    Best version of this I've heard, tops YESSONGS, and shows how poor Tony Kaye was on the original studio version; Wakeman takes it to a completely new level.

      I don't agree with your taste... And just in terms of this song, I think a far better performance from all involved is SONGS FROM TSONGAS version from 2004... but we all differ :)

      My favorite Wurm version is on the Symphonic Live video album, which curiously had Tom Brislin at the keyboards (and he did a stellar job IMO)... What makes it my favorite is Howe's guitar playing at his inspired peak (he wasn't as fast as in his past but he more than made up, as always, with a fabulous solo!)
      But all of them versions of Wurm are always fantastic!

    • @plbwiki768
      @plbwiki768 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Pedro The rawness of that recording makes it the best IMHO.

    Saw it live. Thought it was their best version ever, though the 1984 live was amazing...but holy shizzit. I'd take either today as we devolve into everything less.

    This version is up there with anything on TH-cam from 77/79 tours imo. Great playing with perfect sound quality. The Howe / Wakeman duel is a treat for all Yes fans.

    i remember just a few years ago i got out of bed and i turned on the TV and i still had the batter from my pot brownies left, so i was eating pot brownie batter in 6 in the morning with this in my earphones and i realized that everyone is our own form of "god" and we choose the path we make in life and that we should live our life not in ignorance but to embrace everything in the world, and i got to see this band in Sydney for my birthday this year so fuseldar is pretty true on that fact.

    1996??? Holy shit, that was amazing. They hadn't lost a bit from twenty five years younger, if anything, this is at least as good as the Yessongs version, perhaps even better, during solo time. YES-I have loved them since Fragile came out. Got into ELP and King Crimson the same year......what a time.

      Since this preceded "Freebird" by a couple of years, what you perhaps should've said was "Freebird" is America's "Starship Trouper".

    Astonishing! I can't believe what I am hearing Steve Howe doing when it reached 5:32!!!

    • @jskypercussion
      @jskypercussion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Steve Howe is one of the fastest guitarists. It's amazing how he does not get recognized as one though. It's because he is not in the shred metal category. The shred metal guitarists play fast in almost every single one of their songs. Steve Howe plays fast like that occasionally. But when he does, he plays things faster than the guitarists that just specialize in speed. The things he does are done tastefully too. This solo along with Awaken, Parallels, the solo work in Gates Of Delirium, On the Silent Wings Of Freedom and Asia Wildest Dreams are super fast and really hard to try to learn let alone play perfectly note for note at Mr. Howe's speeds and timing. Steve Howe truly is the best overall guitarrist.

    • @acr08807

      It sounds great, but on those runs he was just sliding his finger an octave up the fretboard.

    • @ToxicallyMasculinelol
      @ToxicallyMasculinelol 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it's because the stuff he plays is not very technically challenging. trevor rabin played more difficult solos for example. but yeah it still sounds great

    • @IwshIcldstrtover
      @IwshIcldstrtover 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ToxicallyMasculinelol You'd better look up Steve Howe. You don't have a clue as to what you're talking about. He is one of the most technical guitarists in history! Rabin is nothing but about speed. Howe's patterns are extremely technical and very difficult than the average player. READ IT!

    • @IwshIcldstrtover
      @IwshIcldstrtover 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@acr08807 NOT TRUE!!! He was doing this in 1980's, and you can see him in action doing a smaller solo featurung what he's doing, and he is not "Sliding his finge an octave up the fretboard ". My favorite solo is by Rick Wakeman and was done with ABWH in the 1989 Live album An Evening of Yes Music Plus! Rick is my favorite YES keyboard player, followed by Patrick Moraz and finally Mr. Tony Kaye who did some great things on the first three albums and later with Trevor Rabin.

      @@odinsson204 You must mean Yes Symphonic Live DVD accompanied by an orchestra (that was just after Magnification) and with Tom Brislin on keyboards (which many people don't like much but I do) and which has IMO the best Chris Squire bass SHOW and the best Howe's solo on wurm... BTW, Ritual is pretty awesome with an orchestra!

    Listening to different live versions. Of the mainstream ones I would vote for Yessongs so far. Sound quality aside. Vintage keyboards over modern. The spirit of youth. Alan's tank is not full here, no poly rhythms here. Wakeman what more can be said. Jon's the voice of Yes. Chris seems low in the mix. Steve has not really slowed down yet, but earlier sounds edgy er. My lord as touring musicians how many shows they played these songs, what a life's calling.
