Not only is this obviously a beautiful passion project by Eugene that is an important message American needs, as an Australian, this is prevalent here as well. As someone who is a covid tester and works in pathology, the post covid Asian racism here is disgusting. I’ve had to intervene in so many race related slurs and confrontations. Anything we can do to stop this hatred needs to be promoted.

I just read an article on the Model Minority Myth in the NY Times titled "The Cost of Being and Interchangeable Asian" written by Brian X. Chen and he discusses the lack of Asians in senior management positions in corporations. I can give you a list that's as long as my arm of Indian CEOs in American corporations. One prominent Indian CEO is Sundar Pichai who is CEO of Alphabet/Google, another is Satya Nadella who is the CEO of Microsoft. There are many, many more Indian CEOs that can be added to the list.
@@jamesbond4810 I disagree with your statement. When I was growing up as an Italian American, we didn't refer to others as "white". There were Italians, Irish, Polish, Germans, Greeks etc. We didn't see ourselves as a singular white homogeneous group just like Asians don't see themselves as a homogeneous group. If you see Italian Americans, Irish Americans, Greek Americans as the same, well, I guess that says something about you.

100% agree with this. The lack of recognizing racism against Asians has even diminished my own grasp at how big it is. Our culture and society at large has gas-lit Asians to believe that we are crazy for thinking there is a true problem- or at the very least, a problem worth bringing mass attention to.

Awareness of what? Biden recently retracted the case against Yale so they could openly discriminate against asians again. SF did the same by removing merit standards from their top high school because there were "too many" asians". The group most responsible for attacks on all other groups, lets just say Eugene's media deliberately avoid reporting descriptions of the attackers, and then let the stories fade away as fast as they can manage.

I'm not Asian-american. ..just an Asian speaking here....but the fact that Humans can be so harsh considering something like colour disgusts me and that's why I'm happy that the guys are speaking out on this....not only Americans...but the rest of the world needs to know about these incidents and the history....it's very important.
It hurts. I am Asian and I feel like I have to be careful where my grandma’s and grandpa goes because I feel they might get hurt. I should not feel that way.
Don't know if this helps but I can say at least for myself, I find myself being more aware of my surroundings if I see an older Asian person when I'm out walking. Not out of any ill feelings for them, but I'm trying to watch for in case someone else tries something so I'm prepared to step in and try to stop any violence that might occur. There are at least some people out there who are looking out for them.
Also, keep in mind some Asians might be here because they had to escape their country trying to kill or imprison them (like North Korea). You'd do the same thing yourself, and go wherever was better.

I think what makes me the most upset is seeing minority groups attacking each other. I heard from my own grandmother that "they were silent about us blacks, and now they want us to come to the rescue" or "all they do is put their head down and keep walking, they don't defend themselves, this is their fault" which is just disgusting. Hate breeds hate, and you can't talk about wanting equality, and then turn around and talk about "karma" towards a whole race.

It's pretty incredible the amount of history that we never learned as Asian-Americans but I'm grateful that it's being made in such a clear and thoughtful way.

Ancient Greece, Egyptian, and Rome history are all in the vast majority of state's curriculums, and AP euro is almost always an option in high school. I actually learned some Japanese to be able to talk more to the convince store owner in my area. And the smile on that mans face was something ive never forgotten. The fact I was a black kid trying to speak broken Japanese meant the world to that guy.

I sobbed so much watching this video. As a young south Asian girl, seeing an actually well-researched video about a rarely-talked about topic hit me where it hurts. It made me feel so grateful and seen since no one ever talks about this and also so sad and sorry that these wedges were driven between ethnic minorities. Thank you for making me think.

It’s horrendous how much history is wiped out from common knowledge, it’s our job to research and learn about these things our schools failed to teach us.
history has always been written in a favorable light since it usually is written by those that want to come off as in the right. every war is written about favorably from the winners perspective. you should look at the shitshow that was the war of 1812, both sides write about winning in their own history books. but neither write about the true tragedy of how many native lives were lost on both sides fighting someone elses war, and then loosing more of their land after there numbers were dwindled from said war. thats why its so important to read history from every angle possible.

Racism is taught behavior. What is sad is that despite so many years of education on racism, racism still exist. It is because the human mindset needs to feel superior to another race. I'm a Asian Russian and people here often forget about our existance despite Russia has a huge part of territory in Asia. Russian slavs never include us as a country representative members and portray us stereotipically on media too. No one spoke about it because we are ethnic minority groups. My father's friend was stabbed to death in 90s in Moscow because he was an Asian man.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding your statement... but WW2 propaganda wasn’t demonizing Asians because of their looks. What was being demonized was Nazis and Communism. The artwork depictions are called “exaggerated caricatures.”

