say that just 4 years ago we barley had any Asian American hate crimes or any of this feeling of this person’s white so they are racist or, this persons black so they are dangerous. But now so many of them are rising right now. It’s sad to seeing it all happen so fast at the same time.

A Chinese European here. Here in the Netherlands asians are in the minority. Most of racism against Chinese people are micro-aggressions/racial "jokes" that are perceived as "innocent"! Most people don't realize its hurtful and since we are in the minority we feel quite powerless. Since the pandemic hit there has been more focus on Asians and we see a rise in racism as well (although not as bad as in the USA, since its mostly verbal). Because of this we have started to become more outspoken on this issue, but its still a hard since we are not used to speak out on this topic. I am currently also learning how to deal with it... I am very worried about the current micro-agressions towards asians to result in violence like in the states since I feel like every trend from US will eventually be picked up here in the NL. From what I hear from friends, I also feel like the hate crime towards asians is worse in UK and in France compared to the NL. But thats my perception.

“I grew up being taught to be quiet and ignore racism/discrimination”. I personally reckon this is the root problem. When people are complaining about existing education system for its lack of attention or emphasis on Asian Americans (or Chinese Americans etc.), we should also look into ourselves. It takes two hands to clap.
I can somehow understand why immigrants of older generation taught their kids that way, but reality proves that their kids could be taught better than that (quiet, submissive you know what I mean). Let’s start with our generation!! Teach our kids to stand up for yourself when being treated rudely, racially taunted & discriminated, or even assaulted. Simple fact is bullies or attackers do not pick on those who can defend themselves. Simply too much work.

    • @aznmochibunny
      @aznmochibunny 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I believe a lot of the hush hush about not speaking about discrimination in the past was due to the fact that in the early 1800's, there was anti-Chinese immigration laws and many immigrated illegally to fulfill the American dream. I recently learned a lot of Chinese men in those days were able to immigrant through what was called the "paper sons" technique where they faked their identity to that of a son of an successful Chinese (because in those days, only "smart" immigrants were allowed in the country). If they were vocal about it then, than their immigration status (or lack thereof) would have been discovered. People were frightened in those days, and that sentiment was just passed down throughout the generations.

Don't be wishful thinking. Europeans always use some ugly information to publicize the negative impression of China. We can do the same, but it's not necessary. See...the thing I noticed and I think what most people have forgotten is that if anything big that happens to the states, discrimination arises like crazy against certain groups, grouping them altogether like potential criminals. I'm pretty sure most of us remembered 9/11... When the US got attacked by terrorists (basically the destruction of the twin towers)...remember...the Al Qaeda... Afghanistan ...Israel... Palestine....Osama Bin Laden ...etc...yeah... When that happened...the middle Eastern people were all grouped and considered "terrorists" even when they're innocent. They were discriminated horribly and were aways suspected when on planes traveling...they were all separate, distinguished ethnicity with their own lives and yet they were all grouped under the same category.. terrorists...luckily this discrimination has died down since but it shows that this "pointing fingers" at innocent group of people and discriminating them will never end...it will only subside until another big thing happens and people will find a new target group to discriminate against... it's sad and it's a very hard thing to control and change...how many years has it been and yet we still can't accept each other and continue to group certain people as "bad?"

7:00; I met someone online (who is white) who wrote about their stepmom who is Chinese experienced discrimination thanks to COVID. The stepmom told the author of that story that racism against Chinese people is VERY much real, because lately she has been given dirty looks by people in grocery stores just for being Asian and for getting groceries.
I had a friend who is Filipina and she told me that her Filipino mom has been looked at strangely and even cautiously by random strangers whenever she goes into grocery stores.
I even experienced racism during COVID. My family and I were berated by a family whom we've never met before. They called us "corona".

Humans are inherently racist...but due to trade, education and other means of exposure with other cultures, it has been suppressed quite a bit. Like one of the interviewees said, it's an emotional thing, not a rational thing.
Imagine an epidemic originating from Africa, would the chinese treat them rationally? I doubt so, not talking about exceptions, coz they're universal. This is by no means a justification of what's happening though. I am asian myself from far east India where looks are mostly oriental. I too am subject to casual racism, from the same people who cry racism in other countries.

When he went to playground before COVID, he can barely walk or talk, but he loves playing with kids from all races.

The Asian-American hate seen in America today is a classic example of bullying. Take a middle school; if a popular student decides to target someone as their recipient for hate due to the popular student's own feelings of anger, anxiety, fear or ignorance, then it gives license to others who are also experiencing anger, anxiety, fear or ignorance to do the same. Life is hard and there are stresses at every level. It is often not socially acceptable to take it out on others, but if a popular person gives permission for everyone else to do it AND.....the recipient of this hate was taught to be meek, then you have the perfect storm.
White Americans are struggling to keep up in society. But they are the popular race who holds significant power. So when tRrump, their leader, marked Asian-Americans as the target AND...Asian's traditional teaching is to be meek, then we have the perfect storm. The same can happen to any race, it just depends who gets targeted and if they are good victims.

5:37 I'm a white Christian (denomination: United Church of Christ) and American, so what that man said about how this anti-Asian hate is part of tradition with us religiously too hit me as really sad and something Christians, especially white ones, should notice. Google my denomination and you'll start to get an idea of how different it is to the way a lot of white politicians have weaponized their brand of Christianity.
Christianity and hate should not be synonyms for each other and it's obvious that the actions of tradition....
....whether it was against same-sex marriage.....
....people getting help out of poverty or to deal with it....
.....the way single moms were treated and the way women and anyone else who ant abortion were vilified while their situations were only made harder by so many Christians.....
....and then there was the way indigenous people were hidden away in the worst kinds of Catholic boarding schools and many Catholics there justified it all in the name of that brand of Christianity.
Some of this stuff still happens. Also, the worst and most hypocritical part is that many white (and nonwhite) Christians don't want traditional views of the Bible used against them, they want sympathy, even full acceptance, but they turn on so many other groups with traditional interpretations/white American or colonizer interpretations so viciously.
Basically, what that man said about his idea of Christianity practiced by white Americans should scare every white American Christian into actually helping and having sympathy and empathy for others regardless of tradition and the other person's life and belief. I really am no better than anyone else. Maybe, more white American Christians should tell themselves that. I'm afraid of what I will do or how I will believe in Christianity if I don't.