I am Asian American (Afghan and Uzbek) and although I'm not part of the demographic of Asian Americans that are getting attacked, this breaks my heart. This is nothing new. It's too much. I've had enough. I'm tired of seeing Asian Americans hurting and suffering.
I think it’s honesty so ironic how they want to throw us slurs and deny our existence, but they love our food and our culture’s creativity. From Chinese’s martial art to Japanese’s Anime and from Vietnamese’s food to Korean’s fashion. It’s seriously disheartening.

So many people live oblivious to these issues due to ignorance or pain because looking at it is too hard, especially when it’s in our own lives. But Eugene is right, we do need to talk about this. My favorite thing about this video is that Eugene is using his platform to amplify the voices of others. I didn't realize the reality of the anti Asian hate until my family adopted my younger brother from the Philippines. It's easy to not see what's going on until it directly affects you or your loved ones.

@@hydrolito I live in France and I've never learned these... Pretty sad, I learned through documentaries. (Except for the great inventions but it was never something we had to learn by heart, it was more like "details")
SAME! We get NO Asian history whatsoever in schools in the UK. We get a lot of World War 1&2 history in highschool (don't get me wrong, that is VERY important... but we do not learn about the Korean war, the Vietnam war, the Cold War, we don't learn about modern politics, racism, any American history, and we learn nothing about race and discrimination. So unless you go out there and seek this information for yourself you would never know about it. Half of what I know about world history, race and discrimination has come from me watching movies or series, or hearing celebrities mention things (like Ice Cube talking about the LA Riots or George Takei talking about Japanese internment) so then I take the time to research these things. Not everyone does this. I wish we were taught about these things in school, I think it would promote empathy, discussion and understanding and help to minimise bullying and misunderstandings.

I thought the same thing, and actually avoided watching this thinking it would be poorly made due to his quickly it was put together - until hearing Eugene mention on the most recent Trypod ep that he actually didn't include a chapter about the shooting because it they were basically done working on the movie by then. I'm happy that this was put together in a proper manner, without being rushed - there's no way it would have been as good at it is if it were made in a few days. This is too important to be made hastily.

I'm an American expat living in Germany. My boyfriend is German-Vietnamese. He has had people call him Asian/Korean slurs as a result of the German national soccer team losing to the Korean team. This kind of B.S. scapegoating happens everywhere.

I've been living in Korea for more than twenty years, working as a professor. This semester, for my British and American Culture class, this topic has become much requested by students. Having lived here for so long, I'm sometimes out of touch with events and developments back in North America, and stumbled upon this video while doing research. Making this video required watching for my class. Really excellent work- and it doesn't pull any punches.

Who is the oppressor though? Is it everyday white people who have done nothing wrong? Is it everyday black people who have done nothing wrong? Is it rich white people who could do more but don't? Is it rich black people who could do more but won't? Everyone will have a different oppressor and for someone, that oppressor is you. They will fight you while you beg them to fight the oppressor, not knowing or caring that they see you as the thing that has ruined their life. Rhetoric is cheap and dangerous. Actions are worse.

Some of these people literally go out to eat Chinese/Vietnamese/Japanese/Korean/and others’ food, wear clothes with Asian characters written on them, play video games as Asian characters, and watch Asian entertainment (K-dramas/Anime/etc.) yet still hate on Asians 😕
Some due and some are interested in those things to show that they love and support what is cool in the Asian culture. Some are just trying to find a way to show solidarity. And some do show interest in these things and then show hypocrisy. You are not wrong, but it's not everyone.
Cars, electronics etc too. You can't go about your day without having used a product made by Asians. If you own an Apple product, the first thing and probably the last thing you touched in your day was made by Chinese

As someone who is a covid tester and works in pathology, the post covid Asian racism here is disgusting. I’ve had to intervene in so many race related slurs and confrontations. One prominent Indian CEO is Sundar Pichai who is CEO of Alphabet/Google, another is Satya Nadella who is the CEO of Microsoft. There are many, many more Indian CEOs that can be added to the list.

There were Italians, Irish, Polish, Germans, Greeks etc. We didn't see ourselves as a singular white homogeneous group just like Asians don't see themselves as a homogeneous group. If you see Italian Americans, Irish Americans, Greek Americans as the same, well, I guess that says something about you.

I'm not Asian-american. ..just an Asian speaking here....but the fact that Humans can be so harsh considering something like colour disgusts me and that's why I'm happy that the guys are speaking out on this....not only Americans...but the rest of the world needs to know about these incidents and the history....it's very important.

It hurts. I am Asian and I feel like I have to be careful where my grandma’s and grandpa goes because I feel they might get hurt. I should not feel that way.
Don't know if this helps but I can say at least for myself, I find myself being more aware of my surroundings if I see an older Asian person when I'm out walking. Not out of any ill feelings for them, but I'm trying to watch for in case someone else tries something so I'm prepared to step in and try to stop any violence that might occur. There are at least some people out there who are looking out for them.

Gosh, I’m Asian American and took AP US History and I didn’t know most of the things Eugene taught me.

I think what makes me the most upset is seeing minority groups attacking each other. I heard from my own grandmother that "they were silent about us blacks, and now they want us to come to the rescue" or "all they do is put their head down and keep walking, they don't defend themselves, this is their fault" which is just disgusting. Hate breeds hate, and you can't talk about wanting equality, and then turn around and talk about "karma" towards a whole race.

Ancient Greece, Egyptian, and Rome history are all in the vast majority of state's curriculums, and AP euro is almost always an option in high school. I actually learned some Japanese to be able to talk more to the convince store owner in my area. And the smile on that mans face was something ive never forgotten. The fact I was a black kid trying to speak broken Japanese meant the world to that guy.

I sobbed so much watching this video. As a young south Asian girl, seeing an actually well-researched video about a rarely-talked about topic hit me where it hurts. It’s horrendous how much history is wiped out from common knowledge, it’s our job to research and learn about these things our schools failed to teach us.
history has always been written in a favorable light since it usually is written by those that want to come off as in the right. every war is written about favorably from the winners perspective. you should look at the shitshow that was the war of 1812, both sides write about winning in their own history books. but neither write about the true tragedy of how many native lives were lost on both sides fighting someone elses war, and then loosing more of their land after there numbers were dwindled from said war. thats why its so important to read history from every angle possible.

SAME! We get NO Asian history whatsoever in schools in the UK. We get a lot of World War 1&2 history in highschool (don't get me wrong, that is VERY important... but we do not learn about the Korean war, the Vietnam war, the Cold War, we don't learn about modern politics, racism, any American history, and we learn nothing about race and discrimination. So unless you go out there and seek this information for yourself you would never know about it. Half of what I know about world history, race and discrimination has come from me watching movies or series, or hearing celebrities mention things (like Ice Cube talking about the LA Riots or George Takei talking about Japanese internment) so then I take the time to research these things. Not everyone does this. I wish we were taught about these things in school, I think it would promote empathy, discussion and understanding and help to minimise bullying and misunderstandings.

Guys I really think you should change the Title and Thumbnail to this video to something more akin to a documentary. It was SO beautifully and sensitively researched, compiled and edited, it really deserves a title and thumbnail that reflects this.

I'm an American expat living in Germany. My boyfriend is German-Vietnamese. He has had people call him Asian/Korean slurs as a result of the German national soccer team losing to the Korean team. This kind of B.S. scapegoating happens everywhere.
WOW, over a frikin soccer game? Whatever happened to sportmanship? Other than exciting game-play, that's usually my favourite part, where you get to see who's a classy professional by showing grace in their loss
That is unfortunate. Sorry he had to go through that. What is worse is he isn't even Korean. We would like to hope if it was the other way around we wouldn't slur white Germans if it was the Koreans who lost at a sport they were passionate about.

After the shooting this weekend my foreign language teacher did a unit about anti Asian hate and the first Chinese migrants and the challenges they faced

Even Ivy League colleges in the name of “equity” are denying supremely qualified Asian students in order to open up space for BIPOC. We all know who truly hates Asians in the US and why.

I've been living in Korea for more than twenty years, working as a professor. This semester, for my British and American Culture class, this topic has become much requested by students. Having lived here for so long, I'm sometimes out of touch with events and developments back in North America, and stumbled upon this video while doing research. Making this video required watching for my class. Really excellent work- and it doesn't pull any punches.

Everyone will have a different oppressor and for someone, that oppressor is you. They will fight you while you beg them to fight the oppressor, not knowing or caring that they see you as the thing that has ruined their life.

Some of these people literally go out to eat Chinese/Vietnamese/Japanese/Korean/and others’ food, wear clothes with Asian characters written on them, play video games as Asian characters, and watch Asian entertainment (K-dramas/Anime/etc.) yet still hate on Asians 😕
Some due and some are interested in those things to show that they love and support what is cool in the Asian culture. Some are just trying to find a way to show solidarity. And some do show interest in these things and then show hypocrisy. You are not wrong, but it's not everyone.

Cars, electronics etc too. You can't go about your day without having used a product made by Asians. If you own an Apple product, the first thing and probably the last thing you touched in your day was made by Chinese

We never talk about the Vincent Chin case enough. That case was a landmark in American history and it truly exposes how America still hasn't changed.
Sympathy and love dear Vincent mom and family....so sorry for your horrendous loss and pain. We honor Vincent's memory and precious short existence. May justice prevail after all these difficult years you had to experience.....we extend our compassion and caring to you. We trust it is never too late to correct the outrageous wrongful injustice carried out by judge Kaufman in 1982 and this horrible conduct against Vincent. Time for the court to carry out the right judgment.
